I'm visiting Los Angeles for a lousy reason, frankly - one of my best friends since HS is losing her courageous cancer battle and I have to say good bye. However due to her condition she cannot handle a 24/7 vigil so I will have downtime. So I wanna play poker.

Here's the usual questions that probably bore the crap out of you regs:
  • What room is best? I usually play $1/2 or $1/3 NLHE with $300 max buy-ins though I also enjoy mixed games in the $4/8 to $8/16 range. I also enjoy low-buy in donkaments.
  • How long does it take to get to the room?(s) I will be staying at an Airbnb in the Valley Glen area and my friend lives up in Santa Clarita.
  • Alcohol? Free? I am not the type to get ****-faced but I do like a beer or two while playing.
I of course welcome any other tips. My timing is pretty fluid. All I know is I get the rental car Sunday 11 AM and drop it back off Thursday around 11 AM and in between if I am not spending time with my my friend or sleeping I want to do some things. This involves playing cards, visiting Amoeba, visiting the Rainbow Room (I'm kind of metal) and on Monday night watching my Giants lose again.

If anyone wants to PM me that's fine. I'm also down with meeting fellow 2+2 folks and hopefully staying out of their pots.

The Bike has a 2/3 game that is 300 max. Anything below 5/5 (300-500 min/max) at Commerce isn't worth playing.

I don't know anything about card rooms in Northern LA area that might be closer to you.

California law does not allow casinos to give away alcohol for free

Coming from around where you are you're probably minimum half hour from either Bike or Commerce, but that's with little to no traffic (which is rare). During heavier traffic, I'd guess 60-90 minutes.

Commerce seems to have mixed and other non-NLHE games at lower levels. Can they be counted on to run all the time?

Just a PSA but if you want to play a deep low stakes/mid stakes game, lucky lady casino has been running a 5/5 Mississippi straddle $500-$1500 some what daily.

Hey I'm moving to LA January 15th and looking to rent a room/shared apartment. Budget is max $1200/month but I'd prefer something abit cheaper. I'm a social and active guy from Norway in his late 20's. Hit me up if you can help me in any way. Kindly appreciate it!

$1200/month will get you a nice cardboard box in Cali. Or you could split a tuff- shed with someone.

In case you aren't joking and really don't know about the January LA Poker Classic that has been running for over 25 years.

Anyone have a suggestion for a good tournament series held in Vegas between late May and early July?

Anyone have experience in the 1/200 or 2/400 mix at gardens? Pretty tough line up, lots of action, etc? Will be there during wpt in January. Thanks

If anyone knows Gardens 5/5 reg David, or if he’s on here, just want to say extremely sorry for probably passing you the flu. He was kind enough to let me hit his vaporizer Sunday night , and I was feeling 100%, but the next day felt like I was hit by a truck and I’ve been in bed since Monday. Wouldn’t wish this on anyone. Sorry if you caught it

Yeah, possible. I guess it has like a day or two incubation period before it really hits you, though you’re still contagious. Get your flu shots imo.

Is there anywhere else in LA besides Commerce that takes a bad beat jackpot drop even when there's no flop?

Is this still true? If so, I'd be down to pitch in a few bucks to share whatever security team you use to get out of there.

In all seriousness if its still running I'd come down and play, I miss the Normandie club

Assuming you've seen Sicario, it's the same team they use to extract the witness out of Juarez. Occasionally messy, but highly effective.

I'm 25 year old in LA visiting my college buddy as well as to grind 2/5 and 5/10. Would be cool to meet some 2+2ers and hang out. My buddy works a 9-6 so that gives me a lot of free time. PM me if you want to grab food or drinks. I will also be in San Diego next week.

Not true. Hustler only takes $1 collection when the blinds chop or everyone folds to a preflop raise (which admittedly doesn't happen often in LHE). Commerce takes $1 collection and $1 BBJP when there's no flop. This is in the $8/$16 LHE game in both places, so perhaps things are different in other games.

Even worse, at one point Commerce merged the jackpot pool for $8/$16 and $20/$40 LHE, but only took preflop BBJP collections from the $8/$16 game. The rake was the same in both games, so the $20/$40 were sharing in the same pool, but contributing less per table. I don't think the pools are merged anymore, but it was pretty annoying when it happened.

To some that may seem like overkill - but seems about right if you want to make it from Lucky Lady to the 110 with more than 1000 USD.
