Here is a little information that might be helpful for the poker players on this forum that are patiently awaiting the poker room to open at Parx Casino.

The poker room is tenatively scheduled to open on October 1st with 40 tables. It will be on the 1st floor of the Philadelphia Race Park. With Parx's expansion plans next spring the plans are to expand the room to 100 tables. Does it expand from the racepark to the main casino building? Who knows.

I must admit that I'm really excited about this opportunity that I have at this casino. They are expecting great things...

Hope to see you guys down at the casino come October.
I hope this is true.

I hope it's true too. A 40 table to start shows they could be serious. There is a massive pool of poker players w/in a 15 mile radius of PARX. Lot's of train stops for NY players too. And Philly, well... it's probably 10 miles away.

that is all

Anyone notice that Delaware Park has $3/6 LHE as their entry limit game ?
I think this is a great idea, as opposed to spreading 2/4 AND 3/6 (like AC poker rooms do). Several Las Vegas poker rooms have only 3/6 or 4/8 as their lowest limit game.
IMHO, this might be a good option for Parx.

I changed my earlier opinion on spreading 2/4, 4/8, 8/16, 15/30 structures. Players on the East Coast just don't seem to want to play these limits/structures (see Trop & Borgata).

So the limit/stud/omaha games can gain a small foothold, Parx might be better off adopting the same structures that Borgata used in 2003, and similar to what Taj/Borgata/Foxwoods use now. The limits (while not always great structures), will be familiar to the majority of players and will increase the likelihood of the games going.

So, how about this ?

1/2, 2/5, 5/10 NLHE
3/6, 5/10, 10/20, 20/40 LHE
3/6 (no ante), 5/10 ($1 ante) 7CS
5/10 (full kill), 10/20 (half kill) O8

Yah unfortunately 3/6 is their only LHE game. I agree though. I may be a biased mid-limit player, but even when I was a micro/low stakes player the difference between 2/4 and 3/6 was nill.

I don't necessarily agree with this. I live on the east coast, but go to Vegas 4-5 times a year. I regularly play the $15-30 at Bellagio and have sat with a number of folks chatting about how much better $15-30 is then $10-20. I think the reason the Borgata and Foxwoods don't have $15-30 is because they haven't tried to get it. It's not that people prefer $10-20 and $20-40, it's just that it's the only option.

Btw, the reason $15-30 and $30-60 is better is because of the blind structure. The SB is 2/3s of the big blind, which makes for more action. It's a much better game.

I totally understand.
4/8, 8/16, 15/30, 30/60 are better structures than 3/6, 5/10, 10/20, 20/40. My concern is that you can't always teach old dogs new tricks, and a lot of Parx' player pool will be the people familiar with the way Borgata/Taj does things.
The limit games might struggle to go if players aren't familiar with playing those limits.

Also, I still enjoy playing stud but the typical AC structures (1-5 no ante spread, 5/10 .50 ante, 10/20 $1 ante) are terrible. I wouldn't mind seeing a no ante game, but make 2-10 spread or 3/6. 5/10 stud would be OK, but only with a $1 ante.

As far as Omaha 8 goes, I'd be OK with either 5/10 kill (like Taj) & 10/20 half kill (like Borgata), or 4/8 half kill & 8/16 half kill.

as far as tournaments, the harrah's thread mentions that they are already making plans to host a WSOP circuit event in 2011. so i'm guessing they will be running tournaments no later than that.

The Poker Rm @ the MoheganSun, before they closed here in CT. yrs back. Ran a $3/$6 LHE as their lowest LHE game, ( it was great ) When they re-opened the Poker rm two yrs ago, they started with $2/$4 LHE, because thats what Foxwoods has.
Now we can not get anything higher than $4/$8 LHE games @ the SUN????
The old Poker rm had up to $30/$60 running regularly, Now the $4/$8 bearly gets going? Yet FWs has 5/10 with a kill 10/20 20/40 LHE games
So my point is, be very careful starting a low limit holdem game. Once they start, it's hard to Kill them or, get them to move up to better than $4/$8 A roomfull of $2/$4 LHE games is worst than watching Paint DRY, if you want to play LHE
I'm look'n forward to a road trip to Philly to play some LHE $10/$20 & up this Fall..............

Agree. Pre 'poker boom' the most common low stakes games for retirees & degens was the trusty ol' 1-5 stud. Around 2003-2004, 2/4 LHE became the low roller game of choice. I'm pretty sure EVERY room in AC spreads that stupid game. I'm perplexed as to why 2/4 LHE is so popular. It's both boring and unprofitable at the same time. I guess if you just want free drinks it's OK...

3/6 should be the lowest limit game offered in a poker room.
Not that there's a huge difference between 2/4 & 3/6, but it is a little better.
Don't know if it will actually happen @ Harrah's Chester & Parx, but we'll see.

The older people and novices just like to enjoy a nice low limit poker game. Not everyone is there to make a living. Retirees with lots of time on there hands love low limit poker. I play 2/4 occasionally and really love it. Most of the people like to have conversations and don't have any IPODS. I almost always walk away with more than I sat down with. The old folks give off true tells.

that is all

I have played a lot of 2/4 LHE as well. +1 on the old rocks giving off tells. When they voluntarily put money into the pot, it's a fold.

No, but Parx is saying early October.

And some will say "They have not filed with the state so don't trust that date."

That's for the rest of the casino. Some sources are sloppily saying that the July opening includes "..., poker, ..." but this refers only to non-poker house games that use poker hand rankings or whatever.

Does anyone know (facts and rumors both welcome) if the Parx poker room will be non-smoking? It is my understanding that some of the new PA cardrooms might choose to allow smoking within the room, and that might be a deal breaker for me, so I'm curious. I understand that this policy may not have been decided upon yet.

This is odd because it is my understanding that none of the new PA cardrooms will allow smoking. Smoking in poker rooms is bad for business, which is why you almost never see it anywhere.

I can't even think of a room around the country that I have visited that allows smoking. There is like no chance that they will.

I thought I heard that at least one of the new PA rooms was allowing smoking, but I could easily be wrong. I agree that they shouldn't allow smoking, because a poker room is somewhere where everybody has to be able to sit comfortably for many hours.

The 5th floor racebook is smoke free I believe the whole building is.But if they put 1 slot machine in that may change.Allowing smoking is sooo ghetto. If you walk thru the new building your eyes start to burn in like 10 mins.Nothing like the sight of a elderly person with a drink in one hand cigarette in other and a oxygen tank at their side.Parx should put that on their billboards.

There are a lot of limit players within the area of parx... the only thing im concerned with is the limits they will spread. I think the best limits to spread 3-6, 7.50-15, 15-30, 30-60, and 60-120 (throw in some KILL games) to offer limits different than the other east coast casinos... I've been playing at a poker club on frankford ave for a while and they only spread limit games there w a pretty big list of players. It will definitely hurt his business but why play at a club who charges higher time than the casino ($6 for 10-20, $7 for 15-30)?

I agree that that would be a great LHE "ladder." Pink-chip 7.5/15 and redbird 15/30 would both be goood structures and having 3/6 or even 4/8 as the lowest limit strikes me as being a great idea to produce a good pool of continuous fish at the lowest level and not having that lowest level be an enormous jump between 2/4 and 10/20.
