Do any of these have tournaments I could play in? I'm not looking to play cash, ideally I want to do some tourneys that are under $100

^ you are probably put of luck. Of one of the 18+ Indian casinos has a tourney is will almost be a wretched super turbo that becomes a shovefest by 4th level

On the bright side... You are 18 and that's an awesome age to be. Go get laid wait til your are thirty like me to spend hours upon hours in a casino with the dregs of society

You could check out the site I represent, ThePokerAtlas.com. We actually just started a sponsored forum here on 2+2 in this section, as well, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask us there!

We also launched a tournament listings search tool here on 2+2, which you can access from any page under "2+2 Shortcuts" on the top left.

EDIT: Oops, missed that one of your concerns was that you're 18, not just that you're looking for <$100. Nevertheless, you can find any <$100 tournaments using the tool or our site, but gwjones00 said, check with the casino regarding age limits. =/

So, I'm a Californian who has spent the last 4 years living in Japan teaching English. I love the poker industry, but I honestly am not so great. I'm working on my online game (since I still can), but honestly I need to improve a lot if I'm ever going to make money at it, even as a hobby.

Anyways, I am moving back to SoCal this August and am considering becoming a poker dealer. Finding information on the process to become a dealer for each casino is difficult from my search online. I know the basic way is to go to dealer school then apply to a casino. But I do know that some casinos actually prefer in-house training. Others will only hire those who already have experience.

Does anyone know which are which for the LA casinos? Would anyone playing at Commerce, the Bike, HG, Hustler, or any other SoCal casino be willing to make a quick inquiry the next time they are at a casino? Just an informal asking of a passing dealer or a floorman (if actually know anything) would be awesome.

my best friend is leaving in july to teach english through jet in japan. he was told u can make pretty good money teaching english on the side esp if u have experience. my advice would be to continue to teach english here in socal once u get back since u have 4 yrs of teaching exp. i assume that u can make a ton more than as a dealer and u wont have to put up w/ all the dealer abuse.

I'm currently on the JET program. With our contracts we're not technically allowed to teach on the side, though that doesn't keep everyone from doing so, and I have a English conversation group that gives me gifts all the time.
Best of luck to him though, it is a great experience!

I am completely uninterested in teaching in my future. And I really do like the poker industry. It just seems impossible to get answers about how to get into the casino business (at least while I live on the other side of the planet and can't go in to ask the casinos myself).

There doesn't seem to be a lot of openings for poker dealers right now after browsing for a few minutes online. I found part time positions open at The Bike for tournaments only and probably from there they get promoted to full time cash dealers.

On the other hand, there is a demand for "gaming associates" which is the people that handle the payouts of the pit games such as blackjack. Go on craigslist and type in gaming associate.

Not sure when I will be at a casino but will ask a dealer and floorman about poker dealers.

Wow, That would be amazing. Thanks in advance!

I'll do some searches on gaming associates.

I honestly still have that dream of, you know, playing poker for a living. But I am really far from it being real and any other way of being involved in the industry really interests me.

The Hustler might be hiring dealers. I know a person who I played with for a while at the poker who tables who just got hired on as a dealer there.

Do you know what their hiring process is?
Did your friend already have experience, or did he just go through a poker school?

Thanks!

Ok, thanks!
I'll probably start calling casinos soon just to ask. But I had a feeling I'd get more 'experience' answers from those that already went through the process to get jobs.

found out my friend will be teaching somewhere in hokkaido when he leaves in july. heard it is cold there since ur near russia.

anyways still not sure why you want to become a poker dealer when u return to la. you seem very qualified to do something else (even if it doesn't involve teaching). although ive never dealt cards i play live a lot in la and see just how shytty of a job it is.

Wow, so he's coming to Hokkaido too! If he has any questions about living in Japan or Hokkaido, especially being from SoCal, have him message me or he can post in the JET or HAJET forums.

Do you know what part of Hokkaido he is in? If he doesn't know yet and only knows 'somewhere' in Hokkaido, then there is a higher chance he might be taking my job. lol.

I like the idea of being around poker, and to even move up in the poker hierarchy (supervisor, card room manager, tournament director, etc.) might require some experience at the bottom. Plus I like dealing in home games and think I would be accurate (more than many dealers), and friendly (more than many dealers) so hopefully would be liked and might get okay tips. The other idea for a career I have is to go back into Construction Management, which I liked, but didn't always love.

I know what you mean by dealing being a bad job, but personally I don't see it being that horrible. I know players especially at the Commerce and the like are 'terrible', but I haven't seen them be that bad in my opinion, and I've played tons of hours there too (when I lived there four years ago).

The Poker side of that casino could definitely use a thorough renovation. Many mornings the casino is less than 1/4 full during the week. The rake leaves a lot to be desired and the player pool can wear upon you imo.

It's going to depend on what the owners want (the casino is owned and operated by different people than the racetrack), but what has always been planned is for the new development to include a casino and horse racing simulcast facility integrated into it. Which means a brand new Hollywood Park casino which could end up being really nice. We'll see though.

Anyone know anything about either of these tournaments/series? I've dug around a bit but can't even find past years results or the structure of the one at HG. Are these as awful as they seem? The formats seem really bizarre and I'm not sure I at all follow what the hell they are.

There's at least some info on on the Hustler tournaments, but still not clear on some things. Any/all info appreciated.

I am going to LA to play in a couple of weeks and was just looking for some info on the $2/5 games.

I normally buy in for 100BB/$500, but I heard in Commerce the max buy in is $200 at $2/5, but at Bicycle there is a $5/5 game which you can buy in for $500.

Is there no game at Commerce where you can buy in for deeper as $200 is a bit short.

Also how do the $2/5 games in LA compare to Vegas. Are they softer/looser etc

I got some info off these links

http://tworags.com/files/la%20comps.htm

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...KMjZIMmc#gid=0

The second link says Commerce has $3/5 games with both $200 cap and a $500 cap, while the first link only mentions $3/5 with a $200 cap in Commerce.

Can anyone confirm if the game with $500 cap runs there regularly. I don't want to play with $200 stack on $3/5 so might just be playing at Bicycle if it is $200 capped.
