Yup. Promo funds promote the room. IMO "ethics" is an issue only if the guarantees are represented as funded by the casino vs. the promo fund. If it's disclosed, the customer has all info available to make an informed decision: do not play. Or play and bang head into wall (and enjoy the pizza.)

(I think the source of the problem: back in the poker boom heyday, guarantees were always casino-funded. The fact that this mechanism got shifted onto the players as promo funds became a hot thing is what created angst. So yeah, that sucks, but times change. Due to that change, I agree it should be made clear wherever possible.)

Another angle: as a regular (semi-weekly) customer of a local casino, I choose to only play promo-eligible games when the promo has a payout of $2k/hr or higher. Otherwise I'm playing non-drop games. So, the regular players (regular for those games) are providing me an overlay for playing those games at hours with a greater promo EV than they average. Is the casino unethical for "promoting" me to play a game I don't normally play using the "regs" money?

Can I buy a lotto ticket now when the jackpot is high? Or do I need to have contributed to it by playing last week?

[mod hat on]

No one asked me, and I don't play at MGM, but I both agree and disagree with Rapini here.

I don't agree that politely complaining about it is a bad thing, or is antithetical to "taking action". It is one form of taking action - letting other people know about it, and socializing the discontent to see if others share the same unhappiness. If enough people are unhappy with it, TPTB may notice and make changes. If it spurs enough people to boycott, take action, make it the talk of the tables, maybe something will change. IMO, by all means, use this forum to complain about things you find unjust, and try to get them fixed. (Don't be surprised if others disagree with what you think "everyone" agrees on, though.)

Having said that, one thing that I believe to be anathema to a vibrant forum is axe grinding. Voice your complaints once, or maybe twice, or maybe once a year, or quarter (or some other frequency that people find acceptable), fine. Continue to harangue about it more frequently than that, and you are axe grinding. This is very disruptive to a forum and its community. It should not be permitted or encouraged.

I posted a nice article about forum rules some months back in the moderation thread, but didn't get any feedback on it then. This is one of the things that was suggested, as it happens.

I would also mention that you guys have a great resource here in having the room manager be such an active participant, and having evidence that he listens to your feedback. I'm not saying you need to let him off the hook or anything, but you should definitely not drive him away with petty bull**** that makes him wonder why he bothers. I'm not saying this is an example of petty bull****, but... just be careful not to win the battle but lose the war. Or even lose the battle and the war.

Anyway, just my opinion.

Can we please have a buffer door/mini hallway installed to the smoking area? The entire front of the poker room is freezing cold because the smoking patio door is constantly being opened. It's so bad brush stand workers are wearing their jackets to keep warm.

Ok, my no cap 1/3 table idea was shot down last year. No. worries,. here's an alternate proposal:

Match the stacks 1/3. and/or 2/5. I'm not saying all tables, just a few designated to test it out.

I've noticed a lot of dealers taking either too much rake or too many promo dollars, particularly the latter, at $2/5. It's a reasonable mistake given that at $1/3 they take a promo dollar at $10 and $30, and $2/5 they take one at $20 and $50, and they deal far more $1/3 than $2/5. Often times when I point it out the dealer seems to not be aware that there is a different structure for the two games. It might be worth a quick memo or some kind of reminder to the dealers. I'd say I see it happen at least once every few hours.

This is a great observation. I recommend telling the floor every time that you notice this occurring.

Well said. And to amplify one point, complaining in a forum like this likely has more impact than voting with your feet in an attempt to make it "bad business." If you play elsewhere without saying anything ("complaining"), no one will notice and business will continue as usual. Say something and at least people are aware. Or say something and go play elsewhere. But don't just be silent.

If someone had an issue with my business, I'd much rather have them tell me about it than for them to silently go somewhere else hoping I'd notice the fewer customers and be able to figure out the reason why.

OK gotta bring this up in the forum. Beyond normal name-calling.

Last night I was walking past a 1/3 table and overheard one player of unknown Asian descent angrily berate a black player, calling him a "negro." I asked the dealer if he was going to call the floor, then another player told me it was OK because the black player had just called the Asian player an "oriental." I told the dealer they both should be given the boot. He did nothing. I expressed my concerns and the rest of the table basically shooed me away like I was being a nuisance. (Note the rest of the table was comprised of middle-aged white men. Go figure.). The dealer remained silent.

I told the floor and nothing was immediately done for whatever reason. Ultimately, to my knowledge no discipline was imposed whatsoever. One of the players involved is a regular.

Seems like something MGM would want to make a statement about.

Go bang your head against a wall a few times and see if the wall cares. That's what you're doing here. You have a real opportunity to make a change you're plainly passionate about and you're choosing to do nothing.
It would be ineffective to boycott a room you don't play in.

I'm not a person of color so this isn't really my place to speak but fwiw, while "negro" and "oriental" are outdated terms, they don't have the same extra-offensive connotations that the n-word or a similar words for Asians do. If either player said those, that's bootable. But I know older black folks who self-identify as "negro". In fact, the last census said black/African-American/negro as one of the options because so many people wrote in negro on the previous census after it wasn't printed on the same line as black/African-American [1]. I don't personally know any Asians who identify as "oriental" but I don't know many older Asians; at least one Asian editorialist thinks it's not so bad [2]. The fact that the players were calling each other names should mitigate the situation too IMO, at least for the person who responded.

What was the problem? Did they cover their chicken wing guarantees with pizza beat money?

The high hands are back on Tue and Thu. One hour high hands really? I guess they must be running low on Jackpot funds.

Doesn’t everyone know HH’s with a frequency of more than 30 mins are ineffective, unless the amount paid is equal or higher than 1K/hour. I would
rather see 200/15 mins or 250/30 mins.

Didace, show me you work that it is working on Tue/Thu.

I can run a comparison with the number of tables running to spike at the other place during Tue/Thu.

I can also show the number of people that increased in the tournaments during the day time.

I can tell you the pulse at the tables since I play during that time in the room sometimes.

Zero2Hero13 do you want to play with only the top caliber players in your area or do you wish all players to become top caliber players?

I strongly wish they remain the same level so I can make easy money. I would rather have them complain.

I can't. But I assume MGMNH has and knows how to interpret the data on how promotions influence how many players come to the room.
