Slightly winning but fixing major leaks live player looking to focus on my game just moved to San Diego and loving it here.

I can't believe how hard it is to find an apartment. I've been traveling for 1.5 years and have no proof of income, but I have cash (have rich co-signer if needed) and will get a PT job or something to ease in at first as I may have to go back to being a working professional by after next summer if I can't win at a higher rate..

I want set back up in the states for a few years and this is the place its looking like.

Im staying in a crappy rental studio for 1400 for a month.

Im looking at PB, OB, DT, S/N Park, and a few other places.

My budget is 1000 - 1400, I cant believe how small a place for a 1000 gets you.

Any suggestion of cool areas to live besides the above?

Got my med card and loving the choices in that department, .

Looking forward to getting a place and then some poker/fun.

Thanks!

I moved to Carlsbad a few months ago. It is near the beach and near Oceans 11 if you want to play there. Oceanside is a little cheaper but not as nice. $1000 still won't get a lot, but it is cheaper here than in areas close to the beach farther south. I also had a very tough time finding a place with no job, despite lots of cash and great credit rating.

just say youre self employed and do internet advertising. say you can provide a bank statement showing you have enough to cover a year's worth of rent. easy game.

Not as easy as you would think. I had a bank statement showing 20 years' worth of rent. Still places only think you're stable if you have a job, and it's a sellers' (lessors'?) market here. When someone gets 20 applicants for an apartment the day it is put on the market, they are going to pick someone who has a regular job they can understand.

lie and say you have a job! say you own a business, say you're a writer, make up w/e you want. i have rented 3 expensive places in san diego in the last 3 years and have gotten every place i have applied for. it has never been an issue.

SD rental market is off the hook, wife and I are trying to extend 1 year to have a proper savings for a house and our landlord is hesitant because he wants to jack the rent up.

I'm surprised they wouldn't ask for paystubs or some other verification, some of the places I applied did ask for that.

Thanks for the responses.

I think I will try the internet marketer or writer angle with my next try.

If I can't find something down here, I may look up towards Oceanside in a few weeks.

Tomorrow Im looking at a ton of places, so hope one pans out ...

Wtf I've never had a problem renting and being honest about being a poker player. Worst-case just offer to pay like 6 months up front.

Can always live in TJ and commute for live...

NL, I can't consider myself a poker player at this point. I took two years off to travel and I played a little BE poker, but focused on degening my life away. But paying 6 months off should do the trick if there is small resistance/really like the place.

TJ option sounds great as I speak basic Spanish and the perks down there, but I feel like I'll degen away again very quickly and Im trying to calm down and Latin America (even this close to the States) may be bad idea. But have decided TJ would be good emergency option if I couldn't find a place elsewhere in SD area due to BS.

I've never had any problem If you offer to pay full year up front and sometimes can negotiate slight discount, other times they say no but know you're serious. I would def choose a beach area or DT as at least then when you are home you don't have to drive to go eat drink grocery whatever and the drive to casinos is still gonna be long anyway even if you're in like mission valley etc. (Oceanside excluded)

For $1000-$1500 just get one roommate paying that too and you can get something pretty nice in basically any area. If you're set on playing oceans obviously live up there.

if you plan on playing live poker, i'd recommend university village / hillcrest area. i had a cheap apartment on park blvd just north of the zoo that was a short drive from palomar and not far from the highway to get to village club. can also easily get to DT via park blvd.

PB and OB are obviously awesome for the higher rates, but inconvenient for the live poker commute.

(and i never had any issue getting a place by offering to pay a few months up front and showing a bank statement)

Happy to say I found a place for 1275. Its in PB and has a pool and other stuff. Pretty nice, but only a studio, but very livable. About the same as the place I was paying 400 in Bangkok for earlier this year.

They agreed to rent if they saw six times the monthly rent amount in my savings.

I move in Monday and no longer be living like a refugee.

I'm pretty sure I'll be playing at Palomar once I get back on playing and deal with the short commute. I played there a few years ago and liked it but not sure about the games now. I'm a 2/5 player mostly, but will play 1/3 for awhile to get back into it, and don't think I'll be ready for 5/T for quite awhile.

Does Village spread a good 2/5 game or any of the casinos? Or only O11 in San Diego county?

Thanks..

I'm going for the PLO tourney on the 9th. Too few PLO tourneys in the area, so I will bother to make the trek. I'll show up early and play some satellites, and stick around later, if I get knocked out early, and play the later NLHE side tourneys.

Might make the effort if I knew for sure there would be a cash game afterwards.

there is almost always at least one or two good 1-3 and 2-5 games at the circuit. The good news is the poker room is back where it used to be, not upstairs or in that horrible bar area. And there's a nice craft beer/wine bar right next to it.

I know they will spread it if they get the interest. I played in one a couple years ago.

Thinking of moving here for a month or 2, where's the best areas to set up? Planning on playing bball during the day and some live poker in the late evenings, and going to Mexico every now and then for online. I was thinking I'd be playing at Village Club and Palomar, any other spots for good big bet games or mixed? I like the idea of living in an area I can walk to most normal places and have been kind of looking at south of the zoo places. Any other good spots you guys would recommend?

North Park (Palomar area) would fit that description and has reasonably-priced places (compared to some nicer parts of SD). Downtown/East Village probably more expensive, but close to everything as well.

Beaches are great, but farther drive from Mexico/Palomar/VC.

South of the Zoo in Golden Hill could fit the description as well.

Kind of just depends on type of neighborhood/price-point/how much semi-shady (i.e. typical big city things) matters.

I'm looking to go from vegas to SD for wsopc this weekend. Anyone got a room they want someone to throw $ in on?

I live in Golden Hill, it's perfectly split between Palomar and VC. Very neighborhood type feel with lots of markets and local eateries. It's pretty low key though and probably a little underwhelming if you're only going to be around for a month or two.
