Purdue is, indeed, what would be bringing me up there. Not for math though. My math is pretty basic and mostly limited to EV calcs.

So how are these charity games?

The word is that they run deep and can get crazy loose. Unlike Michigan, they don't have the chip restrictions so even a 1/2 table can get deep. I would expect pretty conservative play in that area, but you never know. The games along the north 465 loop have a good rep since there's a lot of cash in that area, especially the NE corner where Carmel is near by.

If you want to piss them off .. say car-MEL instead of Car-mal (like the candy). GL

Cool, thanks. Initial thought is that we'd end up in this Zionsville area, so that we could split my commute and wife's. We'll see what happens.

Def going to have trouble not saying carMEL, as I used to live near Carmel CA. Reminds me of when we lived in NE and Papillon rhymed with Pavilion, or in KS where Eldorado rhymed with Tornado. Sigh.

Moose Lodge TR. Went under contract for a house yesterday, so I had some time to play.

Moose Lodge is, indeed a small room. It's a completely separate room from the main lodge, with its own entrance. Just four tables in the room, and only two going. One table of 1/3NL and one of 5/5 PLO. There was a cop there for security, and things were run pretty well, if a bit loosy-goosy.

I played 5 hours of 1/3, and there was never a list, though I suspect Sunday night is as slow as it ever gets. The game runner was propping and selling chips from a rack under the chips he was playing when I got there, though he got up once the table got to 7-players. Table ranged from 6 players to 9, often with one or two being PLO folks splashing around while they waited for a PLO seat.

Game was very good, though if you really love money and can stand the swings, play PLO. At least 75% of the PLO players were folks who earn a lot of money through extra-legal means and were extremely gambly with it.

There were two obvious grinders at the 1/3, at least one of whom has likely at least lurked LLSNL, based on his use of terms common there. They were good guys, though they were talking a bit too much strat at first. (If you're reading this, hi and thanks for the advice on which games to check out) Everyone else was one brand or another of awful.

The game played decently deep. BI is from $100 to $300, or 75% of the big stack. Straddles were common, both OTB and UTG. Rake is taken into the dealer's rack as they push the pot, which I don't much care for, as it is hard to track. It seemed to be 10% max $6, but I didn't want to make it obvious that I was paying attention, so not sure.

Payout is in 20s, which makes for a silly large wad of cash for a moderate win, and must be ridiculous for the PLO guys, but it's a nice first world problem to have.

Tables are a bit beat up, but real, not fold outs or toppers. Chairs were a bit cheap, but not rickety and were at least office style. There was a soda fountain and you could bring in your own beer if you wanted.

Overall, it was fine. Not a world-class experience, but not a sketchy one either. I definitely felt safe and unlikely to be cheated. I'd be surprised if the record-keeping is meticulous, but I also didn't feel like I had to watch the dealer like a hawk for over-raking.

Thanks for this. I’ve got the itch again and planned on checking a game out next week. Was planning on heading to KoC but not sure. Care to give out that advice on which games to check out?

Just played at KoC last night. Much bigger room that is not a dedicated poker room (it's the auditorium at the KoC hall). Cleaner than Moose Lodge, but a little sterile. Many more games. When I got there there were 8 tables going, several PLO, one 2/5NL, and the rest 1/3NL. 2/5 broke before I could get seated and all the remaining 2/5 players moved to 1/3. It also had a police officer for security.

Pluses: Nicer location, more tables, more professionally run, massages available.

Minuses: Folding tables and stackable chairs, much less action (at least at my table).

Based on my very small sample size, I'd prefer the action at Moose Lodge, but the atmosphere at KoC.

Can anyone tell me what the etiquette is for taking care of the dealers? There are 'No Tipping" signs everywhere, but I could tell that that's somewhat winked at. I slipped a $20 to the primary dealer at my table at cash out both nights, but I have no solid notion if I was Santa Clause, Scrooge, or in the groove.

You did it right, $20 standard unless you have a particularly good night. Primary dealer will take care of break dealer(s)

Anyone played at the Speedway Legion game on Tuesday? How is the NL action?

Do any of these rooms have regular daytime games? When and where?

A lot of the games start at noon during the week. No idea how many tables actually run then. My understanding is that the 51st and Keystone Moose Lodge game runs basically all weekend, though when I showed up on a Sunday afternoon it was only one short-handed 1/3 table and a full PLO table.

Not sure who runs this, but so far I've found the schedule to be accurate.

Never been there, but I hear that VFW Post 1154 in Lafayette has poker on the third Saturday of the month.

If anyone is looking for a solid Thursday/Saturday game, definitely check out the Murat Shriners game downtown (510 North New Jersey Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204). Usually have at least 2 1-3NL tables going, and sometimes a 1-2 PLO table.

Thanks. Was going to go to the Moose Lodge game last night, but I got lost in studying. Is there parking at the Shriners game? Moose Lodge is in a kinda sketchy area, but free and easily available parking is nice.

Well that's not good. You think they'd follow the law to the letter running a game that big. I love this game and would hate to see it get shut down.

Since I moved here, I've become something of a reg at the KoC Mon Night game. It's pretty much like my TR above, except that I had a particularly nitty table that night. Action can be very good, and the games often play pretty deep.

Tried a rare Tuesday session tonight and y'all get a twofer.

"Broad Ripple" American Legion (is actually at 54th and Keystone, so a ways from Broad Ripple). Went there first and did not play. Only game they had was two tables of 5/5PLO. Looked juicy, but way too rich for me. Poker room is a temporary set up in a side room of the bar. Three tables, IIRC. Same game runners as KoC.

Carmel VFW. Just one table of 1/3NL, but the game was very, very good. Meeting room down from the bar, decorated in standard VFW flags, memorials, etc. Nice tables and very nice chips (Paulsons? at a charity game?). Game runs Tues and Friday. They have a daily HH, and a promo drop to fund it. Apparently the same team runs the Murat Shrine game on Thurs and Saturday. First room I've been to in Indy area without a uniformed police officer present. Maybe that's a municipal requirement?

Sadly misplaced a hundo after the game (think I accidentally way overtipped), so I'm a bit tilted right now.

Nice update .. miss that 'town' ..

Saying 'BR' is the good side equivalent of the bad by saying 'Detroit' to anyone who lives east of Ann Arbor or Novi or south of Pontiac ... they don't like it very much!! BR in general has a very good rep IMO.

Might be hard to fund a security guard when running a one table room with max $4-5K on the table? Rake might be $1500 for the night? Always good to feel safe though ... GL

Tks, mang. Yeah, even the two table rooms I've been at in Indy proper have had uniformed police officers present. I think it might be a city requirement for a license.

I hate it when people use "Broad Ripple" for everything north of 38th and south of 86th. And no, SoBro is not a real thing. But at least that area is more like BR than Keystone-by-the-Head Shops is.

$4-5K on the table? Dude, there was one guy who burned through $5K at the table yesterday. At 1/3. He had 2.5K when I sat down, spewed it all away in an hour. Bought in for another $1K and ran it up to about $1.8K before spewing it all away again within an hour and a half. I'd guess there was between $8-10K on the table at the end of the night.

Like I said, very good game.
