Personally, I won't be going there if I ever get back to regular live poker as I don't like how Kansas has a more direct financial interest in the "ownership" of the casino.
Yeah, I'm still a little confused on how much real power the state has with the daily operations of the casino. I have been looking into the state's gaming law and mostly the phrase "Gaming Commisson" has been replaced with "Lottery" and "casino" is a "Lottery Gaming Facility". But I don't think they are taking significant amounts of advantage over this. Kansas casinos still tax less than Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania to name a few states. Also KS requires a minimum theoretical slot payout of 87% on every machine. This is the highest I have seen nationwide in casinos (Missouri requires 80%).

I also assume the poker room only rakes $4 max? If they didn't, that would be the biggest reason I would avoid playing there.

Interesting about the slot payout for Hollywood as I know people who feel they can't win at Hollywood like they do at Argosy or one of the other Kansas City Missouri area casinos.

Fwiw, most slots in Missouri are not set near the mimimum due to gaming climate and competition. On average penny video slots, which is the most popular form of slots by far, typically pay 87-89% in Missouri based upon monthly reports from the Missouri Gaming Commission. But Missouri casinos do reserve the right to set them as low as 80%, unlike Kansas. Unfortunately Kansas does not publish electronic gaming machine payouts grouped by domination like Missouri does. So, I wouldn't be surprised that KS slots pay similar to MO slots because casinos may just set the slots closer to the state minimum. I just think a higher minimum payout requirement is generally better legislation to protect the uninformed gambler (which most slot players are, including my parents ).

Even if they're "informed" doesn't playing slots making them uninformed?

Do Hollywood and Harrah's/Ameristar run about the same nightly action? I don't want to go to Hollywood and only have 2 1/3 games going or whatever. Would Hollywood be more action packed on the weekends? What about the best comps/rake? I am moving to KC soon, so hopefully I can blow some money in these games. Also, I would be interested in a smaller HORSE game as well that I saw was mentioned above.

Can't speak with much authority, but I've talked to someone who knows a dealer at one of the Missouri side casinos and Hollywood has really cut into the attendance where he works.

generally there are a substantial number of 1/3 tables run at hollywood Thursday-Sunday during the week 2-3 tables in evenings. I believe the 1/3 games are good and prefer them to the 1/2 as there is much more post flop maneuverability (however I am a regular 2/5 guys so probably prefer it because it is bigger as well) I am not sure how the games compare to harrahs now but i believe the 1/3 at hollywood is a little better than the 1/2 was at harrah's (pre hollywood). And as people have stated in this thread before almost all of the big games have migrated to hollywood so anything 2-5 NL/PLO + should definately jus go to hollywood also they spread some big games on different nights so take a look during the week aswell

I really liked that you could straddle from anywhere on the table at Hollywood is that allowed at harrahs too

Yeah, Harrahs allows straddles from anywhere.

Never been to Hollywood, but let's get some sort of smaller mixed game going. Moving to KC on Sunday and would like to spend some time playing some 4-8 Horse or 8-16 or whatever the limits need to be lol.

Never Posted Here before. Kind of been in and out of playing poker, especially live, for a long time. I will be returning to the Kansas City area in the near future and am wondering if anyone would be able to comment on the state of the 1/2 games at Ameristar. I am under the impression that this is where all the 1/2 action is these days because of the 75% rule (or atleast I believe it was at one point). The prospect of sitting deeper appeals to me and so if anyone knows what the games are like there these days I would appreciate the insight. Mainly would be playing Thurs - Sun. becuase unfortunatley I work for a living. Appreciate it. Looking forward to coming home.

Usually Ameristar and Harrahs have about the same number of games going. At Harrahs you're going to find more loose-passive old guys and at Ameristar there's going to be more action, but a little bit higher quality of play. During the weekend the stacks at Ameristar get super deep. The 75% rule (with no cap) is still in effect. There's times where I've seen known-fish sitting with $2000 at the 1/2 table; that's always great to see.

Older (60s or so) black dude who usually has his wife behind him watching the action. He usually on the plays on the weekends, I think. Someone asked him why he was playing everything preflop once and he went on a rant about how poker is just gambling and so it doesn't really matter.

There's always a 3-6 game going. I've never played in them so I can't tell you which is softer, though.

Am I correct in assuming there aren't any nightly tournaments at Hollywood?

Think they are still working on getting approved for them, if I overheard a phone conversation correctly. Been to HW a few times now and overall, decent amt of games going.

We are shooting for Sept. last I heard. Going to be a deepstack on Sundays to start I think. Then add tournies from there if needed.

Visited Hollywood briefly yesterday while visiting KC. Very sleek looking casino overall. Also nice to see there was an O8 game going. Hopefully I'll get more time in the future to actually play there.

Has anyone played in the $120 deepstack tourney they have at Harrahs on Saturday mornings?? Usually do not play tourneys, but I'v never played a deepstacked tournament and would be interested in playing if they were getting solid turnouts. If ya got info about them i'd appreciate it.

I will be in KC on Sunday Aug 19th-Tues Aug 21, usually a 1/2NL player, sometimes 2/5NL. Should I play at Harrah's or Hollywood? I am staying downtown at the Crown Center.

Haven't been able to play it myself, but I did play the Saturday night pineappple tourney and other players told me the Deepstack has been getting 80 to 90 people consistently.

Harrahs is having a mega deep stack tourney over Labor Day weekend with a $250 buy in, 20,000 in chips, and 40 minute levels. Two day ones (Saturday and Sunday) with a max of 150 players each day and the final day on Labor Day. Play starts at 11am each day.

ANY games bigger than 1/2 1/3 run almost exclusively at Hollywood. Since you're coming in during the slow part of the week, I would certainly start out at Hollywood.
