To kick off, I wanted to discuss the on-going debate among North-eastern Jersey residents.
As I have been able to visit Bethlehem Sands, and their poker room is continuously expanding, is the 45 minute's saved worth it, as opposed to driving to AC?
NY City residents are in the same situation. 1.5 hours to Sands, or 2.25 hours to the Borgata/AC?

We let the driver make the choice, and im always heading to Sands (prolly cause luck has steered me there)!

Unless you are looking for higher LHE games like 10-20+, tournament variety or a more diverse entertainment experience beyond poker there is no reason to head to AC. The majority of Northern NJ is 60-90 minutes from Sands/PARX as opposed to 2+ hrs to AC.

im in nyc and the ~30 mins more to AC for me as opposed to parx or sands (havent been there) is worth it because of the comps + rooms at AC.

^Midas nailed it on the head! When we are heading out to play mixture of games, mostly plo, we head to AC. But when we just want to grind 2/5 1/2 nlhe for a cpl of hours, than Sands/Parx seems adequate.
AC def is more wife/kids friendly if you are looking for an overnight/weekend/entertainment value.
But I was looking more towards discussing softness +ev of play!

pa casinos has this hands down over the borgata in AC. I do like to go to the B on occasion just to test my skill against a tougher opponent.

+1

Sands feels like a softer game than most AC casinos. But, I really like to play tournaments, so I have to keep trekking to AC when that urge strikes.

I thought about playing the Mount Airy tournament, but I keep hearing bad things about how its run and how the poker room in general is run.

If Sands ever gets tournaments, then I'll be very happy.

From where I live in NJ, just over 1 hour to sands, 2 hours to AC. For day trips, that's a HUGE difference. I like the Sands, but my preference is Borgata, so I try to get down to AC for at least one weekend a month. If I have a room it's worth the extra hour drive, for day trips, definitely Sands. Parx is about 1.5 hours, maybe a little less, it does not fit well into either categories, I rarely go there. And I have not heard anything promising about Mt. Airy to make it worth the drive time there either (I think closer to 1.5 hours).

Reading the Mount Airy thread, I agree it doesn't seem like a decent place to play, and a friend of mine played there and confirmed most of what people said in the thread.

It's too bad because I was hoping to play their tourny until Sands starts theirs.

Though I've recently moved from Northeast NJ, I would like to add my .02 to this topic.

Having lived <10 minutes to I-287 on the border of Bergen and Passaic County, I had Mount Airy roughly 60-70 minutes away, Sands about 75 minutes away, and AC about 2 hrs away from my house. If I had the urge to play hookie from work for a day and take a trip to a casino, the extra hour saved by going to Mt Airy or Sands helped a lot, as dela has already said. If I was to take an extended trip (overnight, multiple nights), I would definitely choose AC for the shops, restaurants, hotel amenities, number of available games.

I have been to sands a couple of times over the last several months, but not to AC since Feb. I really want to see the impact on AC lately cause I'm heading to the Borg next weekend. My real downside of Sands is that it really only gets busy at night/weekends. So there are times when u have to wait a cpl of hours for a seat to open up.

Has anyone played at the Wayne PAL tourney lately? I played several months back, and it had about 60 players. A year ago, it would have 100+ on average. Just wondering if i just hit an off week, or the trend has been slowing down lately with the opening of the Sands/Parx/Mt Airy.

Anybody been down to check out the Borgata Open yet?
Heading down Sat for a bachelor party. The festivities are prolly gonna keep me from playing any extended tournament, but I'm sure the Poker Room will be overflowing.

never been , but looked it up. Seems pretty solid if they can get close to 100 people. Was thinking about it, I think it's this friday. Or I'll just go to sands on saturday. We'll see, maybe I'll drive by to see the numbers.

What are the details as far as rake goes for this Wayne PAL Tourney? IIRC charity events like this have close to 50% rake?
Northeast NJ Quote
09-20-2011 , 12:46 PM
Not exactly 50% but I think a good 25%. It's more a matter of being able to find a $100 buy in tournament that has more than the regular 10-30 regulars attending. Every $100 charity event I have attended lately is only able to get 20-30 participants. Wayne is an established monthly event that has been running strong for several years. Might not be the most +EV, but sometimes availabilty is a major factor.

Mods: can we discuss upcoming charity events in this thread? I know we are told in HG that only hosts should promote/post, but if we we're invited to a charity event, can we post about it here?
