It's disgusting. Not only does it make win rates not worth your time you are incentivized to be a nit because of the huge rake, which I'm sure makes the experience mega tilting, especially if you're used to playing multiple tables online. At least at CN the timed rake is reasonable and incentivizes you to NOT be a nit.

Yup.

Professional poker players should quit and get a job.

No money to be made here.

Doesn't CN close from 4 am to noon? Just checked bravo three 1/3 tables and a growing list for 2/5. Not that grinding 2/5 live full time with no backup plan is a great idea in 2023, especially in this economy.

Niagara is a shell of its former self unfortunately and it's still by far the best poker room in Ontario. Sad to see such a fall from grace. All because Toronto fish are now going to the Woodbine casino.

I would never live in Ontario if you're a serious professional grinder, maybe look to Montreal/Vancouver/Calgary/Edmonton... but even those options have massive cons. It's probably a rough time to be a grinder, rake increases everywhere you go in Canada.

From what I hear, Vancouver's live poker scene is horrible. Which is surprising cause I thought it would be like the LA of Canada in terms of poker due to cost of living and high barrier to entry for any aspiring live pros. Playground in Montreal has $16+2 rake at 2/5 although it's 5%. Live poker in Canada just seems like dog **** overall. Maybe Alberta has some decent action? Anywhere in the US is way better but good luck convincing the US to let you move there to be a live pro.

Woodbine electronic tables were the best in poker. 5 dollar rake, no dealer tipping, and twice as many hands dealt. Was easily the best way to play live PLO as well. A total shame everyone bitched, cried, and called them rigged and preferred actual cards and chips.

Tourist don't generally visit Niagara Falls this time of the year less New Years. I recall s downtown Niagara Falls Ontario and it's a ghost town on a weekday in mid January and not much better on the weekends so the tourist fish type won't be around until the spring. Also losing most Toronto fish is terrible for the liquidity of the games too. I could see some in the spring if they hit the strip clubs or something like that.

Also Buffalo fish that don't want to play at Turning Stone or in an underground game will be on these tables.

They totally were! And you could buy in for $300 at 1/2 which was nice. I remember playing 1/2 there with Tariq back in the day and he went on to be a RIO coach.

I played the last couple years before it shut down; I don't recall if I ever played with him. I made heaps playing 1/2NL there and moved to 2/5 in the last few months, but I absolutely crushed the PLO when I got it to run. I was heartbroken when they shut it down, and now there is a 20-dollar rake in the new live room, which is just disgusting. We lose DFS, we lose global online poker, and we get raped with rake in the new live room.

I wouldn't see the point if you want to play the only legal game in the vicinity. If you cross the border you will have to get interviewed regularly and one slip up with evasive answers and you will be black listed. You also will have to deal with higher fuel costs and wear and tear on your vehicle. If Seneca Niagara ever restarts their games that would be another story but that isn't happening as it would have happened a good year plus ago.

True but border guards have got to hate poker players. I remember hearing about this guy who told the border guard he wanted to go to the US to grind poker and got denied. Before my poker road trip back in the day, I remember being interrogated hard and I told them I was planning to sight see and gamble (I didn't say play poker in case they would've correctly assumed I was planning to play for profit). Even one time when I flew to Vegas to play poker for just a few weeks they detained me, grilled me and almost made me miss my flight. It was during winter so unfortunately I couldn't use the WSOP as an excuse to be there for more than a normal length vacation.

In the summer of 2018 I got a new car, and roughly a week after I went on a road trip from Toronto to Scranton, PA for a baseball trip. (I had recently quit my job at this point and told them poker was my job)

I went through the Rainbow Bridge / Niagara Falls border crossing told them my story, they didnt believe a single word of it apparently, since who drives nearly 12 hours for a minor league baseball trip in a new car. (Yes im crazy)

I end up spending nearly an hour at the inspection office while they check / inspect my car. Eventually they let me go and my car is in worse condition in which I left it as they thought I was a drug mule LOL

If you had recently quit your job probably woulda been better to just say you're in between jobs and taking some time for yourself hence the trip.

That kind of rake is easily beatable with the right lineup. I don't know much of anything about these games here, but generally speaking peeps tend to overestimate the rake and underestimate what kind of game they sit in and how much impact that has. In a nitty game 10% capped at 5 can be unbeatable over the long run, in a good game 10% uncapped can be beatable.

Could Casino Niagara get a fish boom tomorrow chasing the Eclipse?

I don't think the demographics of eclipse chasers is similar to losing fish but you never know....
