Re: Horseshoe Casino (Cincinnati, Ohio) -- FAQ added 2013.03.10

Yeah, for out-of-town people, if you are not familiar with this area of Cincinnati definitely avoid going for a stroll too far outside of the casino. It's very close to an area called Over The Rhine that has historically been high in crime (and appearances on The First 48, a reality show about murders and solving them). [Edit: OTR was ranked the #1 most dangerous neighborhood in the US in 2009.] Although parts of that area are improving and there are some nice bars (Japp's) and restaurants (Senate) over there, literally one wrong turn and you are not in a good place. I don't feel terribly unsafe there and I won't let OTR deter me from going to the Horseshoe, but just be aware. Maybe people from Cincinnati in this thread can provide better insight than I can.

Meh...Millenium Hotel to Horseshoe is pretty much the center of downtown, so not sure I would be too worried, but it is always good to be aware of your surroundings no matter where you are.

I'd walk from any of the downtown hotels to the Casino, just not past it.

That would be like manna from heaven. Ever since black Friday, I haven't played HORSE or 10-game. Years ago I got a HOSE game started at Hollywood, but that was a one time thing.

Re: Horseshoe Casino (Cincinnati, Ohio) -- FAQ added 2013.03.10

Got up there and played for about 3 hours today. First impressions is it's a nice building and the poker venue is solid. Didn't wander too far from the poker room but everything looked like a 7 or 8 out of 10 on the Vegas scale. The majority of the dealers were new. Thankfully everybody at my table was understanding of them being slow and making basic mistakes, like dealing to a stack despite the player not being there; not burning a card before dropping the flop; etc. No bad beat jackpot yet. Will probably spend more time here than Hollywood in the future due to the games being better.

Played 1-2 and it seems like the new casino has brought new blood to the Cincy market games. "Soft" would be an understatement, especially considering it was midday on a Monday. There were exactly zero players at my table that concerned me- one kid who thought he could bluff his way out of every pot (proceeded to drop 5 buyins), one guy who played about 10 hands before moving to the 2-5 game and got it in very bad 3 times, 4-5 ABC players, and 5-6 donators. Pretty much the ideal table.

I just had a security guard come tell me to put my hoodie down. Fwiw, I cleared it up with a floor. We are allowed to wear hoodies in theroom but not on the gaming floor. Just a headsup if anyone gets hassled.

Just got home from the shoe, have to say that this room is about 10x softer than Hollywood ever was. Guy called my $370 river bet in a $150 pot with 3rd pair. It's almost like playing on party poker back in the day. Can't wait for tourneys to start up.

I'd prefer it if people put their phone down while they were in a hand (most people do); having said that I'd much rather have people at the table instead off in the corner making a phone call.

Apparently Jaeger was successful in his goal; at the O8 game I was playing in a week ago, Jaeger bought about $1200 in blue chips to play with. When he was done he put them in a shoulder bag, and rolled out. Pronouncing his goal to buy them all and run the place out of blue chips.

Word around town is there are now too few blues in circulation

I can only verify the first 1/2 of this post though its hysterical if true.

They were out of the 2 dollar chips on Sunday when we started up the o8 game and had to send more up for us to start the game.

Yup. They came over to the PLO game I was in and took all the $2 chips out of the rack at our table.

This is probably because the rules stated on the OCCC (Ohio Casino Control Commission) site do not authorize $2 chips.

(1) For one dollar, white;
(2) For two dollars and fifty cents, pink;
(3) For five dollars, red;
(4) For twenty dollars, yellow;
(5) For twenty-five dollars, green;
(6) For one hundred dollars, black;
(7) For five hundred dollars, purple;
(8) For one thousand dollars, fire orange;
(9) For five thousand dollars, grey;
(10) For ten thousand dollars, burgundy; and
(11) For twenty-five thousand dollars, blue.

Notice the $25 k chip is blue. Granted it doesn't say light or dark blue but I believe Horseshoe Cincy was stating their $2 were blue.

Re: Horseshoe Casino (Cincinnati, Ohio) -- FAQ added 2013.03.10

Oops. My only objection to the $2 chips is that they look too much like the 100's. It's kind of funny, they won't let you use purple $500 chips because they look too much like 100's but the $2 chips look closer to the 100's than the purples do. I guess it's a moot point now unless they get the OCCC to change their rules. The guy that took 600 in $2 chips home with him might want to cash them in before they stop honoring them.
