Was bored on Saturday and didn't feel like driving to HR, so went up around 8 pm. Room was pretty full, had 8 on a list for 2/5 and they opened a new table. Room seemed basically full. Didn't see if anything was going on in the back room. (Also, a hot chick at the brush stand, which never hurts.) Temp seemed fine to me, for a change. Chairs still suck, but at least they have some more cushions laying around. Tables looked somewhat clean(er).
I glanced at the promo board and it looks like they have lowered them. Some were 50 and some 150, but they are not doing the 599/299 thing anymore looks like, or at least not that day. They had some "jackpot" thing noted, but have no idea what that was. Some sort of bad beat?
Play was still terrible. Had 2 other players at the table who had a clue, remainder were donating. A couple of short stacks rebuying for 200 at a time, but was nice to see that all the others had full stacks. The 600 buy in is nice. You'll still die a death by 1,000 cuts if you get sloppy and start calling raises with dominated cards, because you can't pry someone off top pair with a crowbar. I think I saw one true bluff in 4 hours.
Dealers kept the game going fairly well. 1 new face I hadn't seen before, rest were the old guard. Interesting (unintentionally funny) situation was one time when someone came across with a stack of $65 looking like he intended to call the $40 bet, but then the dealer took about a minute to make him raise even though the guy said he didn't intend to (dealer looked like he didn't want to upset him). Of course, I had watched the player look at the original bet as action was coming around to him, count out 40, then add 25 on top. I guess that's what passes for semi-angle shooting in SRQ. (Of course, first bettor raised, second guy shoves with the nuts.)
If you have the patience to just play tight, you can do well. I walked around and watched a few other tables. Other 2/5 tables looked about like mine. The 1/2 looks hilarious. (People calling raises to 30 pre.)
I might give the room a shot more regularly again, although we'll have to see how it looks when summer hits.
I was in there for ten hours about a month ago playing 2/5. It is true you cannot put most of these folks off top pair. It takes a bit of getting used to, people calling pot sized bets on the end with top pair/crappy kicker.
On the other hand, well...you know. If they don't spike, you can make some nice scores.
By the way, that is a definitive angle shoot. Nothing semi about it. But it's our job to assess the likelihood they are angling, right?
As for the 1/2 playing "hilarious" with the $30 calls preflop, I agree, it is nothing I grew up playing. But in the past five years, this is a pretty common thing I see, and it is not always due to people playing poorly. Sometimes it is just the product of there being no bigger game going and it just starts playing that way. When there are a couple of decent players around and it's playing like this, I just think of it almost like a straddle.
That said, yeah, they mostly suck.
