With all the talk about Wheeling...

I went there earlier tonight with the intention of playing one last time before I make my nest in the Rivers. I planned on playing the evening tournament and a bit of cash as I drove like a bat out of hell through Washington county. I arrived with ten minutes to spare, because Wheeling is the only room I've ever been to that doesn't allow late registration, and was told that it was sold out at 30 people. Asked the floor lady if she would take alternates, she said nope.

Briefly contemplated playing 1-2, saw two tables running with a list of 4 people.

I walked out the door five minutes later. I am never setting foot in that place again. If I get nostalgic I might trek to Mountaineer once or twice a month, but never Wheeling Island.

Gamblers stake their fortunes on table games
Thursday, July 08, 2010
By Timothy McNulty, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Eighty people stood in line for the official opening of table games at Rivers Casino at 6 a.m. today, and another 200 playing slot machines pounced once the new section opened.

"Six tables in the poker room were full and people were screaming at the craps table -- you couldn't have written a better script," said the casino's general manager, Todd Moyer.

The new offerings at the North Shore casino include 86 table games, including a poker room with 24 tables, blackjack, craps and roulette.

Table games were also being launched this morning at the Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Washington County and at Presque Isle Downs and Casino in Erie.

"I was talking to people, and they were wearing it as a badge of honor to be the first to ever play the tables," Mr. Moyer said.

Rivers Casino security had roped off the table gaming area until it became officially licensed at 6 a.m., and gamblers began streaming in once the ropes were dropped. Since the casino is open around the clock, the section "will never close again," Mr. Moyer said.

State legislators approved table gaming this year -- four years into the state's embrace of legalized slots -- to help plug the commonwealth's chronic budget deficit. Its share of table games revenue will go directly into its general fund, unlike slots revenue, which is mostly applied to property tax relief.

The Innovation Group, a consultant that did projections for a group of casino operators, estimated that by 2012 table games will generate $865 million a year overall and $103 million a year in tax revenue for the state.

Pennsylvania keeps 14 percent of table games revenue. Host counties and municipalities each get 1 percent.

I am heading over later today as well. They said they have eight tables going right now, so they don't anticipate a long wait. The NL is 1/3, and the only limit game right now is a 4/8. I would love if that was the regular limit game - I prefer limit ideally but I was generally playing NL on my trips to WV since 2/4 limit games with a $5 rake ain't really my thing.

I went with my wife. We played from 9:30 till about noon. The list system is not working they are doing all list by pen and paper? The room overall looks great, the dealers are much better than when WV opened. Overall mood in the room was great, only issue may be when the room is completly full working waiting list with out they computer system may be an issue. When i left the room was about 80% full Mostly 1-3 games only one 2-5 game running.

Thanks for the report! 80% full at 9:30am? Now I'm worried that when i get off work it will be packed. How were the players in general? Obv we (2p2-ers) are going to be the better out of the group but I was curious of how many donks were at your table. 75% donks 25% decent players? Thanks!

Went down for lunch. Almost at capacity playing 4/8L, 5/10 I think, 1/3NL, and 2/5 NL.

Play is still god awful, so if you can stay on the good side of variance you're going to have a great time!

EDIT: It WILL be packed when you get there, and the Bravo is not working yet so they can't use the electronic waiting list yet. Pencil and paper. But totally worth the wait.

Still working with paper, looks like about 30 waiting for 1 3 but I'm guessing most of the tables are for that s it should move fast.

I;m sure they did. But when they designed a 24 table poker room, they are thinking in the long run, not the first week. After about a month it will die down and have a normal flow of people and it will not be filled to capacity with 50+ waiting.

FYI: I just called, and they will let you put your name on the list in advance by phone. You just dial 412-231-7777, then hit 0 for operator, and then tell them that you want to get on the waiting list for the poker room. GL
