Good spots in Europe? Good spots in Europe?

08-06-2019 , 12:25 PM
Hey guys,

I was wondering where in Europe can I find a decent live poker scene which has PLO or NLHE games higher than 1/2 daily and consistently. Feels like big cities like London or Madrid where you expect the action to be great aren't that good of an option. Excluding some casino running a series it seems like the live scene in Europe has really died down over the last few years (home games is usually where its at), unless I'm missing something?

Any feedback would be great, thanks.

Just saw the thread.
I play regularly on Madrid. Casino Gran Via on the city center
The pool is medium. Usually have 2 tables of 1/3 and 2 tables of 2/5.
Weeksnds are full with ~1h waiting list.

We also have Torrelodones that have good games, but requires a car to get by.

Any luck finding a good game around here?

Do any of those places you listed have a regular (preferably daily) equivalent of 5/10 NL or higher? Does PLO run at all?

No. Most are smaller games...

London-only the Vic has any big games regularly. 2/5£ (500-2500) is usually a big game and ive seen 10/25 plo occasionally . There is Palm Beach which is in Mayfair that has 10/25£ but not sure how regularly and not sure how it is advertised. Target is rich business whales since near the Ritz, etc

Madrid-casino Gran Villa i did see 10/20€ plo, other than that most were smaller

Rozvadov-Kings Casino most likely only during big events (pokerzive.cz to see on right side...they are in Euros. All others are czech crowns, so don't be mislead.

Prague- only during EPT prague at Hilton in December games are uncapped deepstack various levels

To sum up, for 5/10 or equivalent or higher games in most of Europe won't run them consistently unless big events, this is just from my own observations & opinion.

Now i haven't been, but I guess Macau the smallest games are 6/12 equivalent (50/100 hkd). I heard lists are long maybe a few hours wait but they can call you or something.

Poker sites or places to see what is running where...again this is stuff i use but i play smaller stakes generally so that is what i use. If i find more that you may want i will try and share...hope this helps..

Pokerzive.cz (right side of page has games)

Poker-cash-games-london.herouapp.com (has Aspers, Hippodrome,Empire (they also use Bravo) and The Vic twitter feeds of what is currently running

Dusktilldawncasinonottingham.com/cash-games/live (dusk till dawn in Nottingham UK..only weekends and big WPT events really)

Playground.ca/poker/games (Playground Poker Club in Montreal for what cash games are running...would assume same, big events or weekends only)

CCC.co.at/en/ (concord card casino cash game ticker in Austria)

Thanks mate that helps a lot!

Was really hoping there'd be somewhere in Europe that had some consistent higher action but it seems choices are between home games, USA or Macau.

FWIW, I recall reading a thread about why the Palm Beach has troubles running games any more -- something about groups of pros teaming together and somehow making the game absolutely a s***fest

I went to check out the casino back in 2017 a few times over a given month and each time i only walk in to see a nicely appointed, but empty poker room. YMMV

here's the thread, for those interested in a read:

At first I was considering going to Rozvadov next month for a couple of days, but Prague seems to be a better option - and not as far. The rake is prolly quite high, but if the games are juicy then it'll be worth it. Do you know if they still offer €1/2 NL (or equivalent in Czech korunas) at two hotels in the city? I found some conflicting, possibly outdated info on the stakes here:

2 places to play in city center are Showdown (end of wenceslas square) and Ambassador hotel. They play 10/20 czk , 25/50 czk...free pivo (beer too)

Pokerzive.cz (look right side, shows what cash games are running)

Hilton occasionally has a game.

Ept prague, only Hilton will be juicy. Dec 6-17 EPT Prague runs.

three years ago the casinos in venice advertised poker on their websites but neither were running any, having said that, it's pretty cool to put on a suit or tuxedo and play some baccarat or blackjack in an old palace right off the grand canal

I got back from Prague yesterday and I tried three casinos. At the Showdown I played one session. It was alright, several Russian speakers so the table wasn't too tight.

The Hilton was (and still is) hosting the EPT and they have a separate room for cashgames. It's a hassle to play though, especially if you're new to PokerStars Live events. I needed to get a PS Live card, an Atrium casino card and a wristband, and at different desks too. When I wanted to cash out my chips at the same cashier where I bought them, I was told to go to the casino downstairs, which meant another security check and another queue. It is one big-ass room though - they offer a lot of different stakes, both NLH and PLO.

The Ambassador was my favorite. The amount of poker tables is very limited, but the action on Saturday night was great. Drinks are free (non-alcoholic drinks at least), unlike at the Hilton. The dealers did a great job and I liked the atmosphere.

I've been reading that the games start at 2pm and last until 4am. Are the games good? What do you think?

What do you want to know? I think all of the above was already a pretty good summary. There is no magic place with milk and honey, except maybe some home games but you won't get invited to those via 2+2. The games in Europe are generally suboptimal via a combination of high to super high rake and the games not being that good (compared to the US mainly). Disclaimer I haven't been to Spain and Eastern Europe for ages, but I'd be surprised if you found some magical place there. I think London is pretty much as good as it gets wrt availability and consistency of the games and workable rake. Long story short there are a few places in Europe where you can go to play if you live there or are there on holiday and miss some action but if you want to play for monetary gain you're much better off to invest in a plane ticket and AirBNB in the US or if you want to see something else Canada or Australia, those are still better than Europe IME

Yeah I would not play in Europe. Aside from the high rake, there's almost no freebies in a lot of the casinos. Not even free soft drinks. That's not true everywhere but in a lot of places. In the big European capitals your player base will often be USA/UK/Canada/Aus Players anyways, so what's the point?

I usually don't play a ton of live poker in general and of the live I've played in Europe it's mostly been MTTs, but I've probably played 20-25 cash sessions, all in major cities (In USA I've played thousands of hours of live cash over the past 15 years, for perspective) and I cannot remember a single table, during a series or not, that I've played in Europe which was made up of these players (aside from UK players when I've played in london a few times, which is obvious). Please name one European major city where you think the player base is made up of US/UK/Canada/Aus players? Makes no sense to me and I'm pretty sure that can't possibly be true.

To be clear, cities where I've played cash: Madrid, Barcelona (during EPT and also when not EPT), Prague (only during EPT), Rozvadov (during series and not), Cyprus, London, Dublin, Vienna, Bratislava, Belgrade, Monaco (only during EPT), Amsterdam. Maybe another that I'm forgetting but I can't think of any now. And like I said, it's probably like 25 sessions total so I've played in none of these extensively, most of them it's just 1-2 sessions. Oddly enough, I've spent most of the last decade living in Budapest and I've never once played a hand of live poker in Hungary. I always flew back to the US to play live in the past, so agree with the part of your post about high rake, etc, but this player base often being made up of these countries' players is just plain false imo.

Edit: realised I forgot Zagreb.
