Does Suffolk's property straddle a line between Revere and East Boston or something?

Yes. That is why both Revere and East Boston were designated Host Communities.

The property they have has 53 acres in Revere. They are exploring the possibility of moving the entire proposal onto that side of the border. It's a long shot.

I'm starting to think that it's a long shot to see any casino ever open up in MA or NH, anywhere.

I think we are ok. With community votes already passed in favor of Casinos in Everett and Springfield.......the MA Gaming Commission would have to find both Wynn and MGM (in addition to Caesars) "unsuitable"

If that were to happen, this entire process would be considered a joke by all the world. (if it's not already)

Agree with this. These casinos are going to be awarded in Q1. And it doesn't matter to me, but the slot parlor license should be awarded by the end of the year.

I'm just hoping Wynn has a decent poker room, or a room at all. I was confident Caesars would be committed to poker, but hard to say about Wynn.

I was extremely disappointed with the MA Gaming Comm. opinion on Caesars, and also with the seemingly hostile attitude they have had toward Wynn.

Somebody left a copy of the Herald at work the other day and while flipping through it there was a story on the casinos, Foxwoods in particular. What I got from it was that we most likely won't be seeing any casinos in MA for the reasons already stated in this thread, the MGC's excessive regulations. They stated that Wynn most likely won't pass the screening process either even though Everett is all about being a host community. Pretty disappointing.

Foxwoods received conditional approval from the MGC yesterday (they still need local approval). Also, from recent comments from the MGC Chairman Crosby, I am expecting MGM to get approval as well.
Suffolk Downs is still working on their proposal and moving it completely to Revere, which now seems to be more plausible than it was when I first heard of the idea. They already have a clause in their Revere HCA which allows them to renegotiate with Revere without having to hold another vote. With 52 acres of property in Revere they can certainly make it work and they said they are close to announcing a new operator.
In 2016/17 there will be full casinos in MA, potentially earlier if they are allowed to open up in phases. Even though the process is very strict, there is money to be made in MA so their will be casinos.

"another vote"? Did Revere already hold a local election on this?

Revere election was same day as East Boston. I cannot find the results, but the Globe said it was expected to pass with a wide margin. East Boston voted no 4300 to 3400, approx.

Revere voted the same day EastBoston Did. The vote was;
YES: 59%
NO: 36%

They now need to resubmit a proposal to the gaming commission with a REVERE ONLY Plan (obv w/out Caesars) that will be found suitable or unsuitable by Mass Gaming.

MA Gaming has expressed concerns that the reduction in available acreage for a Revere only plan could be an issue, but nonetheless, Suffolk Downs may resubmit a Revere Only Plan.....

I think it would be safe to say they are a serious underdog at this point.

It seems the most likely scenario for Casino's in Mass will be;

Everett - Wynn
Springfield - MGM
Taunton - Tribal

*and you might even see something on Martha's Vineyard/Cape

I can't see that Milford ever had a chance competing for the one and only "Boston" License. (regardless of what happens w/the community vote tomorrow)

Unless of course Ma Gaming finds Wynn "unsuitable" in which case forget all of it. Maybe we wont ever have any casions

I was just reading that in Haverhill, they're having the same trouble with medical marijuana dispensaries--they just became legal, but every neighborhood comes out to protest any plans to put one in their back yard.

Congrats, MA, you've got legal marijuana and casinos, and nowhere to put 'em.

(I disagree with casino opponents, obv, but I understand why they're opposed to them; but I cannot, for the life of me, understand why anyone would be opposed to sick people getting medicine that will help them.)

EDIT TO ADD: Of course, as soon as I posted that, I came up with the answer: dispensary opponents are EXACTLY like casino opponents, they fear a bogeyman that doesn't exist.

This is typical Massachusetts - NIMBY till the end. Ask 1000 Massachusetts residents if they're in favor of alternative energy, and I'm guessing 90% or more will say yes. Then ask those 90% if they'd be willing to have one of the turbine monstrosities in their backyard, and see the percentage flip flop.

It's the same here - if you ask the same 1000 if they'd want a way to capture the tax revenue being lost to RI and CT casinos, the vast majority would say definitely......until and unless it's via a casino in their precious town.

MA voters have never been know for consistency. In 1996 they overwhelmingly passed a term limits referendum while simultaneously electing 100% of incumbents.

Looks good for Steve Wynn in Everett... I doubt whether Suffolk Downs can get its act together in time and submit a winning proposal (with a new partner) based just on Revere.
Wynn will run a classier place than Caesar's or Foxwoods, anyway.

Don't forget that Wynn has not yet been found suitable by the commission. Based on his recent comments I'd say there's also a chance he withdraws. If Wynn doesn't go forward and Suffolk can't get a decent partner and proposal together in time (I suspect they'll also face legal challenges pertaining to the split vote) we could be in a world of hurt.

So that leaves Wynn-unvetted, tribal-with their freedom, slots-only in Leominster, and um....seven nuns in a tent selling bread over in Chelmsford.
WTG !
Seriously, with an existing money-pumper (to the state) like Suffolk Downs, I cannot see how the pols will let that facility wither on the vine. Very mum on who might re-partner with Suffolk, which tells me that somethings up. The fact that CET owns a ton of Sterling/Suffolks debt has got to be the stumbling block.

I spoke with a reporter today who has been following the whole casino madness. She said that she is hearing that Mohegan Sun (already passed background) is expected to step in with Suffolk Downs, however it won't be finalized until after the Nov 24th recount in Palmer. She also said she would not be shocked if Foxwoods also approached Suffolk.

Read that if Suffolk goes ahead and builds in Revere then the track may have to shut down. Think they said it in Mondays Herald. But East Boston will want them out. Said something about them not even being able to plant flowers on the East Boston side.
