Last time I was over there I stayed at La Quinta down the street.

I could settle for it, as long as they don't put me on the 2nd floor near the elevator where you get the echo from the open area to the 1st floor.

Any other recommendations?

I only buy hotel rooms by bidding on Priceline Name Your Own Price, and only if the price is comparable to that of a Motel 6 (Motel 6s in the HGC area include Stanton (7450 Katella E of Knott) and Buena Park (Valley View/Orangethorpe & SR-91) which are about $50 plus $3 for internet.

Priceline hotels I have garnered near HGC include the 3.5* Sheraton Cerritos (near Bloomfield & SR-91), and a number of 3* properties in the Buena Park zone including the Radisson, Courtyard, & Holiday Inn Select, all near Beach & SR-91. Of these the Sheraton is hands down the best value; all can be bid for maybe $45-49. I also recommmend the Radisson which features free breakfast, as well as free booze during happy hour.

You could also try negotiating a rate with any of the motels along Lincoln east of Bloomfield, or on Beach, especially if you will be in the area regularly.

There are a couple of motels on Lincoln within a few blocks of HGC , but I wouldn't stay in 'em.

I live on the next street over from Lincoln, and used to work for the Cypress Papa John's as a driver, bunch of shady motels along Lincoln that I would never stay at.

Anyone played the newly reformatted $100-200 plo game yet? Feedback? As many casual drop in players as before? Still running daily?
I know the bigger buy in is a good thing for the better players, but I wonder if the casual Player (newbie) will be scared away by more money on the table. I think part of the attraction of that game was that any and all players could jump in and give it a try, cuz after all, it's only $100.

Just played it the other day mid-week. Game still starts around 1pm-2pm and regulars are still there buying in for $100. The $200 option definetly helps when you get called in 2 spots all-in for $150 c/r turn, both who have 2 pair against my nut straight w/ redraw to better straight. Of course one of them fills on river. So now you don't have to build back from only $100, and it's actually a good game now, more like real PLO.

Any advice about Hawaiian Gardens for a kid about to turn 21 that loves playing low stakes NL Hold 'em? I've heard the 20 and 40 dollar tables are aipf pretty much every hand, any other knowledge or tips on the place would help a ton!

You'll never beat the rake at 1-1 $20-max or 1-2 $40-max, and any poker skills you acquire may well be useless or worse in "real" NLHE games (like you said lots of people are AIPF). You could wait for big pocket pairs, avoiding unpaired high cards, but then again there is the rake. However if you have several $20 or $40 buy-ins to blow, it's not a bad place to drink, watch a ball game on TV, or eat the good and inexpensive tableside chow. Move up to 2-3 $100-max when able. Or enter a tournament.

Thank you for the info pretty much exactly what I needed to know! Only question I have is a buddy of mine said that at the 2-3 $100 max they only give you $5 dollar chips. Is that true?

Yes it is, they give you 20 5s but give the dealers give you change when you post blinds and tips for the dealer. Also the PLO increase BI sounds juicy enough for me to play FR PLO live...

1-1 $20 max = $1 chips
1-2 $40 max = $2 chips
2-3 $100 max = mostly $5 chips with a few $1 chips for blinds, tips, food and cocktail servers, and odd-size raises (typically $12 or $18). Get good at the $100 game and you'll be ready for any other 2-3 game in LA and any 1-2 game in Vegas.

Tough table to beat or just a good stepping stone?
And last question, I don't drink alcohol but I pound down caffeine, drinks aren't free at the $100 table right?
Thank you again for all the responses

No free drinks (but you can buy Vietnamese iced coffee). Difficulty of game depends on time of day and day of week.

Show up at 2 PM on a Tuesday and you'll be playing against people whose full time job is attempting to grind 2-3. Friday night at 7 PM you'll be more likely to find employed people out to have a little fun.

Time-of-day and day-of-week tricks can be done in any casino or even online. Another thing you could try is to set your alarm clock for 10 PM and show up rested and sober when many other players are drunk and/or tired.

Definitely could try but I don't have the freedom to do that sort of a rotation right now haha. I think it was in Ace On The River where Barry Greenstein was talking about how he would show up late and well rested and not play on days after work and stuff like that. Didn't realize it had that big of an effect.

Played here last Saturday and made a few hundy in the 5/10 before sitting in the PLO game and getting stuck 1500 before making a 3 handed but mostly HU comeback to book a $58 win on the day.

The PLO game had some soft playing and borderline collusion so I'm hesitant to go back. That being said there were probably 4-5 donators(probably regs) that busted 1500/2500 so it was a decent game regardless.

You know, I kinda figured this. A lot of the times I walk by the table it's the same 4 people.

I wanted to ask about 2-7 and lowball. Is there any money to be made here? or a group of the same old cronies day in day out?

Alcohol isn't free anywhere in CA. It's against the law. Soda and coffee is free at HG. A bottle of water will cost you however. In the VIP section everything is free except alcohol.

Not tough. Definitely just a stepping stone for anyone that's competent.

Whats the NLHE like at the HG? I have been playing for about 3 years at the commerce in the 3/5 $200 buy in game and have done pretty well. i think the commerce is the nuts but i live closer to the HG and was wondering if anyone could compare the two? Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

IMO Commerce is softer as they are on a freeway and they attract non hardcore businesspeople etc who drive by and stop on impulse. HG is good for training, like wearing ankle weights. Food is better and more accessible at HG.

Anyone ever play w/this reg named dana? Didnt really care too much for him as he berates every single bad player, but he was pretty spot on with his reads (which he loved announcing to show how smart he is). Wondering if he's a pro? He also plays a lot of chess on his phone

Have a few questions;

I'm a bit confused on the BI structure for NLHE. You have to buy in the exact amount? For 2/3 its $100? 3/5 is $300?

Does PLO8 ever run?

Any comps for 3/5?

Would subletting a place in Cyprus for 3-4 months be advisable? 23, single. Looking for good weather/poker/tennis/girls.
