Re: PARX Poker Thread

In vegas there are uncapped 2/5 games...this one old man reg there had like $500 - $1000 in chips and one cranberry colored chip (worth $25,000) that he put on the bottom of a stack of red $5 chips...he said every now and then he'll bet the stack to make it look like $100 and when someone says call, they called their stack

anyway, I don't know how it is in PA but everywhere else I've played you are supposed to put your big chips on top so it's visible and lots of times dealers will say something

Thats such a blatant and horrible angle, that any half way competent floor would never allow it...

But there was a funny story somewhere here about a guy that would buy in for 3 bricks of cash at the wynn's uncapped game, and got ***** smacked in a 20,000BB pot by a reg that just topped his own stacks quietly with cranberries...

I saw this effect action twice yesterday.

In AC and other rooms around the country, any chip above $100 is easily distinguished both by size and bright unique colors.

If you can't change the chip due to law, I would STRONGLY recommend changing them out at 2/5NL and lower as a standard policy. There's no point having anything in play larger than $100 chips at that level.

This is a great point. On Saturday while playing 2/5 NL, I rasied another player 400 on the river putting him at having roughly 400 left in his stack. I was in the 10 seat and he was in the 2 seat. Therefore, it was hard to see his stack really well. He had a purple chip amongst his $5 red stack. I had the nuts so I did not care when he went all in and I realized he also had a purple. However, it is a problem even if you look at someone's stack to make sure because the color scheme is too close for comfort (esp. when the $2 chips also blend in).

I think oversized chips at this point will not happen. Therefore, $500 chips should not play at 2-5 games.

Re: PARX Poker Thread

Quick rule check please: Is a player's hand dead if it touches the muck at Parx?

Three times, I've seen players accidently muck their cards, thinking the hand is over. The dealer caught the cards so they were easily retrievable. Different floor people ruled twice that the hand was not dead if "retrievable", even though the cards touched the muck. Another time, the hand was ruled dead because a corner of one card touched the muck, regardless. Can someone please clarify the rule?

Re: PARX Poker Thread

Chips at Parx are in my opinion the biggest issue - i made a post about it before as well because not only do larger chips fit in, as mentioned, but smaller ones get lost in 5 dollar stacks - meaning you can get shorted.

had a quick PM discussion w/ Rapini about what can be done - if we dont see a change simply due to the presence of these concerns in this thread, its worth PMing Ari and/or simply talking with him about it. if anyone speaks to him, perhaps posting on here and letting the rest of us know to do the same will bring some solutions to these issues. they simply need to keep some chips out of some games and if they cant swap out the 500 dollar chips for larger ones/different colors, make a floor ruling which effectually states that chips hidden from sight that are larger denominations do not play. (or worded differently: large denomination chips must be clearly visible or they will be ruled as not in play). this can work to someone's disadvantage, so players ahve to keep a watchful eye as well, but it also removes the angles available.

The $500 and $1k chips aren't a different size? Wow, that's new. That definitely opens up an avenue for the dirty stack anglers. Now that we know this, it would probably be a good idea to wait until the dealer counts down a stack that is bet? I think this would effectively thwart the anglers efforts until changes can be made to the diameter of larger denomination chips.

Isn't it a common rule amongst casinos to have your larger denomination chips visible to the table at all times anyway? Or does that just apply to tournies?

No, it is definitely a rule in cash games as well. The issue is that they are similarly colored enough that for some folks they can be hard to spot, even if they are "visible".

Oh my. I haven't seen them yet, I'm still a micro player. But when I used to play alot of BJ years ago, $500 chips were a noticeably different purple, and the $1k chips were a noticeably different orange and larger.

I would say a change is in order. But until then , so no1 gets stacked unnecessarily, I would wait until a bet stack is counted down by dealer just to be safe. Also, maybe Ari could give a heads up to dealers to look out for this and enforce the " large denominations need to be visible " rule.

Re: PARX Poker Thread

These chips should not be in play at 2-5 and below, especially when they are not oversized or do not have bright colors, as other posters have already stated. Plain sight rule or not, players will still find ways to find angles if these chips are allowed.

Re: PARX Poker Thread

i'm not sure why- but at least in 2/5 its not like you could ever sneakily "add on" a nickel or dime without going over max buyin or changing out some other chips. in 5/10 or games with higher allowed buy ins its different but i cant' really see someone angleshooting 2/5 with an orange chip.

also in a lot of 5/10 or even 2/5 games at other places cash plays and people keep most of their stack in cash, so its pretty standard to know everyones stack size at the table or at least find out before making a big decision- your best defense against the angle is playing smart poker, not asking the casino to enforce a ban on certain chip denominations

I normally would agree with you.

However, have you played at Parx?

1 - The $2 and $5 chips are often confused because the $5 chips feature alot of blue and the $2 chips are blue.

2 - The $500 chip is purple. However, it has more of a redish hue then lets say the Borgata. Even if the Borgata $500 chip was not oversized it would be easier to separate from a red stack then the purple chip at Parx.

3 - The chips at Parx just seem to have a ton of colors/patterns. Hence some measures should be taken.

However, overall I am a big fan of PARX. Once the expansion is complete, I see no reason why the room will not fill 60 tables on the weekends. Also, I think the games will even get better once regular players can simply come to the room and not have to wait for 3 hours. Right now, I feel that the long waits are chasing some fish away. While the games are good, I think they will get even better.

Re: PARX Poker Thread

yeah i played 2 sessions of 5/10 there last week

fantastic poker room the best i've played in all around for sure, although i haven't been out west yet, you guys are lucky to have all that great action

yeah the colors there are slightly confusing, and i haven't played at borgata, but at several other casinos i've been to the 500 chips were the same size without issue

There already is more action at Parx on weeknights than there is at the Taj or Borgata. That's impressive.

I guess they won't be spreading 20-40 or 40-80 7 card stud games anytime soon.

As it's been about a month, has anyone already earned any food comps through playing poker? I still haven't seen what I've earned...or it could be my bad card.

Sure, I saw someone getting comps added last night. I think you may have to talk to the desk manager to get them transferred onto your card though.
