What kinds of buy ins are there for the sit-n-gos? How's the action in the tourneys?

I played the afternoon tourney at Mountaineer on Tues. Was kinda disappointed because the posts here say they average around 80 players. We only had about 35. The play in the tournament was typical, a few really good players, and a few super aggressives, and a good few fish. You dont get alot of chips, you start with 2000 chips, and 20 minute levels, by the fourth level your paying 100/200 blinds with a 25ante per hand. Gotta play pretty fast at that point. I did pretty well, I finished 4th and won about $300. The top 5 got paid. Payout for first was $960. The tournament was well directed, a computer voice came up to announce 1 min. left in levels, and a bell signaled level changes. Didnt have to change tables 20 times. Much more structured and well put together than Wheeling tourneys. Buy in was $100. There werent any sit and gos being played while I was there, but the buy-in was $125 and the top two got paid. $750 for first, $500 for second.

A tournament strategy question: I said before that I finished fourth in the Mountaineer tournament. When we got down to four players I was the short stack. I had about 6500 left in chips, and the blinds were 1000/2000 with a 200 ante. The big blind come to me and I am dealt 9-3 offsuit. The player in first position had played tight all day, and raised enough to put me all in with two players to act behind him. Knowing how tight he's played and the tourney situation I look at my hand thinking I almost have to call, then upon seeing my 9-3 and deciding he has at least something in the range of A-10 suit, possibly middle pair, I decided to fold. Immediately the table is in an uproar because I didnt call, even though I showed my hand when I folded. My thought was that even the pot was laying me 2 to 1, what if my hand is bigger than a 2 to 1 dog? My thought was that if I lay down and get lucky enough to get a bigger hand in the small blind or before the big blind got back to me, I might be able to double or triple through and get back in contention. A few of my buddies agreed, and a few thought I shouldve moved with anything. What do you guys think? P.S. I was dealt 8-6 suited the next hand, everyone folded, I raise all in, big blind calls with K-10,catches a K and I bust.

Are the games still pretty easy? I will be making a trip down there soon.

Sure, you can find good games there. But some of the posts in these two WV threads are greatly overstating the situation. If your table is tough (and it does happen), don't hesitate to change.

I was there over the weekend, and I'm begining to notice a cold weather effect at the limit holdem games, whether it spills into the no-limit I don't know.

The table games pit is in the main building, the poker room under the grandstand. To get from one to the other requires either moving one's car or taking the shuttle. This cuts down on the number of people just wandering from the pit into the poker room with a few bucks to take a shot, and when it is freezing as it was last weekend, it becomes significant.

Word is that they are putting a table games pit in the grandstand, maybe that will help a bit...

Anyone have any news about the Charleston area room?

Yeah. Don't hold your breath.

Last I have heard is no license app yet. It appears they have one year from license issue to open a hotel of specified quality or they have to pay something like 1.5 mil. Dealer classes were cancelled, tuition refunded, and there has been little movement on that front. There is also some noise about construction blocking the entrance.

That doesnt sound good. Im at Wheeling now, planning on making the move to Charleston when they opened. So your thinking its gonna be a no go at all?
I moved 6 hours from Ky to Wheeling to deal, Charleston is only 3 hours away.

It will open. Fall is the latest projection. I haven't driven past it for a while so I can't say that ground hasn't been broken yet, but I doubt it.

I drive by it every week almost on my way home. Its always dark though, and ive not noticed anything either.
In my class at Wheeling i was pretty much a teachers aid, or part time instructor since i had 3 years dealing experience, just wasnt dealing certified. So i wonder if they are looking for people to actually train the dealers, and the whole ordeal? If so i need to get my application in soon.

I went down again on Saturday and once again I was a loser. That makes me 1 for 3 with my win being a small $80 the first time I went. (2nd time I lost $150)

Yesterday the players were again HORID even during the afternoon. They made a new table for my group and I was the only one that bought in full. Everyone else bought in for between $75 and $125. It was incredible. I almost wanted to move because of the lack of money but I decided to see how the action went and as I said...these people were clueless. There was only one good other player at the table and he left after 20 minutes.

Things started out well for me. I raised PF w AK and got one caller, a young mom in her 20s that had pictures of her kids everywhere. Flop comes A rag rag with 2 clubs. She has $80 in front of her. I bet $25...she calls. Turn is blank. I bet $35, she calls. (Now I know she is flush drawing). River is a non-club. I bet $20 and she folds.

I also stole a pot after the flop on the button. 4 people see a flop for a raise of $10. Flop comes Q high. I have 8h9h. Check, check, preflop raiser bets $7 into $40. I raise to $35 and everyone folds. Its hard to steal pots at Mtr...that why I mention it.

Then things went bad.

I have about $375 in front of me. I am dealt 66. I raise to $12 get one caller. Flop comes A46 2 diamonds. First to act I check because villian is agro and I expect a bet. Villian bets $25. I check/raise to $75 and he instantly calls. Turn is the 8c. I lead out for $125 and he insta-calls. I think he has AK/AQ, flush draw, or both. River is the 5d. I am watching him and not the board and his eyes lite up. I check and he goes "Im all-in". GOD! I fold and he shows AdTd. -$212 one hand with a flopped set.

I pull 4 green chips out of my pocket and put them with my stack. That give me $260 at the table.

I am MP w KJs. Folded to me, I make it $12 to go. SB has $60 in front and calls. Flop come JJ6r. I bet $10, SB calls. Turn is 7c putting 2 clubs on the board. SB donks into me for $10. I put SB all in for his remaining $40 and he calls w Ac2c and the river is the Tc. -$60.

And finally...I have AA in the BB. Best place to have it at Mtr. Either that or UTG so you can limp r/r. Anyways. There is action in front of me. By the time it gets to me it is $25 to go with 3 players. I r/r to $75 and get one caller. A 20ish girl that does not understand pot odds or bet sizes AT ALL.

Flop comes 223r. She has about $130 in front of here and there is $180~ in the pot. I check and she bets $25 into $180. I c/r her AI and she calls w TT. Turn T, River T. The girl has quads someone give her a free chip set. (They give chip sets to str/royal flushs and quads). -$205

I ended the day down $260. After these few beats, I stayed another 3 hours and was just card dead. The action was there, but I could not get anything playable. I was just looking to get my money in good and never could...so I left a loser again.

Kb,

I'd love to try to get a steady 4/8 or 5/10 game going there. I'd do holdem, Omaha H/L, Omaha High, whatever.

Let me know. They need some different games there that cut down on the 1/2 donkfest variance games that are STILL going on. I wish beats like the above were rare, but it seems like good players can get pounded in the short term. Thankfully I'm way up at Mountaineer, but I've seen some horrible play rewarded.

As I've said, bring 3-4 buy-ins, and you should be ok. Don't show up with under 1,000 for the 1/2 game, buy in for the max, and you will eventually leave with all of the money.

I was there on Saturday too, from about 10:30 am - 5:00pm. Played the 1/2 the whole time and left up $242. This was my fifth time there, and the players seem to be getting worse each time. I don't know who above said that you can't steal pots, but either your timing is off or you are trying to steal from the wrong people. I have had no trouble getting either calls or folds, depending upon what I want.

I have to say, in the month or so I've been going there, the dealers are FINALLY starting to get better. Enough so that I know which ones are still bad and to pay extra attention so I don't get screwed.

I'd make the trip up there on the weekend for a mixed limit game, would prefer HOSE or HOE. One issue is ante sizes and limits. I don't think they have a way to have a bet less than $1.

I asked to start an interest page for $10 / $20 HORSE while I was there and they said would they would not spread it because the dealers don't all know how to deal it properly.

That is pretty silly. I'm fairly sure they can deal three of the games, seeing they do all the time....

I have tried to get a mixed game before. From what I am told, they can't spread Razz, but I would see why there is no way that we couldn't get a HOS or HOSE mixed game, maybe changing games every half hour. I would like to get either a 3/6 or 5/10 mixed game, and would be up for it if others would.

Please be sure to post if you're able to get such a game going, or even an "oh hey I'm going at such a date and time and want to get a mixed game going."

If I can make the trip, HORSE or any other mixed game up to 15-30's good by me.

well it looks like we have some interest. thats cool. question, if you can deal stud (and I ahve played stud in wv several times) how can you not deal razz? guess that doesn't matter really, as long as we mix up the games I dont care what we play......

I don't know why they can spread stud and not razz. If there are going to be a group of people and we can get enough interest in a mixed game, I am there. I only live 15 minutes from Mountaineer, so when really isn't a problem for me
