Palm Beach Kennel Club (West Palm Beach, FL)

I'd like to introduce Noah Carbone (2+2 user pokernoahc), the Cardroom Director of Palm Beach Kennel Club, to the community. Please feel free to ask him questions regarding his room in this thread.

I'll get things started by asking the following:

(1) What games and limits do you run currently?

(2) How are you preparing for the legislation changes coming in July?

(3) What new games and limits do you expect to see under the new legislation? Do you have any lists of interest for new games forming yet?

Thanks!

Re: Palm Beach Kennel Club Poker Thread

Do I start at 4? I guess I will

4) are you going to be open the max hours? I ask because I was told that you were not going to do 24 on the weekends.

5) Is there any plans yet for the new location? What part of the county is the first choice?

6) when are you going to start auditions?

not a question, please lose the tux shirts, we are in South Florida dress like it, a Tommy Bahama shirt or something more casual. It is hot down here!!

Thanks for the thread Rapini. I will be more than happy to answer any questions (within reason) in regards to the Palm Beach Kennel Club Poker Room. We are excited for the upcoming changes taking place on July 1st and we are working hard to make the proper changes in order to maintain the momentum that we currently have!!

Please submit any questions on this thread. I will be very active (comparable to Stan at the Borgata).

Ok, here we go:

I'll get things started by asking the following:

(1) What games and limits do you run currently?
We curently offer the following games/limits:
1-2 NL $60-$100
2-5 NL $100
5-10 NL $100

1-3 Stud
1-5 Stud

$2 Limit Hold'em
$2-$4 Limit Hold'em

$3-$5 Omaha/8

We also offer various tournaments with buy-ins ranging from $30 w/rebuys to $550 WSOP Qualifiers and everything in between.

(2) How are you preparing for the legislation changes coming in July?
We are excited about the changes we are making in preparing for the new limits:
-Gathering info from the players in regards to limits/games preferred
-Ordering larger denomination chips
-Making a comfortable upscale area for the larger games
-Training the staff
-Re-addressing the rulebook to ensure that it applies to new limits
-Working with the state on new rules to follow the changes
-Assessing the security of the facility to ensure customer safety

-

(3) What new games and limits do you expect to see under the new legislation? Do you have any lists of interest for new games forming yet?

This is the million dollar question!! We have an idea of what will be spread up to $5-$10 NL. After that, it will be a read and react situation.

Once again, thanks for the thread! I will ensure that I do my best to keep everyone up to date on any changes.

We will be offering the maximum available hours on July 1st. Adjustments may be made at a later date.

5) Is there any plans yet for the new location? What part of the county is the first choice?
This is the most popular question I have received. Preliminary meetings are now taking place in order to find a location for the second facility. A new facility will be completed, I project, within 18 months.

6) when are you going to start auditions?
We are currently assessing our dealer roster in order to see if more dealers are needed for the added hours. After that, I project, that there will be limited hiring for additional staff. If you are interested please fill out at application and stop by and introduce yourself!

I am working on this one. It is an old school mentality that we are trying to get away from. I agree, casual will be better

Where will this room be located, in the downstairs room where the cash games are currently played? Any chance of remodeling the card room anytime soon? The place could use a serious facelift - no offense. I live in the Jupiter area and it's almost worth the drive to go to Pompano for me because the room has such a better feel and I feel like I'm actually getting something for my rake.

Also, speaking of rake, will you guys be eliminating the button blind for the automatic rake now? It's terrible for the game - maybe you've already eliminated it, I've only played tournaments there in the last couple months.

Thanks for any info.

Quick and cheap way to make a higher limit area would be to get 2 large bull nose fish tanks and put them on the column just past the bar, use them as a room divider, it would give about 10 tables privacy in the back. you would be able to see back there but not hover over.

The new area will be located downstairs. We are looking at a long term project for the facility, but we are rather disappointed to be at the disadvantage that we are. Pompano has slots which enables them to provide the facility that they have. Not to use it as an excuse, but this is factual.
We will be working diligently on making our customer service better than that of the larger casinos.

The button blind is being talked about and i would like to discuss this with you if you stop by sometime. There are arguments for the blind, for the winning player.

Next time you are in, stop by the office and say hello. I would be happy to buy you a beer and we can discuss some of the ways we can do better.

Take care.

We actually looked at this area, and I love the idea of tanks. Great way to improve the look of the room.

We are, however, placing the tables in the three card area, railed off.
Higher end furniture will be within this area. We feel that it is good to have a seperate area, but also allow the area to be viewed by the other players also.
So they may feel some of that excitement.

Gambit, if you have any other ideas, please let me know. It is the players room after all!!

Take care.

Role reversal time.

Question for the players:

What is the biggest game that will go regularly?

What is the biggest game that will go at any given time?

I would love to hear opinions on this!

In my opinion it all depends on the buy in structures, if you have a no-cap or 200 BB cap then you may get a 10/20-25 game going on weekends, the 5/10 game will play nightly. The 25/50 game may get going during the winter months one or two nights a week only if it is promoted, you would have to do what they did at the BIKE, high rollers night, players knew they had the big limit game on that night, they play 200/400 limit poker, Jerry Buss was a regular in that game.

But who knows I may be wrong and you may get a 50/100 game going all the time but I don't think it will, only time will tell.

The big games in S Florida will go to who ever is the most prepared for them, but from what I have heard they are not alway worth the problems they create, they always want special attention, free stuff and they really don't bring in any more income. so you will have to judge for yourself to see if you really want the big games, the 5/10 and below are the meat and potatos the rest is just gravy.

Hi Noah,

I live in Orlando, (will be moving to tampa after July) and drive down to Miami for all the Dolphins home games. At this point i anticipate just staying at the hardrock for my visits and playing the big games over there. How far out of my way would the PBKC be, and why should I go there instead of the HR?

poker rooms are like women, nothing wrong with a little variety, . No one ever wants to be tied down to just one.

Pokernoahc, I am glad you have come here to answer questions and take in what the players have to say, ill be visiting down there in late may, and mid June and can not wait to play. But hopefully I can fill you on a couple things

From the all that I have seen, You will have big games in the beg, but that will fall off after a while and it will soon be hard to start up a game 5-10 and higher, Your most popular game will be 1-2, 1-3 or 2-5 by far. I live here in the mid west and the biggest and most popular are 1-3 and 2-5, the 1-3 has a buy in of 100 to 300 and the 2-5 game is 200-500.

The biggest game here at one point was a 5-10-25 PLO game that ran three times a week at the horseshoe in southern Indiana, This game has shrunk to 1-3-5 PLO with a max buy in of 1000.

Sorry for being negative here but thats just the trend I am seeing from about 15 poker rooms accross the midwest.

Bucky,

We are a bit out of the way from Dolphins Staduim. It would be hard to argue that you should come up this way if you are attending a game. However, I think you would be happy with our friendly service. We provide more of a club type feel rather than a large casino feel. We are going to be competitive with our games and limits. We currently have more 5-10 Nl games going on any given day than any room in FL.

Stop by some time after a big Dolphin win!!..

Take care.

LiveAction,

I agree that it will start strong then level off after a year or so.

I do think, however, that our demographic may provide for larger games on a more consistant basis. If you look at a per capita income, the area we are located can compete with anywhere in the U.S.

I take lightly what the players say they can afford play, but we will have to see how it all pans out.

The new limits start July 1st, so you may want to adjust the time for your visit. If I can do anything to help please contact me.

Take care.

Has there been any discussion on max buy-ins the various NL games? Are you considering standard 100BB max on 1/2, 2/5, 5/10 games or larger?

Also, what kind of tournament events will you be offering? With the extended hours, especially 24 hours on weekends, there should be great opportunities for some very good 2-day deep stack events maybe on a monthly basis? Also, any thoughts on weekly tournament schedule or if you will be chaning it up at all, especially Saturday or Sunday events?

We look to maintain a simillar schedule as we do now. We do look forward to some 2 day events on the weekends as well as having larger events for this summer Poker Classic.

Take care.

Do you know when or if the PPKC will get bingo style slots or instant racing machines?

It is a shame that Palm Beach didn't join in with Broward and Dade a few years ago when they voted in Las Vegas style slots.

I agree that your Demo has much more money per square mile than any other county around where Live so you are right about that and believe me I also hope its right. I said earlier that I won't be there till June, but it looks like I could be making a stop down there about once a month for a while to visit a couple of friends. Please keep us updated with any new info, thankyou.

Re: Palm Beach Kennel Club Poker Thread

I visited a Florida Poker Club for the first time this weekend on Saturday night for about 2 hours. I was in Boynton Beach near West Palm Beach celebrating mothers day. I arrived at the Palm Beach Kennel Club at about 9:15PM and paid $1 for parking and $1 admission for the Dog Races. Happened to see a race too.

The Poker Room is not large in size but sure fits in lots of tables for the relative small size. There is a bar service and massage girls plus the Dog Racing Gambling option so there is plenty of activity. There was a waiting list for the 1/2 game but when I walked around found an empty seat and was invited to sit by the dealer. As you know the maximum buy in for any game is $100 so that was my starting stack. One difference with most games, here you also post a $2 blind on the button in addition to the standard SB and BB.

I could see the quality of play was generally passive weak. After a few minutes I was dealt AKo in fairly early position and raised to $15, One other guy called, but a third guy raised to $45. Since I only had about $85 left in front of me, I decided to go all in even though I was pretty sure I was slightly behind. Fortunes were with me and I spiked an Ace and King and doubled up.

After my double up, I did win a few modest hands after that with some premium hands, even flopping a set of kings once. But the rake is steep at $5 with another $1 for the bad beat. Also, I discovered how bad the rake is in one hand where only the three blinds including me were in the hand. It was checked down the entire way. I should have been given $6 but they raked $2 from the pot which is absurd.

Overall it was a nice visit and I would return again but only because the state has approved an uncapped game rule (clubs will probably set higher standard caps) effective July 1. Even though the rake is high, I expect there will be a learning curve for the deeper stack games.
