Bosox, I just PMd you, but I do want to add that the Rialto, as mentioned in post #99, is a place I've heard a lot of buzz about. They're located pretty close to the club I run, so we're sort of in competition with them, but they're really pushing cash games there and from what I hear they run them in a more traditional cash style than most of the rest of us do. If you're anywhere near downtown, you'll def want to stop in there.

I just moved to the Portland area and am curious about the local poker scene. I know the way the clubs work, with the daily fee instead of rake. However I haven't seen any updates about the cash game "tournaments" that some posts mentioned. Did these ever take off? If so where do the run with the most consistency?

Thanks all.
IMO finaltable poker club has the best and most all day and now have a bad beat jackpot with $2500 and $30 added every day.

bump. I tried searching for Spirit Mountain casino thread but I didn't find anything. What do you think about the quality of the games? The poker room seems to get meh turnouts on the weekends (2/3 1/3 tables, 1-2 2/5 tables, 1 5/10) and from what I hear it's dead during the week.

Where are all the cash games in the salem/ portland area?

are the "cash" games profitable at all? i'm curious what it's like and it doesn't seem like a game that would attract fish.

I'm not the person to ask about profitability, I'm not a good NLHE cash player (I do well in tournaments) and don't have the stomach or bankroll for the short-term variance.

However, these are rake-free games so it's hard to imagine how a competent player wouldn't make a profit. There are plenty of regular players at my club and others around town who play these consistently and claim to make money. I imagine if you can put up with the variance of playing against relatively short stacks, and account for the variables of time limits and other restrictions, you could do very well.

A warning for anyone thinking of making the drive to play at Pendleton in the next week, they have changed their structures from those that are posted online. Most only have one level removed, but in what was already a somewhat quick structure that one level can make a big difference.

Hi, I'm working on moving to the Portland area. I just really wondered with this "shootout" format how much different do these games play vs the games I'm used aka at Foxwoods/Sun here in Ct, Vegas,AC & San Diego Indian casino games. I'm normally a 1/2 or 2/5 player. also is NLH the only thing spread or will I find some PLO or stud also?

BUMP. Are there any Oregon players who play NLH for a living? I don't even think its possible but shoot me a pm if you do I want to hear your thoughts

It's possible if you live cheaply enough. But yes, Oregon doesn't seem the best place for live NLHE grinding. Everyone I know who has any real claim to being a pro is either playing online as well as live, playing more than just NLHE regularly, or a straight LHE specialist up in La Center.

Then again, there's probably a few lurkers itt who have dedicated themselves to finding all the best deepstack / underground / rakeless Portland club games down to 1-2 NL, so you'd have to listen to their case as well.

Ok, I'm new to PDX and I just read this entire thread. I am thoroughly confused. The site I usually use to find games doesn't help one single bit.

For background, I've played NLHE at Foxwoods, PA, Tunica, OK, Las Vegas, and So. Cal. Those are my reference points.

Anybody care to give me some sort of overview as to what the heck poker in Portland is like, and perhaps a list of a few places to try? You can leave out the Indian casinos. I know how those work, and I've already checked out the room at Spirit Mountain. It's these local clubs that bewilder me.

ETA: I get the door fee tourneys, and I think I understand these 90 minute shootouts, but some of the info seems old, and people keep mentioning $1/2 games and strippers and changing laws and lesbians and holy crap wtf bbq?

I'm going to be in Portland for the first time on 5/29-30. I'll be staying at the Hotel Lucia in the city (400 W Broadway). Are there any good clubs within walking distance (or a short cab ride) of where I'll be? I mainly play 1/2 NL (or 2/100 spread limit) when I play in Vegas/Florida/MN/IA, or else I'll play tournaments in the $50-150 range. I think I'm understanding how the Portland area clubs/games work after reading this thread, but now I'm looking for recommendations for the best places to play while I'm visiting.

Also-- Do the shootout-style tournaments just start up whenever there are enough people ready to go? If I prefer a cash game, where is the best place to look for these shootouts? Is there any major difference between the shootouts and a regular 1/2NL cash game (other than the time limit)? Finally--do you tip the dealer after each hand like you would in a 1/2 game?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

jj

I was just up in La Center. IMHO, the Last Frontier runs a nice room. Only problem is that it is Limit only, no NL - they have tried to get a $100 spread game going, but it fizzles after a few days. The limit games go from 2-4 all the way to 15-30. Being as I had not played limit in like 7 years. I got myself into a 3-6 game. Played for 5 hours and was down $30.00. I was completely rusty, but I feel it is a beatable game. They asked me if I wanted to move up in limits, but I was too chicken. However, a reg says that the higher limits there, people are more clueless. I will probably be playing there 2-3 times a week up until I hit the WSOP in July.

Hell, if I start making some decent ROI, I may just skip the WSOP and continue to play up there, but I am going to have to sharpen up my Limit game LOL

So, if I had the chance to hang out and play a tournament and/or NL cash game for one day - anywhere in between Coos Bay and PDX - where would you recommend?

Casino or club? Where are the biggest fields and where are the best structures?

Thanks! Anyone doing the Portland Beer Fest action?

I'll be in Beaverton (outside Portland) the June 16, 2012 weekend, and I might have the time to fit in some poker while the girls go shopping.

If I've read things right, my choices are between some private door fee clubs that run some wonky NL MTTs versus some limit poker at The Last Frontier / The New Phoenix?

I'd prefer just a simple run-of-the-mill 1/2 NL or 1/3 NL game (if I've read right, not really available?), but I could also make do with a 2/4 - 4/8 limit game (The Last Frontier best bet?). Fun / safe atmosphere a priority.

I thought 'merica was like land of the free and stuff. What's with your lame-o poker laws?

I might go shopping with the girls instead.

Gambling is regulated state-by-state, which means it is regulated by state governments, which skew toward social conservatism.

Take your family to the Beaverton Farmer's Market on Saturday morning of your visit! There will be a bunch of delicious stuff.

After that, head into downtown Portland. There is so much to see, eat, and especially drink there you will forget about poker for minutes, possibly hours.

Anybody see Encore is doing shootouts much more often now?

http://www.encoreclub.com/

Anybody who's tried them out, how's the game? Full of regs? Just seems like the format wouldn't attract fish but I have no idea.

e: i noticed i asked a similar question couple months ago lol

The Oak Tree Casino up in Woodland Wa (35-40 minutes up I5 from Beaverton) has a good 2-10 spread game going most of the time. Plays like an active 4-8 and in my opinion is a lot more fun and action most of the time. Good people running the room and the dealers are great.

For a true NL Spirit Mountain is the closest. About 1 hour 10 minutes from Beaverton. Good room. Good action on the weekends. 1-3, 2-5, and runs a 5-10 on the weekends. Best to call and see what is being spread.

I guess I should give a more in depth explanation. At a 9 handed 1/2 game, there were 2 semi thoughtful players, but they played super nitty. The rest of the table looked like they came straight from their kitchen table home game.

I didnt hit any big hands, but I stole and thin valued my way into a $180 win in 1hr 45mins. The lack of rake coupled with no dealer tipping till the end probably represented $40 of that win.

I think I could achieve a $25+ win rate at this game.

Town deserves a better thread than this. Here's what I know:

- The 2-5 NL at Spirit Mountain is now uncapped instead of 500 max buy-in. This is great news, except it may well kill the Saturday 5-10 game. Lots of the older crowd who swing the 5-10 into starting seem to prefer uncapped 2-5, which makes me sad.
- The Last Frontier still has good LHE games, but there are far more solid regs there than before, especially in the 30/60. You'll still find some special fish up there on Mondays, many of whom don't stoop to playing any of the smaller games, but you'll also find several pros spread out between the main game and the feeder.
- Private games are still where the real money's at.
- I know almost nothing about the poker clubs. The 1-2 Big O shootouts at Final Table have been a lot of fun the times I've played. I'm curious to hear about the Aces 2-5 games if anyone is a reg there. I'd also be interested to hear anything from behind the scenes at a certain club I won't name that hosts big private games.
