I think the rooms are both are good at different things. I wouldn't say one is better than the other.
Our first trip to Horseshoe was amazing. We had a great time, won a little money, and were treated very, very well.
SCROLL TO END FOR CLIFFS
I'll structure this similar to a Trip Report only for organization's sake.
ROOM/TABLES: The room was clean, big and reminded me of an old Vegas room (Binions - with obvious influence). It certainly had an older, classic feel, but it wasn't dirty, and seemed well taken care of. The tables weren't my favorite, as the felt made it difficult to slide cards or pick them up. The chairs were somewhat comfortable, but the longer I sat, the more I realized I couldn't remain comfy. The red-cushioned chairs were perfect for anyone preferring to sit backward in it. The least favorite part of the table was the rail. man is that uncomfortable. It definitely needs new cushioning, as it felt like wood wrapped in leather.
DEALERS: The dealers were great. They were very professional and kept the game moving. They didn't let conversation detract from the amount of hands being dealt. that's not to say they didn't chat, because they did, and were most friendly, but their main job was to keep the games moving and they excelled at that.
FLOOR: I didn't have much interraction with the floor except to sign up for a game, but they seemed competent. The only issue we witnessed that left a sour taste was while we were waiting to get on a table, one floor called a name for the 1-2 game. He called it several times (quickly) and moved to the next name. When he told the second name to go to the seat, the guy who apparently was already seated. The dealer said "this is xxxxxx and he's here at the table". The floor said in a rude tone "thanks for letting me know you were here and at the table." There was minor bantor between floor and dealer, and it was done. Except we overheard the floor retelling the story several times (loudly, as we were outside the room waiting and could hear) with anger in his voice. We just didn't feel that the floor acted in the most professional manner. Certainly wasn't a deal breaker, nor did it deter from our trip.
COMPETITION: It wasn't tough. It was easy to spot the good players at the table and after an hour or so I had reads on pretty much everyone I played with. Everyone was friendly, even during losing sessions. Combined, my wife and I never booked a losings session in the two days we played. Players weren't afraid to gamble, and recovering from early setbacks was much more attainable than other rooms I've been in.
COCKTAILS: If there was one thing lacking, this was it. I waited longer here than any room I've played in to a)order and b) receive my drink. I didn't order food, so I can't comment on that. My wife and I also wanted massages on Friday afternoon and no one came in, even after several comments and requests to the floor. We finally got one that night. We both enjoyed our massages.
TOURNAMENTS: I like that they are cheaper than Hollywood, but they don't run as many. My wife was looking forward to playing in a couple, and was disappointed when the only option we had was the midnight bounty (we arrived Thursday at 2pm). We both played the midnight. She busted out middle of the pack, and I was bubble boy. Come out of the first break with blinds at 400/800 and 100 ante, I had 400 chips in my stack...not even enough to cover small blind. I ran that up to chip leader around 80k and made it to final table where my 99 lost to AK when we got it all in PF. I collected 4 bounties, so it wasn't a complete loss. Everyone agreed to pay bubble boy except one guy, so I didn't cash there
In summary, we loved our short trip, and will definitely be back.
