Re: Horseshoe Hammond (Hammond, IN)

contemplating coming to visit a friend in Chicago in May and would want to play if I did, so a few questions:
(1) any good places to stay around the casino, or does it make more sense to commute to/from the city?
(2) last night bravo said there were several 2-5 games (max $500) and 1 5-5 going (max was $1k I think?). I would definitely rather play deeper than just 500, but are the 5-5 games significantly tougher? It's weird to see 2 games of such similar limit being spread in same room.
(3) how tough are the 5-10 games? would it be a good spot to take a shot for a winning 2-5 player?

Re: Horseshoe Hammond (Hammond, IN)

1) You are not staying with friend? How much time with friend v poker? If you read a few posts up you'll see a discussion about driving times. There's also shuttles as well from various parts of the city. There are hotels all along I-94 but make sure you check out the ratings and it's about 30 minutes or so to drive from them (lots of 35 mph zones) with cops and red light cameras.

2) multiple 2/5 tables are 'always' running ... a 5/5 will pop up if they can't get a 5/10 going and they need a few 2/5 Players to fill the table.

3) IMO 'any' 5/5 or 5/10 will be significantly tougher than the 2/5 since the Player pool is a lot smaller. It's been suggested that there's some shared bankrolls as well but that can happen anywhere at the higher stakes. I've played the 5/10 a few times and felt 'comfortable' but it was obvious that there were 2-3 targets and the rest were really good or really nitty (or both). As should be expected, it's a slower game than most 2/5 tables as well.

With such a diverse Player pool you may want to jump a table or two, but as long as you can put up with some bingo I think you'll find the 2/5 games to be good opportunities for profit. GL

Re: Horseshoe Hammond (Hammond, IN)

thanks man - staying with a friend but I might come in a few days ahead of time on my own.

re: (3) that's kind of what I figured/expected. I just wish the 2-5 game was a bit deeper.

Re: Horseshoe Hammond (Hammond, IN)

Sorry, left that part out ... I think you'll find the 'oldest' 2/5 main game to be plenty deep. You just need to build up your stack before you get there. GL

Re: Horseshoe Hammond (Hammond, IN)

Yikes! Did they put in dropping points? I know Poto's losing hand will drop down like every $25-50K that the BBJ goes up until it bottoms out at 2222x. GL

Re: Horseshoe Hammond (Hammond, IN)

How many runners do some of these daily tourneys get? Specifically the evening ones.

Now that I'm settled into my place I figured I'll make a visit or two this week to get a lay of the land.

So they changed the straddle in the 1/2 plo game from 5 to 10 this past weekend, which is something.

I saw this as well and am worried about what effect this could have on the long term health of the game. I think it will also have a negative effect on the action in the game and may cause people to play tighter.

I think the answer to your first concern is that it will absolutely have a negative effect on the game and honestly I too am worried about the ability of the bad regs and recs to survive this game.

As to your second concern, I honestly dont know. Until players start going broke broke I honestly think it will have the opposite effect because nobody adjusts. People will still call the straddle because nobody wants to fold, and the short stacks are still going to buy in for $100 because it's still 1/2, and they're still gonna send it in because that's what they do.

I'm curious whether or not this causes more or less straddling in the average game. Short stacks have a way bigger advantage in doing so.

Re: Horseshoe Hammond (Hammond, IN)

I think the straddle change makes sense since the game is 1/2/5 and not 1/2 ... Although I think it is bad for the game, because now it plays much bigger (they have 5/5 5/10 running to cater those player, no need to make the smaller game bigger).

Anyone heading to the shoe tonight?

Probably will jump into the tourney and fire a bullet or two and then hit cash. Will be in a green Michigan State hat if anyone wants to say hi.

Re: Horseshoe Hammond (Hammond, IN)

Just got home. Placed 10th/93 in the daily. Paid 12 places, 10th was good for $201.

Sat down at a 1/2 table for 2 hours and got up +442.

I'm sure sitting down with $300 and being told max BI is only $200 gave me a good table image.

I've got a meeting at 8:30am so off to bed.
