For 1/2, I believe they are still doing the 10% up to $6 plus a dollar for promotion, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Checked it out tonight and it and had a good time. Rake for 1/2 is 10% with $5 max with a $2 drop for the promotion fund (I think). One of the dealers said they are changing the min/max buy-ins for 1/2 to 100/400 instead of 60/300. High hand promotion was running every hour for $550 and people were really excited about it (lol). The 1/2 table I was at was hilariously soft and I walked away up 220 BB after 3.5 hours.

Ginther just reinstated city-wide indoor mask mandates. Assume that means masks will be required at the poker tables by this weekend.

Spent almost a week in nearby Springfield and as such dropped by the room to play a few hours on each day last Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Had a huge run-like-god session on Monday (also was able to accurately read a few opponents and was able to outplay them - a few times I was able to barrel turn bets to get bluffs through I was usually too cowardly to pull and I picked off some river bluffs that I would often fold) and was up $800. Gave a little back the next day but won some more on Thursday for a net win of $869.

Two times I flopped the stone cold nuts in the big blind and felted people. That is the definition of not having to do much to win.

The regs seemed a mix of short stack players looking for a hand and crazy people who straddle whenever they can who love to mix it up with whatever they happen to be holding at the time. Oddly enough neither type seemed to be good at targeting the other group to take advantage of their tendencies. The fact that I did made me one of the better players at the table, which was a nice change of pace from my usual haunts.

The poker room manager dealt to me once for the first time in many years which was interesting. They must have trouble getting dealers which is common elsewhere as well.

Someone tried to tell me about an underground room to play in which sounded tempting until he went into a "they don't make you wear masks" tangent which was a turn-off for me. Masks are a feature not a bug these days.

I don't understand the strange rules concerning buying drinks that you cannot use chips but you can tip with chips. They wouldn't take a credit card either.

When I cashed out on Thursday to have food with a friend who dropped by, they said I didn't have any comps available - I had to go to the poker room to have them added to my card. I had like $7 or so, which was fine, but then the supervisor added a $20 comp as well without me asking which was nice of him!

I spent several years living in Columbus. Considering that plus the fact I have some good friends still there, I don't often make it out often (I was last there around Christmas 2013 and I did play but don't remember much about my short session where I ended up down $38) but I would definitely play there again if I was in the area.

Glad you had fun and profit! It's nice little poker room we have here, IMO. A few thoughts on your experience from a "reg" here.

Pretty accurate. At 1/2, the straddle is extremely common, way too much so for my tastes but hey, it induces action. And also correct that we have our share of OMGs waiting for a hand, which I don't mind, usually makes for an easy fold. There are few of us playing exploitative poker against these types that it makes for a consistently profitable opportunity, and also few enough of us where we recognize each other and are able to move to a different table if you find yourself sitting with 6 other players you know on a first name basis, and know to be good, lol.

Absolutely; the restricted hours are also the result of short staff (not open 24/7), at least at the start. I doubt they'll go back to true 24/7 as it wasn't profitable to keep the room open from, say, 4-7 a.m. with one table full of zombies going. They just got a new class done and the rookie dealers have started, which makes for some interesting 30 minute sessions, but overall they are doing quite well and settling into it.

When they first opened in 2012 you could buy drinks with chips, but they changed to just cash shortly after that. Word is it wasn't a casino preference but rather some kind of state gaming commission rule, but I don't know for sure.

I'm sure it's a combination of Gaming, Liquor Control and Insurance issues combined.

Michigan doesn't care how you pay for a drink, it just can't be 'complementary' or a prize/promotion. GL

Can anyone give me the lowdown that’s been here recently?

How many to a table? Masks mandatory or no? And can I drink at the table?

Eight per table plus dealer, masks mandatory (that's a city of Columbus rule), and yes you can drink at the table but not eat anywhere in the poker room.

Well, apparently over the holidays (and when I was out of the country), Ohio finally passed and DeWine signed the sports gambling bill. We're still months away from seeing a sports book at Hollywood as they still have to work out all the regulations and they've said that will take a while. But I suspect construction can begin soon (if it hasn't already) now that the bill is official and it's only the details to work out. BTW, I found a link to the Ohio Casino Control Commission's presentation on the form of the regulation if anyone is interested in the details:

Any rumors on where it's going in? I remember a while back someone said the buffet area was the plan

It all depends on if they want to make it an 'experience' or just run a book. Some casinos just have a 'Rewards' type counter and kiosks spread around the facility. You can cash in your tickets at the counter or at the cage. Floor space is a premium and will have to be 'fought' for (and will need to produce). GL

I heard the same thing recently. I think the assumption was always that it would be incorporated into OH lounge because of the large space and TVs already set up, so they just needed to add a betting station and maybe some scoreboards. But that talk was before the pandemic and (reportedly) permanent closure of the buffet, so now that's a lot of dead space that enables them to build a more sports-book-specific experience should they so choose. Adding to OH is probably the cheaper option, but IMO the buffet area allows for more possibilities. Shame to lose the buffet, though, it was actually pretty decent especially with the deal for to-go boxes on poker comps.

In Columbus for a few days. Played some $2-$5. What’s the deal with the floor guy in the wheelchair? Dude is angry as F. He’s rolling around just yelling at people all the time. I was certain the dude was gonna have a stroke.

That particular manager is generally quite chill and a good manager. You must have just caught him when a lot was going on or something.

When did you play 2-5? I was there Friday afternoon until about 4:00, just wondered if we sat together.

I saw him get huffy at players as well as staff. Totally uncool. I was there Saturday so looks like we didn’t play together.

Traveling to OH soon. Hope to spend two or three days playing poker there during the week. Enjoyable experience when I previously visited a couple of years ago. Columbus is big population center, which is why comp system is better at this particular Hollywood Casino property vs. other ones.

Of your 4, I think 2 and 4 are possible, 1 and 3 are not (e.g., they just got a new dealer class in and if anything are now overstaffed w/o tourneys). Our guesses usually revolved around something involving the commission since the shutdown was so immediate and hush-hush. Dealers have been left in the dark too.
