Holy Crap! Gulfstream got new chips! You actually can tell the difference between them! Finally went back and saw the beauties with my own eyes.. Also to my surprise they had a 2/5 and 5/10 PLO as well as some very juicy 2/5 nls! Def my new home!

Magic City will have more 2-5 tables and the buyin there is 200-500. You can only straddle UTG for $10 and the game plays somewhat reasonably, by Florida standards (meaning it's pretty loose and plenty of fish at the table).

Miami Jai Alai usually has one or two 2-5 games going. The buyin is unlimited (yes, unlimited) and you can straddle from any position for any amount. You can also restraddle if you're behind the original straddler. The game plays super loose, but there are also going to be a couple or three sharks at the table who buy in for big stacks and pick off the smaller players. I've seen players buy in for ten grand at Miami Jai Alai.

Your other option in Miami is Miccosukee, which is about 30 minutes from the beach or more, depending on traffic. They usually have two or three 2-5 games. The buyin is 200-500, and the straddle rule is UTG for $10. This is one of the loosest games you'll ever see anywhere. I've seen instances where half the table had stacks in excess of $3K. Miccosukee's staff is pretty unfriendly, and the room is incredibly smoky. The only reason to go there is if you're serious about playing at a donkfest table.

If you play at any of these casinos, prepare to hear Spanish spoken a lot (even by the dealers) during hands.

Calder is on the Dade/Broward line, and their 2-5 game is also very loose (the structure and rules are the same as Magic City). There you'll find the cleanest room, the best staff, and they enforce the rules strictly. However, it's not in a great neighborhood.

Gulfstream and Hard Rock are the two closest rooms in South Broward worth driving to, and both have regular 2-5 games with varying skill levels.
This is a good post for players who want to play down here. I will add that as far as the spanish speaking is concerned the dealers do give out warnings. Its not like spanish is being spoken the whole time, all the dealers are aware of the rules. Calder is pretty dead as of late since they got rid off their 500$ high hand on Fridays and Saturdays. I personally play at magic city regularly because they almost always have a 5/10 running (kind of hard to find in south florida for some reason) and they have a good staff. Once i turn 21 in a couple of months im going to check out Miami Jai Alai. I have heard some pretty sick stories about the games that run there. gl all oo and if you are a solid player and you see people looking at you and say the word "tranka" its slang for nit in spanish. just a hu its a preety popular phrase used by Hispanics.

I made a leisurely cross-country trip from Las Vegas to Miami Beach last month where I'm currently renting a condo until November. In the two weeks that I've been down here, I've managed to visit three different poker rooms so far: Hard Rock, Magic City, and Miccosukee. Hard Rock is by far the best of the three although I've never encountered as many incredibly bad players in one place as I have at Miccosukee. Even cruise ship passengers play better than the fish I've seen there.

I'm enjoying my stay so far in South Florida, but there are two things that I hate about playing poker here: Having to pay for drinks in the casinos and the standard $5 + $2 rake everywhere.

Thinking about relocating to FL to Miami, West Palm Beach, Daytona, Fort Lauderdale, or Jax - does anyone know which of these cities has the best PLO cash offerings? Looking to play medium - high stakes (ie average stack $1k-$2k)

In the fort lauderdale/miami area:
Mardi gras gets 1/3 and 5/5 not sure max buy ins, but its at least 1k.
Calder gets 1/2 and 5/5 both are uncapped and play very big.
Gulstream gets 1/3 1k max, 5/5 not sure of max, and bigger games as well, 25/25 etc...
Keep an eye on bravo but all these games run somewhat frequently.

Yes, there are games, but they all have rakes to cover the cost of food, drink and dealer.

For the love of god, can we figure out a way to get some decent 10/20 or 15/30 limit action going somewhere? Omaha/8, LHE, stud, mixed, whatever. All these rooms in South Florida have become overrun with small-stakes holdem nits who play only to try to hit a high hand.

I wish this could happen. Until 4 months ago I lived in the PA/NJ area and these were pretty much the only games I played, with some PLO mixed in. I knew moving down here that these games pretty much were non-existent. If you have enough people, a casino will spread the game but it doesn't seem to be a ton of interest in this area in those games at this time. I sometimes bring it up at tables I am at, and people say oh yea I'll play, but then they don't get on the list when i start it. Here are my few pieces of advice that may give you a chance.

-Pick a casino and try to get people to show up at a certain day and time every week and call a casino ahead of time, on a Friday/saturday night when the room is full they will be less likely to open a new table for you as opposed to the 30 people on the 1/2 list.
-Have the stakes/games agreed upon ahead of time.
-Get 30 people to say they will show up and hope 6 do.
-Be willing to start the game short handed.
-Advertise the hell out of it on these forums.
-Pray

I have seen this attempted at many a casino in the past that did not have a game of a certain type, it would happen for a few weeks but then fizzle out.

THe Parx PLO game is a great example, it had a solid core group for a while, then the action player was banned from Parx. They started the game a certain night of the week, it worked for a while then just stopped happening.

Also you need to focus on the right groups of players. You are right about lots of players trying to hit BS high hand and what not but those aren't the best target group. You are more likely to get 2/5 -5/10 players to play a mid limit mixed game of some sort then 1/2 or 3/6 and under LHE player. Hell the ISLE spreads 4/8 O/8 but they aren't even a group I think you could really get any players from.

I would love for this to happen and sincerely wish you the best of luck. If by some chance you get some interest feel free to PM, I could play any night of the week except for Thursdays.

This happens frequently. The people at the Isle bend over backwards to try to get something going ... they offer reduced rake and help talk it up. But the problem is that people put their name on the list and then don't show up when a game is called.

Sure, i would play that game, would prefer 20/40 or 30/60(do casinos around here have $10 chips?). i despise 1 chip/2 chip structures but LIMIT Omaha hi is really tough to get going, i've only seen it twice in a casino.

Yup, see this all the time. They call these types of game and like 3-5 people show up max, and most people refuse to play short so the game never goes. This is why I think your best bet is to choose a casino, day and time and try to get as many people as possible to show up for it and you may have a shot at getting it off the ground.

I'll probably be at the isle at some point tonight so I'll take a shot at starting 1 of these games. Maybe I'll sit in the 4/8 O8 game and try to needle some of those players into playing bigger

Well no ten dollar chips
What's wrong with 1 and two chip structure
Seems faster

It is probably slightly faster but usually the more physical chips in the average pot the more action in the game. There have been a few discussions on these forums about it, can't seem to find any but the consensus seems to be that more physical chips in a pot the better the action. I can't find any "proof" but observe some limit games and it seems to hold up.

A good example of this is you find hardly any 5/10 limit games run anywhere. Places that play limit games in that range either opt for 4/8 or 6/12, i would assume it is because of the above reason. The pots just look tiny in these a 5/10 or other 1/2 chip game, especially when the table is next to a 3/6 chip or 4/8 chip structured game.

Scooping an $800 pot in reds is just so much more massive than doing it in greens. It is probably more mental, but when it takes a dealer 2 pushes to give a pot out it feels great. It will also be more likely to grab attention of those walking by.

The old 7.50/15(pink chip) games that used to run in AC years ago had massive pots because of this.

The Cali games are a good example of the amount of chips/ action ratio. I LOVE the $3 chip games.
