There are a couple of spread games in san Jose where nl is illegal but they are very small. If I remember correctly there was a big spread game @ bay 101 but it died.
This is incorrect. I was at Bay 101 a few weeks ago and the 5-200 is alive and well, with a long Friday night wait. The max buy-in is $200 with a terrible blind structure (3/5, with 2 on the button). Despite the bad blind structure, there is so much aggresion from the young internet kids that if you are patient and wait for a big hand, you will get paid off (and when they go broke they just pull out the wallet and reach for more Benjamins).
I believe the bigger spread limit game there is a 5/10/5 on the button game with a $1000 max buy-in. Not as many tables as the 5-200 but there still seemed to be a healthy wait list. Additionally, limit games are able to coexist successfully with the spread games.
Also, I believe two other card rooms in the Bay Area, Garden City and Lucky Chances, also offer big spread limit games due to the local gaming laws that prohibit no-limit games.
My guess is that if you're new card room increases the spread to make it more like no-limit it will be a better game. I'd love to check out both rooms, but my trips to MPLS are always for business and not for pleasure.
