Re: San Diego Poker Group (2)

I'm going to post a reply here so I can search it more easily for next time I'm in san diego. I've been meaning to head out to SoCal very soon anyway, so when I do I'll look up some SD players.

i don't work for o11. i have gotten to know most of the floors and some management people just from playing there over the past few years. management was receptive to taking a meeting with us as there are a few of them who really like plo themselves and have championed our cause from the beginning. we just needed to make our voices heard.

ideally, i would love to see a strong player base develop from this new 1/2/5 game so that we can at some point spread a 2/5 or 5/10 plo game. and maybe even a plo tourney someday.

try it out, you will like it and wonder what everyone is doing at nl.
All this time I thought it was only PLO8! I LOVE PLO high, although I don't have much experience so I need to pick up a book for bankroll preservation purposes As always thanks for your insight.....

Send me to Commerce first, the dealers are also (mostly) crap, but at least the floor can keep things in line.
I have been going to Pechanga every weekend for the past 6 months. I play limit mainly 4-8 w/kill. I have not had any issues with their dealers and have never had the floor called to my table. In my mind, that makes me think the dealers are doing a pretty good job.

Their is usually 8/16 and 15/30 going. I have never played at those levels because I suck at Poker.

I'm going to be taking a trip in a few weeks and I'm wondering what my best options are for poker in San Diego. I play mostly 5/10NL but also some 20/40-40/80 limit and PLO.

Re: San Diego Poker Group (2)

There are 5/10 at Palomar, Village Club (always), and Lucky Lady, Viejas (not that often). All these games 3000 max (five dollar drop). There is sometimes a 10/10 no max at Oceans Eleven (not sure what they charge). There is also "The Big Game" at Palomar, nominally 10/20 hold'em, but they do go much higher, but sometimes 25/25 PLO, or big mixed games (11 dollars per down).

No other PLO than Ocean's Eleven that I know of. The only place that has 20/40 (and up) limit is Ocean's also. Ocean's also has 5/5 1500 max no-limit going all the time, if you want to play smaller blinds.

Read this thread.

Oceans 11 spreads all the games you mentioned.

To start, let me say that I have not been to Pechanga for some time now. However, when I did go regularly, there were too many horrible rulings by the floor and they must have known it because they usually refused to answer any questions about it.

As for the dealers, in general they either cannot or will not control the game. I have had similar issues at Commerce and other places where most dealers do not speak English very well. My guess is that they don't want to be confrontational when they might not be understood.

As a perfect example, this is what happened the final time I was there:
Three handed no limit, two other players in the pot besides myself. I make a big bet, player 2 is thinking and player 3 folds out of position. Now, I normally do not make a stink about a fold out of position but in this particular situation it is a seriously poor mistake. After the hand I ask the player to wait his turn, he gives me some kind of attitude. I then look for the dealer to put him in his place and she won't. I call the floor and they basically shrug it off.

Of course once this idiot knows he did something that irritates me and gets no word from the floor or dealer, he does it again in the next situation he can. Different dealer, same outcome, except I didn't bother to call the useless floor, I just left after the hand.

Rulings are rulings but when a player is out of line the dealer needs to control the **** game and the floor needs to make a ruling and explain it. As a general rule, they do at Oceans, which is where I have been playing ever since.

I know oceans is trying to get their PLO off the ground, but are there players that would like to try to get a 4/8 HORSE going?

Re: San Diego Poker Group (2)

I have played Sycuan, Barona and Viejas this week. Barona is the best casino for house size and food but the poker room sucks. Very small and you have to wait forever for a game, Sycuan is a very small cramped house but the poker room is huge and action is ok. Viejas is by far the best poker room. Food decent and service great. What sucks about CA is you star the tournies short big time. Will never be as good as Nevada.

Re: San Diego Poker Group (2)

played cash at harrah's the other night (sunday) after busting the $340 tourney. played 2/3nl ($400 max) for a lil while til a 5/5nl (no cap) game opened. it was a good game for the first several hours, but broke down about 1:30-2am. [i would have needed to make the final table in the tourney to equal my cash game earn. ] it sounded like there was great action the night before as well. and i'm sure there will be no shortage of good cash games as we approach the main event there.

who else can provide a cash game report from harrah's during the wsop/c?

i still haven't made it out to pala yet. i'm interested to hear any reports regarding the room, staff, service, quality of games, size of games, fringe benefits, etc.
a couple people on my cash table the other night at harrah's were saying the 5/5nl (or maybe it is 2/5nl....?) now goes at pala on saturday nights instead of harrah's. can anyone confirm or provide a report?

Re: San Diego Poker Group (2)

I love Pala. I play there a couple times a week when I can (I drive from Orange County). I don't care too much for O11 because of all the donkey players at the lower limit tables that that place attracts (1/1 $40 max NLHE). Pala has a friendly room, nice people, and the BEST and most comfortable chairs. They know they are in a competitve market and really try to make things comfortable and personalize service. The players are knowledgable for the most part, but beatable. I play tight and make out to the tune of around $15/hr playing the 1/2 tables, and believe me - I'm no poker God.

The downside is during the week the action at Pala is light. Like maybe two tables of 1/2$200max NLHE and one table of 3/6 LHE going in the evenings.

Things are a little busier on the weekends. I was there a couple Saturdays ago, and there was 2/5 NLHE going, along with a few 1/2 NLHE and some 3/6 LHE going - about 9 tables total.

Anyone know if the 2-5 at Viejas runs weeknights on a regular basis? Specifically wed. and thu. nights?

Thanks.

Re: San Diego Poker Group (2)

I am moving back home to San Diego (thank God). I will be visiting for a few days and I am wondering the best place to catch a 2-5 NLHE game mid-week and the best place on a weekend. I got into poker after I moved (2002). I played Viejas before they did a new room, I know Sycuan has a new room, and O-11 is THE old hat in the area. Pachenga is too far for a drive for this visit.

I have been playing Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in CT so I have been spoiled by 85+ table cardrooms. I would prefer at least three 2-5 tables, with at least one 5-10 table running.

Re: San Diego Poker Group (2)

i think the only place you will find that selection is at oceans 11. but the games are:

2/3nl, $300 max
5/5nl, $300 - 1500
10/10nl, $600 - no cap

there are typically no less than 3 5/5nl games that go on any day of the week. sometimes during peak times, there might be up to 5 games. the 10/10nl usually runs a few times per week, mostly during peak hours, but also on thursday afternoons.

i think there are decent games at viejas on thursday nights (at least 1 5-10nl), but i very rarely get down there.

Re: San Diego Poker Group (2)

Thanks. Job-house hunting will be a lot better if I can get to the tables in the evening. I'll either go to O-11 or play some 1-2 someplace.

Just a thought, what about mixed games? I am probably hoping against hope that a midweek HORSE game might be running someplace.

Re: San Diego Poker Group (2)

i heard they spread horse games at this cool new casino called on-line poker. never heard of mixed games running in a public card room in san diego with 1 exception: palomar club's 25/25 or 25/50 HA (nlh / plo) mix. min $10k buy in.

oceans 11 also spreads a 1/2 ($5 bring in) plo game as is discussed in this thread.

if 1/2 is more your speed, O11 has a 2/2 $100 max game. i think the game sucks personally, with a 50bb buy in, but i haven't played it in years, so i can't comment on the beatability.

i play in a home game with friends (not too cutthroat) that is all pot limit games: plo, plo/8, A-5 draw, 2-7, etc. we usually play 2/2 blinds (2/3 for plh). i haven't been in a long time myself, but it's a good group.

Yeah I do play there from time to time. Foxwoods occasionally runs a HORSE game mid-week. Thanks for all the info though I appreciate it, and it sounds like a good group. Thanks again.

second this. I've been playing at Pala a lot lately for the reasons gwjones stated, and it paid off...won their monthly freeroll yesterday: $1000 and a seat in the WSOP main event. The 2/5 game ran all night, as well as a couple of 1/2. They just increased the max buyin of their 2/5 game to $1500, and it was playing really nice. Of course i was playing a bit weird, using the casino's money, heh.

Of course, now i have to figure out how to not be such a huge tournament donk so i don't feel completely stupid in July...LOL

Re: San Diego Poker Group (2)

the freeroll is 40 hours of play over the previous month to qualify. that gets you 3000 starting chips. 60 hours gets you 2000 more chips, and 80 hours gets you another 2000. There's also an optional $10 bonus buy (1000 chips), $25 rebuy (only one for 2500), and $50 add-on for 5000. 25 min levels.

Yesterday's started at 10:30 AM, final hand finished about 6pm. I think the final count was 54 players.

The WSOP seat goes to the winner. this month, the rebuy/addon money went to give 2nd-21st places a seat in the $550 deep stack tourney they're having (30,000 starting chips, 40 min levels i think) on May 1st. Previous months the rebuy/addon cash was a normal prize pool.

They seem to be doing a lot of WSOP satellites this month, not just the ME, but $1500 seats, too.

http://www.palacasino.com/casino/pok...ents-calendar/

I have a feeling i'll be playing more of these, and others around the area. I need live tourney practice, lol.
