I only have experience with the Bike.

It's worth playing there in the sense that there are always games running. There's usually one or two 2/3 tables going around 9am and by noon at least three or four. 5/5 can be a bit slower with sometimes no games running in the early morning and just one or two around noonish.

The 2/3 during the day is mostly older men and a handful of younger regs. So not the most fishy games (Bike in general is lots of regs at 2/3 and above, other than late on weekends). Lots of the older guys are standard nitty OMCs but there's a fair amount who play too many hands preflop and/or can't get away from big pairs post flop (so there's still money to be made).

5/5 is more reg-infested and generally higher level of play, but there's often a wealthy guy or two who is splashing around and can make for high EV (and variance) tables.

Would love to hear people's thoughts about best times/rooms to play 2/3, 2/5, 5/5 in in LA.

I've been playing exclusively at The Bike because it's the closest to me, but I'm increasingly feeling like I'm sitting at tables that are filled with too many solid/good players. There is always the occasional fish who will spew away a few hundred bucks, but they don't often last too long before the table is mostly solid again.

The only place I've played other than The Bike is Hollywood Park one midday after I'd flown back into town and was nearby at LAX. The games seemed pretty good and from what I've heard are generally better than the Bike.

I've also heard Hustler is generally better than the Bike with more rec players or people donking it up while drinking.

I imagine a lot of this boils down to times playing, with daytime being worse than evenings and weekdays being worse than Thurs/Fri/Sat.

But does anyone have extensive experience playing everywhere and feel that one place has the softest games?

Commerce Casino for 5/5 is best imo. There's like 10 tables running middle of a weekday recently and action is good. Haven't played much elsewhere recently except Hustler and I only went there for some meet up games which were especially soft. Only problem is Commerce is $500 cap for 5/5 and 2/5 is actually a $200 buy in only, and 1/3 is a $100 buy in only so those generally aren't worth playing.

Can I call ahead for wait list at Hollywood Park?

At Commerce if the 5/5 is capped at 100bb, is the next level up 5/10, and what is the cap there 100bb or deeper?

I'm coming out in the next few weeks and after visiting the bike and hustler on my last trip, the games were way better at commerce because of the sheer volume of them, but I cant recall the max buyins and i really dont want to go somewhere where the only games are100bb or less buyins. I also visited Hollywood Park which was pretty ghetto but games were ok (believe I played a 5/10/20 game in the back room but wasnt the greatest of games).

Commerce 5/10 is $500-$1500 buy in and the 10/20 is uncapped

Gardens is pretty good..i played the 5/5 with the $600 buy in ....there are some nitty grinders but also enough spewy bad players to keep the games good...you may need to table hop to find the right game...but there are usually quite a few 5/5's going...they are not on bravo or poker atlas buy they have their own app where you can track the games..

I've only been to LA once and know very little about it, I've got a work trip there next month and I'm staying in DTLA Monday to Weds nights as have meetings etc.

However I've taken Thursday to Monday off and I'm going to do a bit of gambling. Going to Joshua Tree over the weekend probably.

Where is safe/convenient neighbourhood to stay on the east/south sides of the city if I want to play at two or more of Bike/Commerce/Hustler/Hollywood Park/The Gardens?

I;ll have a rental car and I understand traffic in LA is ridiculous.

New Gardena Hotel near the Hustler is a very good value. Clean, seemed safe, not a bad price.

For the Bike and Commerce, the onsite hotels are pretty nice. I've stayed at both quite a bit. For HollyPark I would reco a hotel down Century towards LAX; the Inglewood area hotel scene has not quite cought up with all the recent infra that went into SoFi and HP project.
Sorry, no help on Hust or HGardens; my father in law lives in InggleW and thats where I always camp out.

Can you walk this?

Would love to visit LA sometime but not rent a car. Would also probably consider staying in Redondo beach

+1 to not walking. However, Lyft/Uber may be possible.

LA, like many American cities, is not designed for walking in between places pretty much anywhere, also not in the areas where the casinos are. Public transportation is also pretty much nonexistent. You'll pretty much need a rental car, or uber/lyft, deal with it...

I'm sure there's a sidewalk on Redondo Beach Blvd between the New Gardena Hotel and Hustler Casino. And as long as you don't wander into any neighborhoods the streets of LA are generally fairly safe to walk on. Redondo Beach Blvd. is going to be heavily trafficked so there's less chance of being robbed. That being said taking an uber would probably be smarter.

Technically you could ..it's only about a mile..but Gardena is not the greatest area...especially if your carrying cash...plus people drive crazy on Redondo beach Blvd (or any other major road in LA County) so i'ts dangerous to walk in that regard too....i just Uber it for 7 bucks...

Hey folks,
In LA for a few days while the wife attends a conference so I'm planning to try the daily tourney at the Commerce on Monday (closest casino to my hotel).

Any advice? Will I get stabbed on the way out?

Highly doubtful.

I visit from Canada every few months and I go for walks in every direction daily, by myself, albeit during the day every time. The parking lot is massive, lots of security, and even on my walks, other than the occasional unhoused or two (which, frankly, are in every major city, including in Canada), I have never been worried about my security.

Yes, the reputation of Commerce is along the lines of which you describe, but my personal experience is quite different. I'd be curious of other opinions on this matter.

Thanks.

Any experience at Hollywood Park? It's farther from my hotel but located in more of a tourist area.

If I had to guess I'd estimate the odds of getting stabbed at Hollywood Park is ten times more likely than Commerce. If you want to get shot go to Hustler. The Bike is nice and so is Gardens Casino. You're fine in all of these casinos and all of these areas, just pay attention to your surroundings wherever you go, especially in new areas. I prefer to play at Commerce mostly but I like to mix it up too.

I ended up going to Hollywood Park, partly to check out Sofi Stadium. But yeah, not the nicest area around there.
