I haven't been in the area for a while but your best bet for traffic flow is Ameristar followed by Lumiere. Most of the higher stakes players have transitioned to plo but higher games still run at Ameristar and Lumiere.

Bravo says Ameristar has 5/10 every Tuesday Thursday staying at 1 & Lumiere has it every Wednesday starting at 3.

Wishing I was playing nitty poker and not whining on 2+2

Question for St Louis players. In the local rooms, how long do you think it would take to start at 1/2 (don't think I could stomach 3-6, 1/2 will be bad enough) and build a bankroll for 5/10 NL and 5/5 PLO using a very small, 6-8 buy in bankroll for every level? Start with $1400 or $1600 and move up when you reach 7 or 8 buy ins for the next level. Figure playing two or three nights a week. Not playing for life money or anything just for fun-no issue with moving up or down and have played for all stakes in St Louis.

A long time unless you run like God for an extended period of time and avoid a lengthy losing streak. Seriously, that's an impossible question to answer.

As Botswami said this is a very hard question to answer, but.....

Starting with $1,600, and assuming variance doesn't help or hurt you too severely one way or the other, and assuming you are a good player who can beat the game at 10bb/hr... let's say 3 nights a week = 20 hours so after 4 months you'd have about $8,000 which is your 8BI you want for 5/10.

I believe that's an accurate statement given the assumptions which aren't crazy by any means.

Again it is a lot of assumptions tho.

6-8 buyins isn't going to last you long at all at the 5/10 or the PLO unless you run like hay zeus. They both play deep and both have gamblers that will take the screws to you just for the fun of it (not sure if you've played in these games).

I'm a huge winner [and have been running ~good for a couple years] in these PLO games and I've swung -5 buyins in a single night more than a few times. If you aren't ready to then you're leaving money on the table and going to get run over by the few who know what they're doing and the LAG gamblers.

You made it clear in your post that you're just doing it for fun, but I think the bigger frustration for you would be spending 6-7 months grinding up a 6-7K roll only to see it erased in a bad night or two in games that are extremely swingy, even for the best players in the area.

I have played and beat all stakes available in St Louis for an extended period of time. I'm a 5/10 NL and 20/40 regular(for more than 5 years) I'm aware of the swings/players etc. With short buy ins I wouldn't be losing 5 buyins in a night. I would be moving down before that happened-which I have no issue doing. I do think the PLO portion will be the most difficult as I have the least amount of experience in that game. I guess I've just been bored playing with same people every day and might give this a shot for a while. I see a lot of players in the 1/2 and 1/3 or 2/5 games that never move up and some of them should. I've never had to build a bankroll from scratch and don't want to try doing it with 20 buy ins or whatever people think is adequate as it would take too long. Losing 7K in a night or two, unfortunately, would not be that frustrating to me as I have plenty of experience at it.

And I did realize right after posting it is almost impossible to answer based on player ability, rungood/bad etc.

At a wild guess after rereading my first answer I'd say 4-8 months.

I started with nothing, literally one buyin, in January of 2012 and was able to grind it up to 1500 by June. From there, I got to 7k by November (5 months), so I would say 4-8 months is a good estimate. My hourly during that time was $29/hour which is what my "long term" 1/2 winrate was. I'm a nit, so it took me much longer to move up to PLO (started playing it September of 2013). I'm pretty close to being comfortable enough for 5/10 NL and 5/5 PLO. It will be great if Lumiere keeps its momentum going on Mondays and Wednesdays, so we have 5/10 NL 4 days a week in St. Louis.

How disappointing is the HPT event at Ameristar in October going to be? It is running at the same time as the WSOPc Horseshoe Hammond event.

The real World Series is scheduled for that weekend as well. If the Cardinals make a run they might have a hard time getting over 200 players for the main.

Sad to see there isn't Limit Omaha 8/better- very disappointing. I'll be at the Circuit instead playing for a ring in their LO8 event.

Doing this again on Saturday 11/15/2014 same location (in St. Charles County). In March turnout was better than expected. Payout was
  • First $800
  • 2nd: $400
  • 3rd: Big Screen TV
  • 4th: $200
  • 5-8 various prizes (Gift Card, Cardinal Tix etc.)

The Winner graciously tried to give back part of winnings to the team - WE WILL NOT ACCEPT!

$40 in advance or $50 at the door. If interested, post or PM me.

Thank you!

Even moderately experienced poker players should do very well! I played in one in the fall - read a couple Harrington books to prepare and finished 8th (the first tournament I ever played) and I'm not good.

It is a great time and very few will play well. (I played in a second one last weekend and the opening ranges were shocking).

If you are interested please post or PM me and I will email information.

Thanks in advanced!

What 10-20 game is running at lumiere? I it running late last night and it's still going. Is this a regular occurrence? Or just some people playing short handed or something like that amongst themselves?

It was heads up. When the 5-10 game broke the remaining two players pumped it to 10-20 and it continued that way most of the day Thursday.

I would suggest Lumiere in downtown stl or Ameristar in St. Charles.

Lumiere will be closer, but not by much. It has typical downtown stuff to do and is by a group of bars within walking distance, will also have plenty of games given it's a weekend.

Ameristar is the opposite direction but is very close to downtown St. Charles main street which has a lot of bars and restaurants via a 3 minute cab ride. It also has the most games in the St. Louis area as of the last year.

I would look on bravo for typical weekend games, Google maps for locations and respective websites for rates.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for your response. Does Lumiere or Ameristar have an on-site hotel? I like to stay where I play preferably. It will be my first visit to the area.

It seems from reading this thread and checking the Bravo app for the last couple days that the main game that runs is 1/3, and no 2/5. A) is 2/5 never run? B) as a 2/5 player what's the best option 1/3 or the 5/10? C) why 1/3?
