Is this place only going to have tournaments? Will they have pseudo-cash games like the little clubs in town? Or have they been approved for real cash games?

Portland Meadows Poker Room must still follow the Portland social gaming rules. Shootouts only, buyin ranges and shootout logistics will be ironed out this week.

Well, that's disappointing. Had hoped the government had approved them to be a traditional poker room.

I was thinking more of having actual poker games that you can enter and exit at anytime, go to that bathroom and miss a round without having your blind folded away, etc.

Really was hoping they would be able to take the limit holdem cash games from the casino in La Center. But honestly if the laws haven't changed, it's kind of unlikely such a big operation will be able to fly under the radar like the small clubs mostly manage to do, by pretending cash games are really tournaments.

I foresee them either not having anything other than real tournaments, or if they have enough pull, the government giving them an exemption to run real cash games. Unfortunately, yes, they probably will then start raking the pots.

Has it been said how they will get their revenue as is? Charging a $10 daily entry fee like most of the small clubs do?

Yes of course. That is the law, they get no special treatment.

I'm really surprised that a racetrack would want to go to the trouble of building a nice poker room when they are only going to get $10 a day from their customers. Maybe they're hoping they're going to get a lot of extra horse bets from the room. But don't most rooms not even pay their dealers, they "volunteer" and work for tips only? I can't imagine a big racing company getting away with that, so their expenses should be much higher.

A racetrack that has live racing like 35 days a year. They already had the space. It's a way to get people in the door to spend money on anything they offer. At little cost to existing operations.

The volunteer dealers is a weird one citywide and I don't expect it to last much longer anywhere. Just a few folks and a lawyer can probably bring it down.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking about the volunteer dealers. If the racetrack tries to have them as well, it will bring more publicity to the practice. If they don't even try that, or if all places are forced to pay their dealers, they will almost certainly start charging more than $10 per day.

I don't know Portland or Oregon politics, but I think it's not impossible that they will be given some type of exemption to start offering games with rake, or possibly even slot machines. It has gradually happened in lots of states across the country as the horse racing industry has been gradually dying.

Haven't given any thought to how this locale is different than the other clubs. They seem intent to run it like every other.

Laws are here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambling_in_Oregon

Portland Meadows Poker Room is 100% bound by the social gaming laws just as the rest of the clubs in Portland. It will have ONLY a $10 daily cover. But for that $10 you get the nicest club and one of the biggest in the NW. The best chairs in Portland (probably the entire NW)! USB chargers at every seat in the house. Video lottery, off track betting horses and dogs, keno, full restaurant, 3 full bars.... and to cap it all off 1200 parking spots!
How can I post a picture from my phone?

Is there a plan for shootouts from day 1? As someone with a full time 9-5 job who still likes to play it is tough when most of what is out there is tournaments that take 8 hours to win, like at Encore. I live right in the neighborhood and as much as I hate the chip down and stuff, would appreciate a place I can show up and play some "live" for a few hours.

Shootout details will be setup this week, YES shootouts will be available from day 1. We are thinking about starting them @1PM. Exact duration and min max buyins chip downs and all other aspects of shootout details will be discussed and posted before we open on the 16th.

Good to hear. Putting in a plug for limit hold 'em and/or mixed games if you are taking feedback.

Sign up at 8, game starts at 9. Seats filled by 8:05. If you are dead set on playing go at like 7:30 and get a beer and take in the ladies.

The volunteer dealer thing is an attempt to work around the prohibition on the "house" (including employees) materially assisting in the operation of the game for profit. The AG doesn't buy it, but doesn't care enough to do anything:

Quote:
Consequently, if a group of friends gathers to play and one does not want to bet in the game, but offers to deal the cards, the game would qualify as a social game if all other requirements are met. But as discussed further below, such a dealer may not receive a tip or any fee, due to language in the definitions of “player” and “social games” (i.e., the “house”
prohibitions) that forbid anyone from dealing cards for a fee or remuneration.
http://www.doj.state.or.us/agoffice/...s/op2010-1.pdf

Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries already determined that "volunteer" dealers at Ace of Spades (now "The Game") were actually employees, and found wage violations. Problem with that finding is if they're employees, they're materially assisting the game on behalf of the house, and the game is illegal.
