Perhaps I'm at the Oaks too often, but I thought this was standard everywhere. It's disgusting to eat finger food while playing poker, so using chopsticks is an awesome solution.

Well, this was five years ago. I guess it caught on!

I love it when people assume that I don't screw around when I'm eating. People used to joke about my "turkey sandwich specials" - the absurd number of premium hands that I'm dealt in late position while eating.

Chef's salad is fine. Grilled turkey & cheese is good. Tri tip sandwich is very good. Friday's salmon special is excellent.

If you're going to walk that far, Doyle Street Cafe is in play, as is Townhouse. Arizmendi is probably a more reasonable alternative.

Um, you know there's a decent number of friendly SS/uS people in the area who would love to meet up with you, right?

I eat Cheetos with chopsticks and nobody makes fun of me.

Well, not for eating Cheetos with chopsticks, anyway.

Neither time did I have enough notice that I would be going to the card club to put out an alert. But I may be up again in early July and I'll post in the micros NC thread if I do.

Doyle Street and Arizmendi are OK, but they aren't usually open when I'm at Oaks (in the evening). Townhouse is over-priced and mediocre, IMO.

Honor Bar is fairly new -- if you haven't been there, check it out.
It's in the old Sushi Village red building, easy to miss. The food is very well done. They have a great burger, rib sliders, carnitas, fried chicken, and other stuff all for around $9-$11. They also have awesome handcut, twice-fried french fries served with three dipping sauces.

I'm thinking of coming up to the oaks to play 15/30 or 30/60 LHE or maybe 4/8 stud on Friday morning. Is there anything I can/should do to make sure I don't have to wait long for a seat?

I think for 15/30 and 30/60, you can call ahead to put your name on the list.

The 30/60 game only runs at certain times though.

That's right; you can call ahead to get your name on the 15-30 and 30-60 lists and they will keep them there for an hour.

EXCEPT on Tuesdays and Fridays for the 30-60, they let you sign up for the game for a week in advance, and there's a fixed noon starting time. (Unless the game runs continuously since the previous night, in which case the advanced signup list gets tossed out.)

IMHO, 4-8 stud is not worth the effort; the drop is too big and it's structured badly ($0.50 ante, $1 bring-in, $4 drop on fourth street). I've told management many times that with a fixed fourth-street drop so large, the antes should be $1. They've told me they don't want the bad players to go broke quickly.

I tried the tri tip sandwich, and it was decent -- I think I should have gotten the white bread instead of the sweet roll though. Will try again.

This is an awesome thread on The Oaks. Too bad it is so hidden. I only just came across it today.

I try to get to the Oaks once a week.

Thanks guys. I'll be there in the Friday 30/60 game eating tri-tip w/ mashed potatoes.

Yeah. Why isn't this thread in Poker Venue? I don't think Rapini rules over Poker Venue very hard if at all.

I haven't read the micros NC thread in a few months.

PM me if you're ever planning another trip. Short notice is short notice, or I'll PM you my phone number.

To the Oaks regulars: There is a prop that plays the 15 and 30 games, I think he said evening or night shift. He is an older white gentleman (60 maybe?), very friendly, maybe bald hair on the sides and back (can't remember).

Not sure if that narrows it down or not. Anyways I played with him in a Commerce Stud game about a 16 months ago when the Oaks was shut down for a couple of days. I haven't played a ton of Stud but a fair amount including WSOP events, but he was damn tough. I told my friend he either the best Stud player in the world or he was running sizzling hot. I'm sure he was probably running good, but I'd still lean towards him being really, really good. He was playing fast as hell and punishing everyone. I have never seen anything like it playing Stud before or afterwards.

I was wondering if he is as tough/good at holdem as he is Stud just out of curiosity. He gave me hope that poker skills don't necessarily diminish with age.

There is a very good holdem player there who more or less fits that description, except he has a bit of hair. Wears glasses, tall guy, baseball aficionado. (I don't think I'm supposed to use his name, right?) And yes, he is very good at holdem.

There's also another prop there who sort of fits that description, but he's shorter, and I don't think he's quite as good, as nearly as I can tell.

Honestly I can't remember all the details of what he looked like. Just saw this thread and it reminded me of him. Was hoping that there was only one prop who would be close. He might of had hair. I think he was in good shape for his age but I could be wrong. Seemed to be super sharp mentally. I may even be adding a few years to his age now that I think about it.

I wouldn't remember his name. Anyways I enjoyed getting my ass handed to me by him about as much as is possible under the circumstances. I've played with a few players that are suppose to be world class at Stud and his table presence trumped them all imo.

The Oaks, starting yesterday, now has a vietnamese menu. Six new items. The menu is blinding red so don't stare at it for too long.

It only runs for certain days and hours though -- which, I cannot remember ATM.

I looked at it, but lacked the the courage (or had the wisdom not) to order anything off it. I have yet to be impressed with the food offerings there.

Nonetheless, last night I was at two of the juiciest tables I've ever seen -- one at 15/30, which broke after only an hour unfortunately. Went home with nearly five racks.

That 15/30 was juicy all day, but after someone stole a 32BB pot with rivered magic two-pair, half the table went on tilt and it played like a 3/6 table.
