I'll be in LA for work feb 7-10, staying in a hotel near LAX.
I researched card rooms and it looks like Hollywood Park is the closest card room to LAX.

What's the action like there on weekdays?
I usually play NL $2/5 or $5/5?

Is parking easy or convenient?

I usually play at Commerce when I'm in LA but I have limited time and want to try Hollywood Park because of convenience and location.

Do they still do free food for the NL 80-120 game at the bike?

Better than ok weekday action at HP, provided that you play at night.

Parking is awesome. Parking structure next to the casino has ample parking. If you play $5/$5 or higher, they validate valet.

Do you know if they have 8/16 and above limit games?

They definitely have 8/16 LHE. Look above for my trip report.

I was at HP at 8am Tuesday this week and there was what appeared to be a phenomenal 8/16 game going strong. I don't know a thing about LHE but I watched exactly one hand and it was like a $1,200 pot. Seriously I don't know if I've ever seen more physical chips pushed to someone in my life.

That would be 50 big bets even if it was a kill pot. 75 big bets with no kill. At limit it's hard to build a pot that big. At 12/24 (they have a half kill) it would take being 5 handed and capped almost every street, but I guess it could happen. The pots can look huge because even just a $600 pot would be 300 chips.

I have seen pots around ~30 big bets fairly frequently though.

Do they regularly spread PLO at HP? If so what stakes and is it split pot?

Yeah I mean never let the truth get in the way of a good story, etc, but I'd take the waaaay over on 300 chips. It was like 5 racks minimum. It took four two-handed pushes.

Howdy.
Headed to LA first full week of March looking for interesting mixed games in the lower stakes. Probably 4-8, 5-10, 8-16, 10-20 as likely target stakes. I can find Commerce on Bravo and the Bike on Atlas -- any other suggestions or recommendations? Would prefer a mix that includes Stud8, O/8, 2-7TD, & badugi. Other additional games are fine. I'm staying near the Bike, will have a rental for transportation. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

If you find a lower stakes mixed game here, let me know. I live here and I've yet to see one run regularly. They tried a low stakes (4-8 or 8-16, I can't remember which) HORSE game at Commerce about ten years ago and it either wouldn't start or would be short-handed frequently.

I can say with some confidence that there are *no* low stakes (20-40 or under) 2-7TD or badugi games spread in Los Angeles either as a stand-alone or in a mixed game. I'd love to be proven wrong, because I like mixed games.

The Gardens has a (great) 12-24 Big O/Stud 8 game that goes every day--often as many as 3 or 4 tables of it running on Fridays and Saturdays.

One night maybe a week or two ago they did add I believe Badugi and Deuce to Seven Triple Draw but that is not a regular occurrence whatsoever.

This is great to hear. I may have to go back there. Is the Big O round played pot-limit? That would make it a really big game compared to the stud8 round.

Is the 2/3 game at the bike the lowest NL game with deep buy in and therefore the best?

I believe it is the smallest 100bb game, but whether that makes it "the best" is a matter of opinion. It used to be a nitfest, where people would buy in short and sit out while eating their free food. There's no more free food, so some old nits may be gone, but I doubt you will get the action you find at the commerce for instance.

Alright so I need all the advice I can get for my upcoming trip to LA. I have never been, all I have is the plane tickets booked currently. I am going with my best poker friend who is also playing for a living. We are staying from March 22-29th. Any tips or pointers would be appreciated. Need to figure out a place to stay and such too. Thinking of using AIRBNB to save money.

Thanks!!

Are you coming just to play poker, or also to visit people, go to the beach, visit the area, etc?

These questions are always so vague. The LA area is a huge, spread out place that has every kind of option under the sun for every kind of person. You've got to give us more to go on.

Anybody hear anything about a dealer shortage in LA? Had a dealer at HG talking about how a bunch of commerce dealers left and that they now have a long waiting list there because they cant open enough tables.

Makes sense. Now that they have that $8-$16 Stud8/Big O mix they will be getting more of my business.
