Many are 6 months. Some are a year. I know of one that is only 3 months.
With many, if they have a credit card, online gaming, or other way to register activity w/o going to the casino, you can use those to keep the points active.
Also if you are a big enough player, and something happens where you "barely" miss the 6 months window, a VIP host can (but not always will) reinstate them
