Ok so after being on the fence about it for years because of the distance, I finally visited MD Live yesterday for some PLO action.

Overall, loved the room. The main things I hate about MGM are the loudness and the open environment - always just feels so full and busy. It's impossible to have a good conversation without practically yelling. I feel exhausted after a few hours, and feel like I'm constantly looking at the clock to go home.

Did not feel that way at all at MD Live. It's a much more intimate atmosphere and layout. I really enjoyed myself.

That said, 5/25/50 5-card PLO is... oof. Biggest game I've ever played. Thinking I'll come up occasionally to check it out, but it's still pretty far and rich for my blood.

PSA

Starting May 1, we will allow snacks to be eaten in the poker room. Once the mobile app for ordering food has been completed, we will allow food from the outlets to be consumed

Thanks

Mike,

As you going back to more pre-pandemic practices, please consider going back to 9-handed for ring games as you do for the tournaments. So many players get frustrated during extended periods when a couple players at their table are away for whatever reason and are playing short handed. One more seat would make a difference.

Dear God please do not go 9 handed again. Maybe create a dinner list like mgm does but bringing food back to the tables means less walking for extended periods but please do not go 9 handed

God please no. Please no. 9 handed sucks so bad.

We have no plans on returning to 9 handed at this time. We only go 9 handed for tournaments when we expect Saturday flights to have huge alternate lists specifically on multi flight Saturdays. If we expect to be 9 handed Saturday, we have to be 9 handed on the other flights as well. Hope that clears that up

Thanks

Mike

Why does it suck so bad? I’ve been calling for 10-handed tables and cash being allowed to play at all casinos because it would improve game quality and help during times when there are dealer shortages. Is it just a leg room issue or some thought about 8-handed being faster?

The only people that are against 9/10 handed tables, when I talk about it in-person are those with physical disabilities, which I understand, but surely that would be easy to accommodate. Basically all the fun players I talk to love the idea and these are players you want at your table.

I think its more of a comfort issue. 10 handed is too cramped. 8 is much more comfortable but you often deal with a table that is only 6 handed due to people being away from the table. Personally I think 9 handed is a good medium but thats just me.

Well, 9/10 handed also sucks because you don't get to play as many hands.

Cramped tables, slower game, it tightens the game up even more (which if you've ever played at mgm you understand just how God awful nitty the md live games already are). I'm here far more hours then most and literally no one has ever said they would prefer 9 handed so when you say all the fun players you talk to want it...I'm going to say you literally made that up. I call...I'm all in...you're absolutely bluffing, you may now rebuy

We used to see people posting updates regarding the card room on this site, maybe those postings have now moved elseswhere. Anyhow, today in the room i heard for the first time, from a dealer, that they are going to $5+$3 on the rake, starting July 1.

Can’t believe I missed this, good time though with the rake increase. Haven’t played at Mdlive since 2016 — what sane winning player would play nl at mdlive other than nits who don’t want to deal with traffic and wait lists? Nittier games plus now they will be raked more than softer games elsewhere, buy an ez pass fellas and download some podcasts. MGMNH, Borgata, NOLA, Vegas, and West coast fun players I talk with always complain about 8 handed because the tables get shorter faster. I assume you are a promo grinder that likes to make the games worse, which is why you play at live so much and are adverse to change, for that I will give you a pass and spell it out for you.

Remember, you make a lot of your profit at llsnl by being the last aggressor in large multi-way pots with strong hands and fun players love those big bloated pots, they enjoy playing wacky/bad in them. By being 8/7/6/5 handed, it just decreases the likelihood of big spots. Sort of the same concept in allowing cash to play, easier for people to reload, not be embarrassed, so it increases the chances you get into those big spots. That’s more of a regulation issue but something I think we should champion here on the deuce and get the Overton window going.

Everyone here is going to whine about the rake, offer no alternative except lower it, and nothing will happen… the decline of mdlive will continue. Maybe if the games just die out in one week, they will roll back the rake but I have only ever seen that happen once, it was in the northwest. Make the games better with more action and the rake bump wouldn’t matter. Maybe that’s increasing players per table, maybe not. Other ways would be institute a dead button ante and make blinds flat so 1/3 and 2/5 would be (2)3/3 and (3)5/5, or make the button a blind like in San Fran, or institute a sleeper straddle etc etc.

Rake - money that goes to the casino for their profits - is not increasing. Promo drop increasing which is money that is 100% plowed back into the poker economy.

What I've heard is $1 at $10, another $1 at $20 and third $1 at $30 in the smaller pot raked games (1/3 NL, 4/8 limit etc.).

2/5 NL first dollar @10, second @30 and 3rd dollar @100.

This just rumor from discussion while playing tonight. Will find out for sure tomorrow.

Wrong. The casino takes a transaction fee, usually 10%, some casinos even higher.

Plus there are several other issues involved here as well.
1) Promos over $600 generate tax forms. A breakeven recreational player might not be able to use gaming losses to write them off depending on how they itemize/their other streams of income making this an overall nuissance.
2) $9 effective drop ($5 rake + $3 promo + $1 tip) makes lower limit game difficult to play profitably. It might not even make sense for players to play outside of promo hours.
3) There is an expectation/pressure to tip excessively on those high hands similarly to Bad Beat Jackpots previously (i.e. at least $25 or so on a $600 high hand if you don't want to ruin the rapport with the dealers, being referred to as a stiff, etc...)

You can't write off the high hand tax form anyway. I've corrected several people on this misconception. It is not a 1099g for gambling it's a 1099misc for a prize winning
