Big news in NH is bad beat hit for $291,000 at Hampton. I'm not sure where I stand quite yet on BB and those promotions..... I did think if was very exciting. Really wish some of the younger guys playing there hit it rather than the ones that did. The tip left has produced lots of talk around town. Prob a no win situation

I was not there, do not have first hand info, and not much of a gossip person.... Tipping is always a subjective issue and has been debated forever...

Quick stop off in the office Monday morning.....here is the information release I put out last week:

Announcing………

The Cheers Casino & Poker Room
Located in Salem NH.

Greetings friends and associates,

After working too hard to keep this quite the last month, we have decided to break the news to the general public.

For those of you that do not know me, I am a real estate developer building residential and commercial properties as well as doing major renovations for the past 34 years. For over a year now, my family and I have been pursuing land in Salem New Hampshire for the purpose of building a casino and poker room in accordance with current NH gaming laws. We have had a parcel of land under contract for well over 6 months and our plan was to get something built within 2 years.

These plans with the sudden sale and pending demolition of Rockingham Park.
We now have a large existing property under our control and are in the permit process to open the “Cheers Casino & Poker Room.” We are almost 60 days into the process and plan/hope to open our doors by October 15. Permitting is always delays, and the process in Salem NH is quite extensive.

As a developer and planner for more than 30 years, I understand the municipal permitting process and have a good feel for what communities will approve and what they will reject. Salem NH is a dynamic community with very qualified and very smart government leaders. I have been working with them getting a feel and understanding of the community and the specific permitting process.

We were offered the former Coke plant space and turned it down. After extensive review and consultations, along with our professional planning experience, we concluded that property was not likely going to get a permit from the town; and if we were successful there, it was going to be a long and bloody fight, not to mention expensive.

Instead, we focused our search on a property that we would be the sole occupant, and a property where we were not sharing space and facilities with. A property that had sufficient parking and a property that was large enough to assemble a great casino and poker facility. The property is located near the MA line. Good permitting involves communication with your neighbors. Until we speak face to face with an abutting property owner (who is out of the country) I am keeping the exact address private.
We have been consulting with a handful of the best floor managers and the best players along the way for all types of advice.

The room will be modern and new. New bathrooms, new kitchen, new equipment.

Poker related: We are planning 30 tables. Cash tables will have auto shufflers, USB charging ports, and built in cup holders. We will have card scanners on the cash tables and the table games.

We are interviewing General Managers and plan to hire a person to run the room. The General Manager and I will interview floor staff. The GM and floor staff will hire all the dealers. The GM and floor staff will be in charge of running the room.
The players: I intend to have several committees that the players will be involved in. From MTT play, to cash game play, to general feel and ideas for the room. I also will have an appeal board that will hear very specific issues involving a hand and how it was paid out.

While we are open to questions, we are early in the process and need to keep much off the internet.

Finally, one of our goals will be to form a coalition of rooms to improve the rules and regulations for all the rooms in the state. We will be stronger and better working together….

We are excited for this new room and we are equally excited to be a part of the charity community. Our family is very involved in charity and having the opportunity to assist so many different charities is very exciting for us.

My vision is a newer, more modern version of the Borgata Room…. With much better TV viewing…

I look forward to your feedback

Dan D

This is not legal advice and not given on the basis of any actual or implied attorney client relationship, but speaking as someone who's well versed in this area I'd strongly recommend looking into a different word than "Cheers" to be part of your name, especially now before you do signage web-sites and the like. Otherwise, given that name in general, and its ties to New England in particular, not to mention the type of place you'll be operating, you might get a nasty letter in the mail.

I'm not well versed in that area, and that was my first thought as well...but I let him convince me he knows what he's doing. Again, I'm rooting for him.

Coke plant would have been a lousy location.

Actually, compared to Rockingham, I guess any location is going to feel inferior, but that can't be helped.

Hampton Falls faced the same challenge when compared to Seabrook's roadside location, and they were quick to point out, "It's the same exit! You just turn right off the ramp instead of left, and drive an extra, what? Two minutes? To sit in a first class room instead of a dump?"

Obv, you'll have a little tougher sell than that, but it's still very sell-able...esp if you have the only game in town.

I'm guessing Puckster's lawyers have done their trademark homework and the domain is different so there's no infringement. Hard to believe anyone in NE wouldn't know "Cheers" is a brand.

While we are pretty experienced, and step on all the bases in every process, everyone misses something along the way; especially the most expensive lawyers money can buy.

I appreciate all constructive feedback and advice, it keeps us sharp and on our game. Thank you everyone

Do yourself a favor and google: trademark infringement likelihood of confusion. In a nutshell, the factors which would make "Cheers" such a good name are precisely what could make it more risky to use.

But hey - in the end it's Puckster's call, and glad to hear he's apparently got lawyers involved. I won't say anything more about it.

I'm proud of you for listening!!!! I know from being in the hockey community as well you can tend to be a hard head JK JK. I truly truly wish you the best and will be one of your rooms biggest fan boys.

Fyi: Anyone that doesn't know Puckster I can assure you he is a hard working, honest, well respected, stand up guy... and you can take that to the bank. Now knowing who he is in the real world I will 100% vouch that the Salem poker scene is in great hands. How can we not be excited knowing that the flippin' dump known as the Rock will not only justifiably be gassed but its replacement will be a clean, modern, player friendly room that will be run by a top notch guy. Now lets get the effin' cards in the air!!!

Yes, this is another endorsement for Puckster, now that I know the identity of the man who has been posting.

I'm not disagreeing, I've done a reasonable amount of Patent & Trademark research in my working life, but not for over 20 years. My assumption was his lawyers had already investigated how closely related the domain of one was to the other.

I realize you were probably typing this in a hurry, and I think it wasn't intended as an actual press release, but in any case, please make sure you have an editor review your press releases.

Sorry for nitting it up here; I really want to see you succeed. A good press release can be key to that.

Question : do you see your room as competing with the Wynn as far as the north shore of Boston? How do you think this will effect your bottom line when both rooms are open?

I do not see our room competing with Wynn or any other room. We will build a great room with all the goodies, work hard to earn business, and keep our customers happy and feeling satisfied.

I think when the Wynn room opens (9 miles from my residence) there is going to be a multi-year rush of players from the Boston area that are going to pack the room similar to WSOP in vegas.

I foresee endless waiting lines for several years; my understanding is the room will be 28 tables.

I think the games are going to be great, but its going to be very hard to consistently get in them....

*** Love Wynn and excited to have them in MA
