That is true, but to some degree I think it is a reflection on poker in general. When the 2nd floor room opened, poker was at the height of its boom. A lot of new people were starting to play, the World Poker Tour was immensely popular, and the World Series of Poker was growing by leaps and bounds.
I remember the Showboat having 100+ person tournaments on Fridays and Saturdays. Now, they are lucky to get 40 or 50. Where did these 40-50 other players go? Some may have moved on to other rooms, but the majority are probably simply no longer playing poker. The economy has surely taken a toll, as well.
The simple fact is that poker in 2010 is just not as big as it was back in the day when the Showboat had the 2nd floor room. Even places like the Borgata probably don't see quite as much traffic as those days (probably not the best example, since they had a smaller room then, but the point is still valid). Unfortunately, I don't see poker re-gaining the heights of 4-5 years ago (though legalizing domestic online poker would help) and poker rooms opening in Pennsylvania and Delaware will only make matters worse for the Atlantic City poker rooms.
