Hey All,
I am making a trip for a wedding in central N.Dakota next month and was wondering if anyone has played poker out there. We will probably stay at Spirit Lake Casino on Devils Lake so has anyone played there, and if so what is offered? Anyone played at Dakota Magic or Sky Dancer poker rooms at all?
Thanks for any info

I was in Dickinson last year and went to Four Bears to play in an NLH tournament one day. It was meh....not a ton of players and there were no NLH Cash games afterwards. My experience was dealers and locals tend to stick together. Not real surprising since there probably aren't a lot of tourists up there. Best part of going there was the trip took me through the Badlands, unbelievably gorgeous. GL

Thanks for the report. I won't be making it that far west and am primarily looking for any info on Spirit Lake Casino on Devils Lake. Anyone else ever play poker or stay there have any info? I can't believe nobody else on 2+2 has ever played poker in N. Dakota!

Well, I played poker in the Turtle Mountain casino near Belcourt, ND., but it was in 1989 roughly. The main game was 25 cent to one dollar spread limit stud/8.

I was in Rugby for a wedding, and the drive wasn't too bad. Don't know if that is now the Sky Dancer, but there can't be too many casinos in that sparsely populated state.

LOL! Dakota Magic had a tournament series back in maybe 2004? At that time, they had a 5-20 spread limit, dealer's choice (either o/8 or hold'em) game. Haven't been back in a loooong time, so who knows what's up now . . .

This is making me feel old!

Update: Don't bother to play at Spirit Lake in ND.
Only one 5/20 spread O8 game going there this weekend and they said they rarely ever get any holdem games going other than tournies.
Also the road into and out of there is a joke and can tear up your car or leave you with a dinged winshield which is what happened to me.

Make sure you have lodging arranged as the oil boom has brought many there to work and not much lodging available !!!!

I am bumping this because I have been googling around about poker in ND and it seems there are severe restrictions on poker there. Specifically, poker is only offered on the tribal reservations and there are limits on how much can be bet in one hand, and the number of betting rounds (3) per each hand.

Is this right? Can poker be found in cities or is it just on reservations? Is holdem played and if so, are only 3 betting round allowed?

Thanks

You can only find poker on the reservations. Not ideal by any means.
I do know the Skydancer (Belcourt) has betting limits after 3 betting rounds. Most in ND are this way.

Hope that helps.

Thanks,
so betting (in holdem) can be nl through the turn, but limit on the river?

Also, I thought this was going to show up in the standard b&m forum.

Dakota Magic on the North Dakota/South Dakota Border has a decent 2-10 full kill omaha8 + hold em dealers choice game. If a pot goes over $100 and it isn't split then the next hand is 4-20 spread and kill button(winner from hand) automatically puts in $4. Lot's of old timer farmers. 2 or 3 people on the table are usually spewing.

New 2+2 lurker, in Western ND Dickinson. Looking to get some home games going out this way and somewhere decent to play. Heard 4 bears tournaments is horrible and not worth the drive for a small pot/buy-in. Roughrider poker tour is the best I see atm.
Plus free bump

I just moved to Dickinson ND from St. Paul MN. I am also wondering if there are any cardrooms in the area or home games going on around town that I can get into. Are there any cardrooms within an hour of the area that may be worth looking into?

There is not much in the way of constant action up there as I understand, just these low spread limit mixed games that come and go. You will probably have to drive to Deadwood, SD to find games which is probably 2.5-3 hours away.

It looks like there is a bar in Glendive, MT called Oasis Bar & Casino which is 1.5 hours from you that has one poker table. There is conflicting info on the internet so who knows, you should call them to see what is up.

Montana has weird poker rules. The pot cannot get above $300, once it does the action stops and everyone is all in. The poker tables are typically in the middle of the floor in bars as poker is legal anywhere alcohol is served.

Has the oil money in ND changed anything in the way of poker as described above?

I made a couple of phone calls and the stakes are ok(2&5 blinds/w $800.00 pot cap STATE LAW) with dishwashers making $15-$17 an hr and ESCORTS getting $300.00 an hr. (look at Backpage.com for ND) There seems to be money to be made. If I go it will be spring and summer as SUB ZERO in a travel trailer is a NO-GO. I will ask about rake and comps on next call.I played in Florida when they had that awful $100 pot cap but $800 is different- Just called STATE LINE and spoke to MIKE - FREE BOOZE! 1 meal a day m-sat/sun you get 2,after 2 weeks of 3 visits per week $1 per hr RAKEBACK! NO BAD BEAT DROP 10% MAX UPTO $5 -That is it- $400.00 max buy in too.

Is there anywhere to play NLHE near Fargo?

I've played at Dakota Magic but all they spread was 2-10 dealer's choice.

I was once told that Fargo had charitable gaming rooms but I can't find anything online about them.

I've never heard of a charitable poker room in Fargo. The pull tabs and blackjack in all the bars are all charitable gaming though, so maybe that's what was being referenced.

You may find the occasional charity NL tournament, but there isn't anywhere in the area that I'm aware of with a NL cash game.

Thanks. Entirely possible the person who told me assumed there would be poker since they had charitable gaming.

I did find one place that claimed poker on their website but didn't actually have it.

No big, I bought a ton of cheap smokes and played online in my hotel room.
