When people say they can't understand why the Washington Redskins won't "JUST change their name!", I need to explain this to them.
Of course, they don't believe me.
ME: When you think overnight shipping, you think FedEx. When you think car rental, you think Hertz. Having a brand is WORTH a lot of money! If FedEx changed their name, their company would instantly be worth LESS--a LOT less! They spent decades building up that brand, they would never just toss it away. Now, The LA Clippers just sold for $2B. What does that make an NFL Franchise worth? $3B, minimum? $2.5B? I don't know how much the value of a team would drop if they lost their brand, but even if it were "only" 10%, that's
hundreds of millions of dollars!!!
WHOMEVER I'M EXPLAINING THIS TO: (I swear, this is their reply, every time) But they'll make a lot of money when everyone goes out to buy the new jerseys!
ME: Are you ****ing kidding me? Do you know how many jerseys you need to sell to make up "hundreds of millions of dollars"????
WIETT: (upset about this) Yeah, but still!
ME: (thinks this, no point in saying it) "Still!" I guess that means he's "still" going to believe there's no downside to a brand changing its name, despite everything I just laid out in front of him, because feelings count more than facts.
