Just had to google that to see if it was true, and was shocked to discover that it is. Only in Portland. From the yelp reviews, I don't think they're likely to start spreading <snicker> a poker game there, as the vegan gimmick seems to bring in plenty of customers.

As I mentioned, music is very loud, and lighting far from ideal. At one of the games people literally use candles to see their cards. I can put up with it, since the games are juicy. Only thing that really bugs me is the two clubs I play at don't start playing until 10:00 pm, and shut down at 2:00. The games are nearly always full or close to it right when they start, so I have no idea why they don't try starting earlier, at least 9:00. Dealers working on tips alone, so figure they'd be interested.
A new game just started at Jodys and the dealer shows up at 7pm. I was there Friday and the table had 4k on it and was playing like a small 2/5. I went in on Saturday and game was really small so hit and miss I guess. Better lighting than the small room on Powell which was nice.

Hey guys. Sorry for not lurking the whole thread before posting. Couple questions. First, what nights and times does the 1/2 game at Lucky Devil run? Second, is there any decent 2/5nl to be played around here? The closest thing I could find is Muckleshoot about 2.5 hours north.

Final table on 122nd and Glisen seems to get a 2/5 going every Tuesday and Thursday. Ace of spades on barber also has 2/5 that runs daily.

Note - the game at Jodys is over for now as the club has been sold. To bad as the game was just getting solid. The dealer told me that a new location was being looked at...stay tuned.

I made a separate thread asking about this but it was suggested I ask in here:

"I'm in Texas right now and want to move somewhere I can play poker. Las Vegas is the obvious choice, but I lived in Eugene for a couple years (2009-2011) and it is by far the best place I have ever lived as far as quality of life. When I was there they had several strip mall poker rooms, but the only one I went to any was one downtown called Full House Poker. At the time they were spreading 1/2 NL and 2/5NL I believe, as well as running frequent low-stakes tourneys.

I'm just wondering what the scene is like several years later. Is it possible to make a living? For me, this is $20 - $30 an hour, which is what I was making online before Black Friday. I don't have a lot of experience with live play, though, as I only went to this room a handful of times after Black Friday. My ex-wife was insisting I give up on poker and I mostly obliged.

Bend and Portland are also places I'd enjoy living.

Really I'd love to live anywhere in the Pacific Northwest with a good poker scene, especially Vancouver, though I doubt I could get citizenship. I'd appreciate information about the rest of this region as well. "

I don't think it is realistic to make a living playing poker in Oregon. The scene in Portland is similar to Eugene. A handful of clubs with small stakes tourneys. Two clubs that also have a bit bigger tournaments $10,000 to $50,000 guarantees (once or twice a week for the $10K's and once a quarter for the $40-50K's). These clubs have "shootouts" that play like a 1/2 no limit cash game with a time limit. One club in town runs 2/5 NLHE games, but has been shut down a couple of times. It is cheap to play in Portland. The clubs only charge a $10 door fee and no rake is allowed by law. Speaking of rake you can find some raked "home" games where the organizer makes money from the tips and the rake, but these are illegal. I believe there are a handful of players making money at the clubs playing tournaments daily, but you probably need a part time job at least to supplement you're income.

If you're comfortable with playing $1/2 mostly for the majority of your living, then Portland is fine. $30k-$40k from $1/2 @ the clubs alone is certainly attainable. I speak from experience. You can get volume from 12pm-2am daily and a few private games run nightly. There are a few public $2/5 games, in fact, but they don't run consistently throughout the week. My recommendation if that wage doesn't suite you, then move to Seattle or Cali to get consistent volume in bigger games.

Thanks for the replies. I'd be comfortable with making 30k at least for a while. Once I'd built up my bankroll enough and felt I was good enough to move up in stakes I'd probably want to move. It seems like Vancouver would be a decent place to live for poker but there's all the immigration issues. Cost of living is really high but in my situation the money I'd save from their health care system would make up for the difference.

And of course there's Las Vegas but I'd rather make 30k in Oregon than 50k there. LA doesn't seem like an option due to the high cost of living. Unless I'm already good enough to crush 5/10 I don't think I could afford living there.

And the main problem is I'm not sure at all how good I am at live games. I've played almost completely online. I don't have nearly enough hand history live to assume I'd be able to beat anything but the lowest stakes, though I think it's probable I could beat higher stakes. I'm just not willing to try that without playing a lot of lower stake games first to convince myself I'm not going to spew off my bankroll.

Is it possible to make any kind of living playing the donkaments? My standards for "making a living" at this point are pretty low. I'm a much better tournament player than cash game player though I'm confident I can beat low stakes cash games.

Go to Portland. There's no better place to try and build a roll playing live low stakes. I wouldn't do it though. Get a job and play 2/5 on the side.

There used to be enough 2/5 games throughout the week in the portland area. I'm not sure how much has changed.

A few guys appeared to play poker for the majority of their income. They played ok, played all the time, always the biggest game.. I ran into at least one of them wherever I went. But I wouldn't be surprised if each of them had something on the side.

Oregon isn't a particularly wealthy state, pockets aren't real deep and the player pool is sort of small. Seattle area is wealthier, and is arguably the best area on the west coast.

I say if you were to try (I recommend you don't), move to portland and hope you run good at 2/5.

edit: also i heard that club in eugene drops $3/hand for a bad beat, heard it killed the room. Portland would be your best shot.

good luck

Haven't seen an update on spirit mountain lately. How are the games there or at chinook winds? I'm headed down the 101 in early September and would like to make a few poker pit stops. 1-2 or 2-5 nl or 10-20 Omaha. Thanks

Similar I suppose, but the difference in rake makes such a huge difference. In Eugene the rake would make playing professionally virtually impossible. The "rake" in Portland however is as good as it gets for cash and tournaments compared to any place I've ever played live poker in a legit room (eugene, portland, LV, reno, blackhawk CO, baluxi, new orleans)

I also have lowish standards for making a living, and yes you could do so in donkaments in pdx. The reason is, you pay a $10 door fee and then no fees on the tournies. So you play 3-5 tournies in a day and you end up with $400 in tourny entries with only $10 going to the house. no dealer add on chips, nothing like that. The dealers work for tips, so tip on cashes. 10% is standard, less than that and you get flack, more than that you get a thank you, but they are super grateful for 10% in my experience.
