I've played at the lucky lady cardroom, the 2/3 300 max buy nl, there was lots of action and the play was very soft. I kinda like it there.

here's my review under marvin:

Welcome to the team Shysti,

I would prolly suggest Oceans, lotta action, u can find the tournament schedule on pg 3 near the bottom. The 2/3 there plays really good, lotta action and ramming and jamming in the gigantic 10-15min sessions I've seen while waiting for a dif. game. Staff is pretty friendly and food is scrumptious and cheap at the 2/3 and tournament lvl. Ask chilidog, he's there like all the time, I'm retired from Oceans pretty much T.T

I just moved back to San Diego (north county) from Vegas. Where can I play 5-10+ nlhe (not mixed with plo)? Days, times and buy-ins would be much appreciated. Don't worry, I'm good for the game and will probably double you up a lot...

Thanks

What about the guy that drives the 1980'S Ferrari and dumps chips like crazy to people? I'm assuming you are talking about the Palomar club.

Visiting the Viejas new poker room tomorrrow, heard they renovated it. Though I liked the old way, the self serve drink thing could be good

I've never been to viejas though it's one of the 3 or 4 18+ casinos. tell me how it is... I'm partial to Barona but Viejas is a tad closer when I'm at school

Even before this renovation it was better than Barona IMO, poker room is 3 times the size, nice service games etc. Headed there in a hour will let you know.

Bump

Viejas moved the room back upstairs. Though not as big as where it was it's still bigger than average. Self serve bevarage station. Good dealers as always and a nice poker room. Still better than Barona.

I just saw in a mailer I get that they redid the poker room. The moved it back upstairs where it used to be I guess. Anybody know why they did this? was the move downstairs supposedly temporary all along or did they just realize that the new location sucked ass?

The room, when it was upstairs, was old and dated. But when they moved it downstairs they had a lot of TVs but they were all too small to really see from the tables. A lot of smoke came into the room because there weren't really walls and people would walk through the room smoking all the time because they were just going through the room and didn't really know you weren't supposed to smoke. The one good thing about the room being downstairs was that food service seemed quicker.

this was in place before they moved the room downstairs. it was nice to be able to get up and get your own soda. Not to be cheap, but just to get up off your ass once in a while and take a short break. Or, if the servers are busy you don't have to wait.

I'd be interested to hear any comments about the new/old/renovated room.

The floor staff told me the casino execs felt like the location of the downstairs poker area is prime casino real estate and they wanted to place higher revenue gaming like slots there.

They could put the poker room In a tent outside and I would still play there over Sycuan. That has gotta be by far and away the worst poker room in Town. The floor staff at Sycuan is the least knowledgeable staff I have ever encountered. The 100 max at the 1-2 makes it a game not worth playing for me and they rarely run a game higher than 1-2. The place is always dead when I'm there. I think I'm just bitter because I live closest to sycuan but can't play there due to the games.

palomar card club has 5-10nl with a $3k max (i think). i've heard the game is great action, but haven't been there in over a year. obv they also host the big game, which can be a mixed limit game, a 10/20/40 plo, HA mix, or whatevs.

viejas occasionally has a 5/10nl game. i believe thursdays is the hot night down there. but i mostly go there during their annual $1k tourney.

oceans 11 has the 5/5nl, $1500max game and the fri - sat 10/20nl game (no max). but you already knew that.

and you forgot the part that comes after you double them up -- felting them.

btw, san diegans:

if you want to get freaked out a little, check out oceans 11 again. a few nights ago, they flipped around all of the tables in the main room, so the dealers are able to see the new podium (which is right outside the manager's office) and the new board TVs. it messes with you a bit at first.

on a good note, the new board TVs are capable of showing more games, so that the PLO list is always viewable. i think the game should generate more interest now that people know the game is spread.

those looking to play mix games in the vicinity of 20/40 limit and 5/10 NL are encouraged to check out the palomar on saturdays. i started the first one this most recent saturday which ran from 3pm until midnight (mix of o8/stud8/nlhe/plo/badugi/2-7 triple draw) which shifted to NLHE/PLO/Badugi/2-7 later on.

gonna miss the next saturday one because my dad is in town, but hoping to make it a regular thing. palomar mix is usually the same group of people playing 200/400, and im hoping to bring some 5/10 players into mix and anyone who reads this is obv invited provided they can get on the board in time.

i heard the big game was most recently 10/20/40 plo.......is your mixed game replacing the "big game"?

are you saying the limit games were played 20/40 and the big bet games were 5/10 blinds?

how about plo / plo8 / o8 / 2-7td ? i'd like to get down there for that, especially if it becomes a regular game......saturday nights are sometimes tough for me though.

Impossible to felt someone when they are jamming chips into racks, asking the dealer for an OUT button, and signaling to the floor that they want a seat in the next smallest game. I mean wtf, when did SoCal become Las Vegas? EVERYONE is hitting and running these days. It's one thing when a recreational player does it, but a "pro"? Come one, that's just short-sided/horrible for the game/weak/ridiculous. I.E. The other day I started the 10-20 at HG and after about an hour of me stealing tiny pots I get cold-decked for a 7k pot. Villain was a young professional who I had a good rapport with. He should have a lot of confidence in his game because he's good. Well... he takes an OUT button and fake plays one more hand before leaving. Inexcusable...

/ rant, I feel better now

Thanks for the info. I'm not good at holding more than two cards at once so the bigger stuff at Palomar doesn't really apply to me. I did play the 5-10 nl there a couple weeks ago. It was 3k cap, but most people just bought in for 500-1000. The game was really nitty in the day but got good once the sun went down. I imagine that is the norm.

Any info on Village Club, Pechanga or Lake Elsinore? I've heard some good things but no specifics about 5-10+ (days, times, buy-ins would be much appreciated).

Also, anyone know the details on that Viejas game?

Sidenote: the Friday 10-20 nl no cap at the O has a very short future imo. A lot of key players are already starting to pass on it/not show up. As much as I love that game, I think the 10-10 3k cap (which is on the board now) has a much better chance of survival. I could see that game going 5 days/week like it used to.

Thanks

palomar:
just talked the other day to a guy who lives right next to palomar, but has started playing the 5/5nl at O11. he said in general, the action is better at O11 (more consistent games running, more support for the main game, less funny stuff going on, etc.). i'd still like to get down there more often though.

pechanga:
i've played there infrequently -- about 1 per month for the past couple years. the main game is a $500 max 2-5nl game that most of the time has 2 tables (must move). people are generally terrible (worse than O11 for sure). as you would expect, nitty / rocky during the day, with some action at night. the few times i've been there on a weekend night, there has been really good action from the club dudes (collared shirt unbuttoned, bling, done up hair, girls in skirts sitting behind, etc.) spilling over into the poker room. i haven't seen it, but i keep hearing that there is a 5/10nl $1500max game that goes on fri and sat nights. the common complaint though is that there is no support for the game, and it typically doesn't last that long.

elsinore:
played there only a few times. talked to a guy who plays there a lot though, and he said the 5/10nl no max usually starts up in the mid-afternoon. i guess all the NL games are uncapped there, but he said most in the 5/10nl buy =<$1k. i think the next biggest game is like a 2/3nl that probably goes all the time.

barona:
sat next to the brother of the chatty / bossy / applebum board girl (james' gf) the other day at O11. i had never seen him before, but he definitely knew what he was doing. i asked where he plays normally and he said barona. i was surprised as i didn't know there was much poker action there. i've never been there. he said there is a 5/10nl game that goes on the weekends with some good drunken gambly action. will wait for more confirmed reports.........

sidenote response:
the 10/20nl game seems to be pretty steady on fridays. i'd be surprised if it branched out into other days, but wouldn't be surprised to see it go for a while. you probably have a better feel for it though. just the other day, i heard a 5/5nl O11 reg who played the old 10/10 some, ask about starting an interest for the 10/10 game -- even though it was friday and the 10/20 was already running! i think the 10/10 could certainly develop some legs if some of the southern SD locals can be convinced to come up more often.

/rant
there was an absolute maniac in our 5/5nl game the other night. he would squeeze so consistently, and raise 90% of his straddles, that the limp / trap strategy was the way to go. so he straddles and i limp along on the button with AK. he predictably makes it $75 and gets 1 caller. i make it $375, and he flat calls (!!!!!) with $215 behind (!!!). flop comes Q54r and he ships, i snap and he shows down QJo. gg buddy. of course my chips find new homes within about 20 minutes and he doesn't rebuy.

oh i forgot another hand from sunday night (i.e., i'm a station!!):

bbv/
(so skip it if you're gonna complain about this post not being SD poker relevant)

button (older guy who had a few drinks) limps, i raise to $20 with AQ in SB, BB calls, button calls.
flop: 345
obv huge flop for me. i lead for $30. BB folds, button raises to $80, i call (naturally).
turn: K
now try to rep that K once you raised on the flop, sir. i check, he bets $100, i call, thinking he might still have diamonds, but somewhat discounting the 66, 77, 88 type hands. whatevs, i'll just spike a deuce, A, or Q on the river.
river: 3
pretty good card for me. if i was behind, i'm still behind, if i was ahead, that card probably didn't change anything. obv he could have flopped a straight or filled up on the river - but it's so hard to make those hands........ i check. he bets $150. i 15 second tank call.

you gotta love hearing the phrase "good call". he rolls his T9o, and i table my AQ high. ship it.

/bbv

1) the "big game" can sometimes be 10/20 half NLHE half PLO, sometimes its 25/50 half anf half, sometimes 25/50 straight PLO,sometimes its 300/600 limit mix. sometimes 10/20 and 300/600 go at the same time.

2) yes, it was stud8/o8/PLO/NLHE/2-7 TD/Badeucey but due to the lineup that particular Sunday (ie some players not knowing rules to split pot games) it got shifted to NLHE/PLO/Badugi/2-7.

3) not sure plo8 is gonna get off the ground in a mix, but a mix of plo/nlhe/o8/t-d could work for sure (adding another game or two as the majority demands it). im not gonna be there this coming saturday but the mix (aswell as most games) start in the early afternoons so you can call them and ask whats on the board or inquire about the mix. the main guy to speak to is Ramy if he's working that day, and if not Ramy then Chris.

also the 5/10 at palomar does have a bunch of hit and runners and a random group of people that will softplay on occasion, but its still a great game, though all of my sessions there lately have been from 9pm'ish to the 2am closing.

you just have to be willing to deal with the fact that 90% of the people at the palomar are scared money above $1000.

Haven't been to the plo game at oceans lately and was wondering around what time it is starting nowadays. Planning on playing on Friday, and I want to get there early enough to get a seat but not so early that I end up waiting for hours, which is what happened to me the last time I played. Thanks in advance.

I played last week, but got there somewhat late. Can't say when it's been starting recently, but as you're aware it could be anywhere from 4pm to 6:30 or 7. I think it's been on the later side recently. When it got short handed , we actually played plo8 and stud8 for a while (with KC and CG and me).
