Puckster: I've read through this thread and I'm excited for your new venture. I think that you have a great opportunity to land the majority of the poker business in the area. I just wanted to throw out a few items that would be on my "wish list" for a poker room. Call me picky, but I figure you want all the input from all of your potential customers and I would be one. The two items I would love to see (on top of a nice quality room) would be: (1) quality poker chips; and (2) modiano bridge size 2 index cards.

Quality poker chips are obviously a large expense, but if you're already ordering custom chips you might as well spend a little extra to get a good quality chip.

As for the modiano bridge size 2 index cards, which is what they use at the WSOP, this is an absolute must. I hate nothing more than a wide jumbo index card with the huge pips. Squeezing out a hand is less exciting and most importantly, you have to lift your cards higher to see your hand. Therefore, the jumbo cards make it hard to conceal your hand. The only card rooms that I have been to that use jumbo index cards are NH poker rooms. I don't why these rooms use them, but they are an inferior product and not the norm. No reputable poker room should ever use a wide jumbo index card.

Just my .02. Good luck with the room.

The Poker guys will handle this, but my thoughts are...

Regarding chips..... We are planning on good quality chips which can be WASHED and sanitized....... nothing worse than dirty chips;

so far as cards go...... I hear you, but am not deeply educated in actual "cards" the poker people will be deciding this.

??? I thought I read that WSOP just changed cards this year for the first time?

Thank you for your input..

While old men prefer big cards they slow down dealers as they cant be pitched as fast- thus reduce your profit.

Great thought didn't even think of that. Absolute must! Clean chips for all.

I hope the poker guys seriously consider using normal cards like Foxwoods, Mohegan and every other good room.

Can't wait to see the finished product.

Guess you weren't around 8-10 years ago, the year they tried out these Lulu's:

Was an absolute **** show. A lot of huge pots were decided, in tournies and cash games, by folks misreading 9's and 6's on the board. The players howled. IIRC, they immediately ordered regular cards to replace, but were forced to use these for several days until replacements arrived.

1. They're talking font size, not card size.

2. I've pitched both, don't think there's any difference...if there is, it is insignificant.

3. Folks seem to think pitch speed has a huge effect on game speed. I'm not sure I'd have it in my top ten. You'd have to be REALLY, REALLY slow on the pitch for this to be a factor, so slow you never should have made it past the audition...

4. Then again, this is NH we're talking about.

Ditto.
As a player who just returned from another XC drive, I wholeheartedly agree. They're average at best, which is OK. At least a ton better than Twin Riv. They are awful. Especially the one that looks like a lumberjack. Half-brain. We got into it, over a pre-m burn/turn....he said to me, easy sir, I got this, when he obviously didn't have this. He called the floor after I said "don't say another word to me"........a clown. No names sorry, I know the rules.

Best dealers: 1. LV, 2. SoCal. 3. Reno 4. AC 5. other metro Cal areas, Sacramento, Bay Area, SD, Inland empire.
Getting better: pockets of ability and professionalism at bigger FL rooms, Pompano, Hollywood.
What I've noticed: rooms that have TV final tables and events, have gotten more professional in the dealer population. Obviously, the best dealers are your "TV dealers". When you see one take a down at your table, its quite a relief. WSOP, Bellagio, Borgata, The Bike and Commerce, yeah they are everyday dealers. And they seem to rub off on a lot of their comrades after a while. But a lot of rooms have benefited from better dealmanship since getting televised; Thunder Valley, Winstar, various Ameristars, Daytona, ....

Old people play poker.

Old people do not internet.

From what I hear, you'd be surprised how cheap ad spots are on TV and radio. One of Howard Stern's flunkies recently did a bit about running for office once when he was young. He made a commercial with a home video camera in one take, and the local cable company only charged him $5 each time they ran it. Sure, he had to buy many spots to get that rate...but five bucks per spot? I'd wager they'd be happy to slap your ad up during their many hours of poker programming.

...and I bet radio is even cheaper. You don't need to be on WEEI (tho I would certainly include them on my list when it's time to shop around). Old folks don't have Spotify in their cars, they are AM/FM till the day they die. Back in my day, when the casino I worked for used us sports book guys to do a lot of radio appearances to promote the property, radio stations provided a LOT to businesses to get them to advertise. They'd let you use their studios to record the spot, they'd provide a producer/technician to make that happen, their sales guys would help with your script...they might even throw in a deep-voiced announcer.

Man, running this business for you sure looks easy from my couch. I'm kind of insulted that I haven't been offered the job yet.

To be clear, I've never run anything in my life, and by no means should I be given the keys to your joint...but since talk is cheap, let me leave you with the words of a man I greatly respect, who HAS owned/operated many successful businesses:

Early to bed
Early to rise...

...Work like hell
And
advertise!

Between Facebook Groups, Twitter and the "Word of Mouth" that generates I can't foresee getting the word out on this new Poker Venue to be that much of a challenge.

The best advertising would also be the easiest. Most of your target audience is from the Rock. Pay the Rock to put a big sign up now for the rest of the month in their poker room.

I am suggesting normal bridge size cards w/ small face are 100000% better than wide cards with big face.

As for your last comment. I've played in many poker rooms (Foxwoods, Mohegan, Rock, Hampton Falls, Seabrook,Turning Stone, Bellagio, MGM, Wynn, Flamingo, Monte Carlo, Caesers, Rio (regular and WSOP), Horseshoe Indiana, Harrah's New Orleans Seminole Casino Ft. Lauderdale, and Atlantis (PCA). I've never played in any room in California, Atlantic City or Reno so maybe I haven't seen the full spectrum, but I really like Foxwoods and it's def in my top 3 if not my favorite room to play in. Sure they could improve in many areas, but it's still a great room and nothing to laugh at.

In fairness, B&M is no longer cluttered with threads about bizarre rules/rulings/service problems at FW, the way it once was.
