101 Katy has a 5/5 NL on both Wedn. & Friday at 7:00 - Sign up on Poker Atlas to get in the game

Elite has a 5/5 NL game on Monday at 7:00 - Sign up on Poker Atlas to get in the game

Legends has a 5/5 NL game on Saturday at Noon - Sign up on Poker Atlas to get in the game

TCH Houston has a 5/10 NL game ($2K-No cap) - Thursday at 4:00 - Sign up on Poker Atlas to get in the game - Note this one is streamed

That basically covers Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Not really that hard to find if you do a little research.

Thank you very much for the info. I was just in town for a long weekend and assumed it wouldn’t take any research to find higher than 1/3. I did try and get into that 5/5 Legends game but the list didn’t move for hours so I gave up. But really for a non-local rocking up for a few days I would say it’s more difficult to find 2/5+ than basically every large sized city I’ve ever been to that has poker.

That's generally because the smaller games play much larger in Texas

These people who mention rake ... Are these rooms really taking rake? Or are you referencing the hourly they charge?

There are some rooms in TX that have taken actual rake rather than hourly time-fees, which is just asking for trouble from the authorities.

I know of one room in the Austin area that did it from time to time in certain games, and I've heard (but haven't experienced) that there are some in Houston as well that are guilty of this.

Legends now rakes: up to $7 on pots over $25 that see a flop (or that's what it was last time I was there, such things are not terribly stable). No more time charges.

Shocked that the 1/3 games are discussed as nitfests. I've never played a game at Legends I would describe that way, nor one where, over 4+ hours, there weren't multiple $1k+ stacks. I think you just had ran bad in timing of games.

In Houston most are now raking.. It’s a house of cards in my opinion that will come down at some point.

Only ones that I’m aware of that have time charge/no rake are:

Champions
Spades (Webster)(don’t know about the Baytown location)
TCH(both Houston and Spring locations)
Prime Social

All the rest now rake with Legends being the cheapest at $7 a hand. All others are $10 or more.

What will be the consequences for players in a room like legends if police show up?

Pretty much no consequences other than you won’t get paid out for any chips you have on the table or in your pocket. When and if it happens they will just tell all the players to leave.

Wasn't there a raid in the Dallas area and a bunch of the players got fines/summons for court awhile back? The police waited until the final Day 1 of a big guaranteed tournament to show up and confiscate all the money, etc.

Wow. Raking. Had a good idea the time charge games were no longer turning a profit now that the novelty has worn down.

Just asking for trouble IMO.

Here's the raid in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that took place:

Charges & Fines Dismissed for Players in Texas Poker Raid; $205K Still Seized & Staff Await Fate

Last October, the Watauga Social Lounge Poker Club in Watauga, Texas – which is situated between Fort Worth and Dallas – was raided by police during Day 2 of one of their bigger tournaments. Dozens of staff members were arrested, approximately $150K-$200K in equipment, $205,000 in cash was seized, and 49 players were fined $360 each.

Three of those players took a plea deal in December, but since then, the other players have been awaiting their day in court. However, before they got it, they received the good news that their charges and fines were dismissed.

One of the players, Daryl Gresham, shared an image of the official dismissal, which read:

“On this 18th day of April 2023, Daryl J. Gresham is the defendant in the above styled and numbered cause, having been charged with the offense of Gambling – Cards, Dice, Balls, is hereby dismissed for the following reason: “Motion to Dismissed by D.A. – Interest of Justice.”

PokerNews confirmed that other players were receiving similar dismissals. Unfortunately for the three players who accepted the plea deal late last year, their cases stand.

Players Still Upset

While it was good news for Gresham, he also shared his discontent with the situation.

“First part of the injustice has now been dropped for all 46 of 49 who wanted their/our day in court,” Gresham wrote. “Now let’s go get our 205k the TCSO robbed from us at gunpoint, cameras cut, etc… Each and every one of the 19 raiders that day knew why they were there and what was at stake and knew they were doing wrong! Some thought that they were being set up and year you were right by your own dept and DA… This isn’t over til you return our money and justice is served!!!! I’m still disgusted at the authorities that this was ok in your offices!!!! Remember to serve and protect, not to rob the people at gunpoint!”

Steve Nichols also posted an update on Facebook:

“A little bittersweet as I really wanted to take it to trial but it’s vindicating to see the Tarrant County District Attorney’s office cower in the face of folks willing to stand up to them. We’ll count this one as a win for the good guys.”

He continued: “I don’t have any additional information about the criminal cases against the employees … Let’s hope Tarrant County makes the right decision there as well. I know we aren’t getting our money back (which is the most unfortunate part of this whole thing) but hopefully, this pushes the needle forward with lawmakers to make a stand and finally fully legalize poker in the state of Texas so that no other establishments or patrons fall victim to overzealous prosecution.”

A lawyer associated with the case wrote: “I think solidarity won out over here. I think the DA’s office did not like that myself and the other attorneys present that day all walked in and demanded jury trials.”

How It All Went Down

The Watauga Social Lounge Poker Club opened in January 2022 and even hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended Watauga Mayor Arthur L. Miner. The room was even a stop on PokerNews Texas Road Trip back in March.

The original Tarrant County warrant stated that authorities were authorized to seize “currency, gambling proceeds, financial instruments, and other items of value … relating to obtaining, transferring, secreting or spending large sums of money from engaging in specified unlawful activities.”

As well as “Tickets, papers, bank bags, receipts, money, gift certificates, coupons, credit card receipts showing documentation of entries, add-on plays, dealer/staff appreciation, administrative fees, payoffs, and checks cashed by player.”

The warrant, which was signed by Judge George Gallagher, also indicated that authorities were looking for non-poker-related gambling apparatuses such as dice, roulette wheels, video gambling devices, etc. in violation of Texas Penal Code, Chapter 47.

The raid occurred during Day 2 of the venue’s Fall Classic Poker $420 buy-in, $100K GTD Main Event. That tournament featured a “$20 optional dealer add-on”, offered six starting flights, and had planned to live-stream the final table.

The tournament attracted 369 entries, who generated a $132,840 prize pool. Day 2 saw 53 players return to action with Randi Lister (942,000), Ethan Wilson (676,000), and Johnny Marlow (626,000) as the big stacks. The raid apparently took place in Level 16 (3,000/6,000/6,000) with 49 players remaining.

PokerNews will continue to monitor the situation as Watauga Social Lounge Poker Club staff await their fate in the case.

I played in a raked game the other night at a club. It was a decent game, but the carpet smelled and the table was too small. Plus there was only one security dude and he was a little asian guy and he was on his phone the whole time. Didn't bother to wand me either and it was my first time there.

I talked to the dealer outside as I was leaving and he didn't seemed concerned in the slightest about the game being raised. Also told me biggest pot he ever saw was 4 million and I was like wtf.

I have a 10hr layover next Saturday at IAH. What would be my best option during to fill that with playing the pokes during that time? Google maps gives three options not too far from the airport, Legacy, Hangar and Empire, are they all still on, any recs? Thank you very much

I highly encourage you to take the slightly further trek to Texas Card House Spring in Spring, TX (no affiliation other than just a player). IAH is located in north Houston, and TCH Spring is the most popular room in the north area by a long shot. 18 minute drive from IAH, says Apple Maps. TCH Spring has multiple tables running 24/7. Two of the rooms you listed don't run games at all anymore to my knowledge, and Empire in Humble has rebranded to Four Suits Social, but it is a small cardroom that only exists due to the insane rake, and games only run in the evening if at all. TCH is your best bet. Do you mean 11/11, or 11/18? I will be out of town this weekend, but will buy you a beer up at TCH if you mean the following week. Good luck.

Even during the prime years of Dallas police kicking through doors and walls and doing swat style raids on underground card rooms, the players always got either nothing, or a ticket which was later dismissed by the judge. Only players with outstanding warrants or illegal drugs or weapons on them get in real trouble.

And contrary to what you might expect, usually players got their money back.

Didn't the players who took the plea deal instead of fighting the charges lose out though?

I spent a good amount of time on almost all of the private tables in Htown, the well run games are very secure, multiple electronically locked doors, with security on the way in and out as well as a good front (looks like a legit business).

These games rake is usually deemed “unbeatable” by th(e “2p2 types”, but the games play deep, nlhe and plo 1000-2000bb deep is normal at 1/3 and 2/5), and usually solid amenities.

I once asked an retired police officer I worked with why they didn’t really care about the gambling and the machines in the gas stations, he said, there are multimillion/billion dollar trafficking operations throughout the city, gambling is small potatoes, the cops just make sure they get free coffee and donuts from the gas stations.

anyone know anything about clubs that aren't listed on pokeratlas? i drove by a place called "lucky aces" but they don't seem to be listed on poker atlas, what rooms like that are around and how many of them run cheap/free tournaments? are these places less likely to be quasi-legit?
