Well, I guess this settles it.
More than 10-12 casinos in Boston wouldn't be a very good idea.....
Seriously, the anti's will read whatever they want into this, but comparing AC's situation to Boston's is really silly.

Only a few months before we find out who it's gonna be. Can't wait for the shovels to hit the ground here in Boston like they already have at Plainridge. I really want Revere to get it but there is an insane amount of construction happening over by the Wynn site. Not sure if that's a hint.

You mean IF it passes. Otherwise, no casinos anywhere in the state. Has
anyone seen any recent polls on the upcoming November vote ?

Anti's still trailing narrowly, but major ad campaigns haven't started yet.

Just a guess, but I would think that the pro-casino folks would outspend the anti's. At least I hope so.

The thing is, when they were looking for a home for the slot parlors the anti's were much more vocal than the pro-casino folks. Could be that the "pro-casino" voters don't really care either way, but the anti's do.

What a sad, sad, true, sad commentary on the state of modern democracy.

The pro casino group now has it's campaign up and running. We should start seeing ads very soon and hopefully it's not even close. My area needs these jobs/revenue and I need a closer poker room to play in!

it was interesting to me that MGM and Mohegan are part of the pro-casino group for the election, but not Wynn (unless I misread)

Mohegan is not part of the group. MGM and Penn National are at this time.

I hope the Casino industry and Pro Casino people don't under estimate the possibility of a Casino Repeal.

About time to ramp up the fight, isn't it ?

65 Days till the Vote on November 4th.

@Zen...and everyone else back home: The one good thing that election experts will say, universally, is that if someone's mind is made up by Labor Day, they will not change. The NYTimes article says pro-casino sentiment is 50%, with 8-10% undecided. So....the advertising is toward the 10% undecided, and you only need to sway 2 out of every ten of them.
I'm not saying its in the bag- People have long histories of blowing big leads (think Scott Brown over Coakley, and her resistance to campaign outside the Bruins game at Fenway), but for keeping the casinos, it looks pretty good. My old hometown, Leominster, OK'ed the slots parlor bid nearly 60/40.
Hang in there, and lets hope the voters remain sensible.

The majority of people I speak to are in favor of casinos. The Repeal group is very active and much more motivated, but the casual voter who is not following the issue closely are going to support the casinos. Since this is a governor and us rep election, it's going to have decent turnout and casinos will be saved. If they got a special election, they may have had a chance, but with a decent turnout it's gonna stay.

Latest UMASS poll released yesterday shows 59 % in favor of and 37 % opposed to casinos.

Looking good so far !

I'm glad the polls are looking good so far, but I'm skeptical of 413AceKing's assessment that "the casual voter who is not following the issue closely are going to support the casinos." I'm afraid a lot of these people who don't strongly care either way will revert take the conservative approach of sticking to the long-time status quo of a casino-free Massachusetts.

In the mean time, we've got a fun couple weeks coming up. I think the MGC is scheduled to award the Eastern MA license next week.

According to my notes.......Friday of next week. I hope they don't delay. We need more progress BEFORE the November Repeal Vote....

I agree, the more progress that is made, equals the more money the taxpayers will likely be liable for repayment if the repeal goes through. I am concerned though that once one party is knocked out will that cause a ton of supporter's of that proposal to vote to repeal?

I don't think so. I for one am pulling for Mohegan Sun in Revere, but If they lost would still go to Wynn in Everett.

I think most of us are PRO CASINO 1st, and then have a preference for who we would like to see get the licenses.

Also, I am looking at this vote as crucial for the eventual passage of online poker in Mass. I personally think that hinges on having Casinos 1st approved in the state.

No Casinos would = No Online Poker......at least not for a VERY long time.

With Casinos, I feel the chance for online poker in the state would come sooner. This is one reason I am pro Mohegan Sun vs Wynn.......Wynn has voiced support for Sheldon Adelsons views on online gaming....Mohegan is Pro online Gaming.....

Cant wait to get this all finalized !

Looks like they extended the meetings on an "if neccessary" basis. 9/17 is the last evaluation/determination day on the schedule.

Technically, the license will not actually be awarded until then. But the selection of the licensee will occur in the next couple weeks.

After reading that (and a near-identical piece in the Globe): I hope cameras are rolling when Steve Wynn walks into a MGC meeting in Boston and tells them to GFY.

Do other states give "the look of the building" equal weight to the company's finances and industry experience?

More importantly: has a single member of the MGC looked at the models of, or even spoken to Gaming Commissioners of, other states?
