Re: London

Why vic no longer has the regular friday Saturday tournament? That used to be my best hour every week.

the demand for live poker is high, there is also staff/dealer shortages and tournaments don't make much money for the poker room vs cash games

So, they have upped all their buy ins, increased rake, and reduced the structure and people are still turning up to play them (me included for a couple)

The Vic has changed their tournament schedule a little bit, keep checking in on their facebook page. the most recent one is a £250+£200 bounty + £50 rake Monday tournament (earlier start for this bank holiday)

Re: London

just thought people might want to hear my views on London poker at the moment. I have visited the main 4 rooms over the last few months, and played mostly weekends cash games and a few tournaments

I would recommend anyone going to a London casino for the first time in over a year, have your ID, as some are re checking ID and job details etc on your first return since the lockdown.

in no particular order...

Empire - plenty of cash games, has been a bit quieter than it used to be, some Fridays and Saturdays it still doesn't fill up. Usually not much of a wait for a seat tho. They offered a £500 a day high hand bonus (yea I shipped one) but now are back to offering their cash race promo which I personally hate. Food is still crap, and sometimes short on waiters/waitresses. Overall still a good room to visit, plenty of value in the cash games, but I wish they offered a more fun/rec friendly promo and not this cash race.

Aspers - played just a couple times, once for a tournament. New card room management staff (those familiar with the GUKPT will recognize them) They offered a decent £250 tournament last weekend with a decent structure with plans for more. (added money in form of £150 for biggest stack from each flight and £225 for highest hand each flight) Food and drinks wise your best bring your own in (you can bring in what you want from outside, just no alcohol and no glass bottles) Cash games looked very decent, lots of money on the tables and plenty of action from what my friends who were playing told me. No free parking currently, its quite close to me but still not a huge fan of this place, the blue lighting does my head in among other things.

The Vic - played a week night tournament (tuesday £200) and also the deepstack plus a few cash games. They have really screwed with the structures and buy ins. All buy ins are up, structures are much worse. the £200 was a very fast turbo, and the deepstack has doubled the buy in, and a reduced structure, day 2 was in the money within 30mins, and they set the final table in less than 2 hours. They are making some changes over the next few months so follow their facebook page for regular updates (the Monday tournament is now a £250+200+50 bounty event but again quite fast structure) Cash games, small sample but not that good action, lots of usual old regs, and quite alot of short stacks.

The Hippodrome - just WOW, this place is just different class imo. They moved from the top 4th floor down to the 3rd floor during the lockdown and its just stunning. Now running bigger capacity of tables, room looks lovely, games are good, plenty of games getting started from lunchtime onwards, good variety too including 2/5, 5/10 and 1/2/5 6 card PLO all running regularly especially at the weekend. Food is great as always. Currently my first choice room for cash games and will be playing their £275 tournament next month too.

hope anyone reading this finds it useful, no rooms using plexiglass (can be requested) and maybe 1 in 10 people wearing masks. Just remember to have ID if its your first time in a while as some are doing updates on their file/record for members

all rooms have twitter pages and are updating quite often with games they have running.

enjoy

Re: London

Thanks for the tips and write up, always like hearing how London poker is, surprising how there is still a large choice of rooms with quite a few tables with how good the hippodrome sounds

I wonder how they check job details ended up going a couple of months ago after a night out without ID so couldn’t get into a game, different from the past when as long as you cashed out less than £1500 they didn’t seem to mind

Re: London

Went to the Hippo today. Nice new room with lots of space.
Although I do think Hippo has the better players. It's a bit like Aria in Vegas where the nicest room attracts the more skilful players.

I was surprised how few players wore masks, if only because I do think it makes it harder to get reads on players with masks - so why not take advantage of that edge?

How was the field/recreational? Hippo used to attract a lot of them before the pandemic.
I went a few weeks ago before they opened 17 tables, the long list was 25 players... waited for 1h-ish before decided to leave, no ppl drinking/having fun

good that you mentioned the unmasking, this stopped me the most to go there.

I don't really have the sample size but for what it's worth in 2 hours of players, but I only saw one drinks order. This was Saturday afternoon.

My wife went yesterday and said they ran out of dealers so had to wait 40 minutes for a table. The good thing is that they do have a lot more space now, so the only issue is the number of dealers.

I had to wait about 10 minutes but them they opened a new one.

Re: London

Anyone heard about the vaccine passport? Would it be compulsory by end of Sept? I personally would feel much more confident if the requirement is inplace. Probably I'm old,London

there has been no mention of it, and I doubt given how long they have been shut they will inforce it, they can't afford to lose customers anymore.

Fingers crossed we are over the worst of it and we are slowly working back to normal, most people are not wearing a mask except for on public transport, and even then its around 30/40% max wearing them, and clearly not all "exempt" people

Re: London

You don't need any proof of income unless you're planning on dropping £20k+ on the gaming tables.

Re: London

Nice report fazzers,

Always good to get a fresh perspective of players' experience of live poker in London. Personally, I've been playing live poker in London since the first Gutshot days and when hands at The Vic were self-dealt... and after all those years (as a cash-game player) I've come to one conclusion... switching between playing at The Empire and The Hippo on evenings from Thursday to Sunday is the way to go. (Plus Saturday and Sunday afternoons.)

Quite simply this is down to when and where the 9 to 5 ers and the tourists play plus where table-selection is at its best. That little "POKER" sign outside The Empire along with The Hippo's connection to Poker Stars - right slap bang in the centre of the West End - is all you need to attract the Asian, American and European holidaymakers who are here to throw away their money.

Why would you take yourself away to some dumpy out-of-the-way casino at Stratford Shopping centre or to some dingy place in Edgeware Road for the nitty old-timers, when all the action you need is contained around the glitz and glamour of the West-End?

That's it.

Anyone in the Harrow area interested in private cash games? I will be running a game on the 8th. I have 2 tables with £1-£1 and £-£2 available. Please message me if you are interested. Thanks

The empire has cancelled their tournament schedule. Anyone knows why? Do they have any plan to bring it back soon?
