Folks, here is an email that I sent to Davey. I haven't received a response yet - only sent it a couple of days ago. But I wanted to post here and see if others are in agreement with me. Place has been open for almost 2 years and I see nothing that tells me RWC will ever be a major tournament destination - forget about major sponsored events/series. Will NYS ever have a poker tourney heavyweight? Right now all we have is Turning Stone (weak) and Niagara, ~250 and ~400 miles away from anyone in NYC metro area. Pathetic in my view.

Hello,

I called the room yesterday to complain about the lack of larger tournaments at RWC. I have played in a few of the multi flight nlh tourneys and they are well attended and well run but the last one was in August. Now I see that the $400 bounty tournament has been removed from November schedule. What is going on? How is this room supposed to get any momentum if you don’t serve the tourney players regularly? When I called, the polite person I spoke to told me that the tourneys are a lot of work and that the room is short staffed. I get that tourneys are not big money makers for the room, but what about serving the customers and building loyalty – which is not happening. Besides, look at the room results when there are large multi flights – the room has a higher gross. Players play cash after busting out. And… we eat a lot of meals, the resort should care about that, no?

The piece about short staffed. How? I thought that the whole reason for putting this place in shitty Sullivan was because of all the folks who need jobs?? Casino dealer has to be a great opportunity for these people. Decent pay and tips, not hard work, flexible hours, nice environment. WTF. What a boondoggle. I guess I (and lots of my friends) have to keep driving to Foxwoods and Borgata every month. And sometimes Parx and Rivers.

@Ameripoker

I agree. I love RWC and would much prefer coming here for poker but they just don't have the options for tournaments that I could get going the opposite way towards Foxwoods/Mohegan and even Springfield MGM.

Even some small weekend series stuff or 1 day $500-600 tournaments.

For what it is worth, I probably wouldn't answer your email as written. The first paragraph is decent enough, but the second is horrible. You managed to insult management, the location, the staff and that type of work "not hard".

It looks like you just don't want an answer, and are looking more to just gripe.

As far as what I have seen, this casino was just taken over by an investor in Indonesia and is almost $100 million in debt. Short staffing is probably the rule.

EDIT: I do want to add that your complaints are legitimate as a customer. I just think your email isn't conducive to anything.

agreed.
i even had to reread it to realize the second paragraph was actually a part of his email.

Are you kidding? How did I insult management or the staff? Casino dealer is a hard job? What world do you live in? Don't get out much, eh?

I'm a customer, and casinos are a service industry - and last I checked - an increasingly competitive one. I think they should grow their customer base, I'd be happy to be a more regular patron. But their tourney offerings are bush league (there, there's an insult). I'm less than an hour away from RWC, but I have to drive a lot further to other casinos that offer the services I desire.

Monticello is a dump and it is too far away from NYC metro, nothing will change that. How many times were we told when these licenses were awarded that the benefits to the local economies in terms of taxes and jobs were of paramount importance? And now the place is teetering financially...and short-staffed!

How is it short staffed? There are a bunch of reasons why it's hard to find staffing in "sh***y Sullivan" here are just a few:
  • The economy is at an all-time high
  • Unemployment is at an all-time low
  • Sullivan county isn't a heavily populated county
  • Dealing live casino poker isn't a job for everyone to say the least, and for a beginner, it's certainly not going to be easy. It's going to be hard.
  • It's not a high paying job that everyone is diving into
  • Hours and days are not guaranteed. If it's slow, dealers go home.

Save yourself the high blood pressure and take your own advice to keep driving to Borgata and Foxwoods.

The normal Saturday bounty event was moved back one week into December due to the holiday. That’s all. In fact there is a larger one day event pending in its place.
We have 6 new dealers next week and are Staffed well enough for tournaments within the poker room boundaries. The poker room is growing and will continue to do so at a reasonable pace.

it's a room that on most night has what ten tables running tops? mostly all 1/2 nl. what kind of tournaments do you think they're actually going to get.

the second paragraph in your email is terrible you insult a bunch of different things and are condescending. you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.....

look i'm closer to resorts than parx or borgata and it's a much more pleasant drive to resorts and you don't get fisted on tolls the entire way either which is nice. i wish they had more players and bigger games but they don't.if they did it would be easier to get the tournaments you desire in shitty sullivan county.

you're right about the bolded- but these reasons why the place can't sustain the tournaments that you want.

Yep, I'll go to RWC probably each and every time they run a multi flight gtd tourney. But Borgata in Nov and Foxwoods Megastack in Dec. - and thats that. I'm not young enough to drive there and back anymore, so I just stay and enjoy a couple of nights out.

btw didnt they get like 700 buy ins for one of the recent gtd tourneys? seems like something to build upon, no?

oh and, Snipers35 - its a Malaysian group that bought the remainder of the casino that they did not already own...not Indonesian. There is a difference.

It would just be nice if they did more smaller/daily tournaments too. No reason they cant put up a $100+$25 10am tournament on Saturdays. It will finish up well before games start getting filled in the afternoon/evening.

If I wanted to play a tournament at RWC I have zero choices on pretty much every Saturday. If I go to Foxwoods which is just a few minutes further for me I have 4-5 options for tournaments on that day.

Obviously I'm not expecting them to have a schedule like Parx/Borgata/Foxwoods but literally ANYTHING would be nice.

Does anyone know how many runners they get for the Sunday $150?

It’s funny. I am free this weekend and decided to check bravo as I am 2 hours from resorts. I didn’t see anything interesting and haven’t seen much ever posted for tourneys.
I agree with everything you wrote. Turning stone keeps shrinking their guarantees despite they always covered. Many angry people with them. And Foxwoods is about 2hr45 min drive from Albany which is kinda annoying as well. Luckily my home casino (rivers) has decent tourneys despite being smaller than all of the above casinos.

OUR Guarantees at TS have been the same for the last 3 years, $50K for $250...$75K for $300 and $100K for either $570 or $250 and we do at least one sometimes 2 almost every month. To say the guarantees at TS are weak or continue to shrink is nonsense. The days of $250k Guarantees and all the requirements necessary to hold one are over as the area is too saturated with events. There are well over 10 new poker rooms in the northeast area near NY in the last 3 years. The more populated areas will always have an advantage because traveling is not necessary anymore to play events. they are readily available.
I keep hearing from the same 4 players or so in here about what we do wrong and about 600 or so of our guests thanking us for what we do right. In addition, I have asked JK, Carl and all the other naysayers on 2+2 to call me or stop by to discuss if they really want to discuss. So far I have heard from no one over the last year and a half. If you really want discussion and answers get in touch with me. Ive posted numerous times how to reach me. Hang in there Davey!!!

I’d assume they’re going to stay open until closing is mandatory, which probably isn’t far off. For some reason I don’t see a business model that’s never given a **** about their customers or employees start now. Unless they feel they can make more from their business interruption insurance - then they’re closing ASAP - apparently we haven’t hit that point yet.

They are open now with a pretty good high hand promo going on.

I've been communicating with the casino to try to cash out a sports betting slip, and there is NO indication of when the casino may reopen, let alone the poker room.
