Having been out of the scene for quite a while I had no clue this game had started. I dropped in to HGC last night to play some 100NL. Lo and behold when I walked up to the board I saw "100 PLO" with a list of players five deep.

I asked if the game was actually running and it was, right up next to the board.

I got my name on the list and sat down at a 100NL table while I waited. 20 minutes later they called me and I got in. Half an hour later (around 6pm) a second table started and ran until I left at 10pm.

Guys, I have to tell you, those of you bitching that this 50bb structure is no good are wrong wrongitty wrong wrong wrong. At least four players had wins greater than $500 in my time there, and two were near $1000. And let's not forget this was a Monday night. I understand it doesn't let you bluff as much, or make big river value bets, but when you can get all in with a wrap/flush draw combo against one player with top set and two players drawing nearly dead with worthless two pair combinations, the value becomes quite clear.


The play was loose passive just like the NL games at HGC nearly always are. (Or at least were when I was a reg there ~4 years ago). There were lots of open raises preflop but I maybe only saw two preflop re-raises the whole time I played.

I was in the game for about 4 hours and in that time there was not one pot that didn't see a flop. NOT. ONE. And I kid you not, 90% of the pots had four or more players to the flop.

Besides the loose passive play, I saw a couple of the players with a decent sense for the game start gambling as the night went on and their patience waned. I am at best an average player, and this game seemed very soft to me. Anyone who could come to this game with some real chops could probably make a lot of money.


The dealers were surprisingly well adjusted to the game. Only one dealer that sat while I was there had any real moments of confusion, though the players did need to correct the dealers on what a pot size bet should be a few times. If you do decide to sit at this game just keep an eye on the pot size and realize that these hiccups will happen.


This is by far the most legitimate attempt to get PLO games running and healthy in LA that I have seen yet, and the game is very juicy and action packed to an extreme degree. If you want to see live PLO games in LA and can make it to HGC a night here and there, you really owe it to yourself to come support this game a bit.

I'm really glad to hear about this. I'm going to have to make the trip down to HG to play in this game.....(maybe next week). Like a lot of folks, my primary game is NLHE, but I used to play a decent amount (and do fairly well) of PLO50-200 online as well. I've never played live PLO (other than house games), so I'm not quite sure what to expect. But, it's nice to have a variety of games to chose from.....as NLHE day in day out can get a little stale.

Has this game been running every night of the week? Or only on certain nights?

No problem. I was stoked to find out about it myself!

According to the other players there the game has run every day for a couple of months now, and has been pretty regular ever since february. Can't verify that personally of course but I will try to be dropping in at least once a week to see, and will give reports when I do get to go.

it typically starts in the early afternoon. one of the people who have posted in this thread (i think the OP) is a host for the game.

it runs every day. wait list for 1 table can be like 3-5 players deep. sometimes 2 tables run. dies around 12-4am. action on the 2nd table is usually better than the 1st table. 1st table usually full of nitty regs vs. casual players on the 2nd. sometimes there's action and sometimes there's not. it always amazes me that 3-6 people limp pf and check down a $4 pot. the nitty regs sit pretty much all day until they get like 5 bi's and get out of dodge. takes forever (30min-1hr) to get in the game when 1 table is running and with a few names on the list.

I was just at HGC the other day. It used to be 1/2 $50 BI or something like that. LOL. They also changed the hot dogs. They used to have National Hebrew now it's gay ass Farmer John's.

I'll be playing at HGC tonight after work, and if the PLO is running that's what I'll be playing. I'll write up a TR tomorrow for anyone interested in the state of the game.

On Friday night I hit "The Gardens" or "Hawaiian Gardens Casino" (I can't figure out what it's called these days) to get into the 100PLO game again.

It took me an hour to get seated in the game this time, thanks in part to a failed attempt to start a second table up when 6 players who had put their names on the list in the last five minutes failed to show up when the game was called.

I was very surprised, and many of the other players were expressing surprise as well, that the second game wasn't going already on a Friday night, considering that it had run (according to what I was told) on four of the three weeknights that week.

Dealers:

In my first post about my experience in this game, I mentioned being pleasantly surprised that the dealers were well adjusted to the game. Well, I must now add the notation that that is true in MOST, but not all cases. I played for about five hours Friday night and two of the dealers that sat were having a pretty rough time coping with pot sized bet calculation. The rest were very good at it. If you decide to go play this game, keep an eye on the pot size when you can, since some of the more irritable players just make these situations worse when they occur by throwing out new guesses at the pot size every few seconds and confusing an already confused dealer.

Players:

The game was mostly populated with passive, straightforward regs for the first hour and a half I was there. Most of the players were seeing the flop 90% of the time or greater.

The game play was predictable after the flop, most of the time a big bet meant the nuts, and a check-call meant a draw.

I noted that one player saw every flop AND every turn that was dealt while he was at the table, and generally folded the turn.

Another player saw nearly every flop he was dealt in for but was playing pretty nitty after the flop, but was nevertheless unable to fold for large pot sized river bets when his face-up hand had clearly been outdrawn.

After a while a more Laggy player, whom I assume is a reg since he was there the first time I sat in this game, showed up. Now when I say laggy. I am more or less referring to pre-flop, as he raised around 75% of the hands he was dealt. After the flop he mostly turned into a check-call machine. He did pretty well though, hitting enough hands and getting paid off enough to leave the game with a few hundred in winnings.


Overall:

The game still looks well worth checking out to me. Although not exactly action packed this time around, there was still a lot of clearly poor play and some very dead money on the table.

The game broke around 11, which again surprised everyone since it was Friday night.

I broke even, after running a successful semi bluff in the second to last hand of the night to regain around $60 I had lost by sitting there and being card dead, and playing way too many flops. Early in the night I had been up $100 or so and could have easily held onto it with more disciplined play.

Edit: I plan on hitting the room again tonight and will write about my experience there tonight as well for any interested.

Hit the Gardens again last night and played a long PLO session from about 7pm to about 4:00 AM.

I got into the game in less than ten minutes this time and the board built up pretty quickly so that a must move table was finally spread. That table lasted around three hours or so. The main table was breaking at 4 AM when I left.

The players ranged all over from total nits to a calling station like you see at 2/4 limit, to a player raising/three betting every hand he was dealt.

Fortunes were changing all over the place in true pot limit omaha form the whole night, with one player having around 2K in front of him at one point and losing that down to around $900 by the time he left. As a result, By the end of the night a lot of tilt was happening at the game, with many players complaining like crazy every time they lost a 55/45 match up, and expressing annoyance when the game got more aggressive and lots of pre flop raises and re raises were happening.

Managed a small ~$100 win despite my play, which was pretty mediocre and at times down right lousy. After not playing live regularly for a long time I find myself struggling a bit with the immense amount of patience it can take to not play badly.

For whatever reason, the game was far more action packed last night, on a Monday night/Tuesday morning, than it was on Friday night. It could be due to the tourney schedules at the gardens on Fridays perhaps, or maybe the action players were in Vegas last Friday. Who knows. At any rate, the game as it was last night was extremely juicy, certainly worth a sit down for anyone with some PLO appetite.

For anyone thinking of dropping in to check it out the game usually begins at 1PM (On weekdays at least. I don't know what happens there on the weekends) and usually goes at least until midnight, and the host, [name removed], says it has circled around to the next day on a few occasions.

My next trip will probably be next Monday, the 8th. I'll keep you all informed on how the game is going.

How many hands per hour are dealt in that game? Next time you're there, would you mind taking a count and reporting back?

I've been meaning to download a tally app on my phone and do this. I'll probably play there a few times before disciple returns since he said he won't be there again until next monday. I'll see if i can remember to keep track and i'll report back this week.

But as a rough estimate in the meantime, what might you say? I'd think we were maxing out near 20 h/hr with the better dealers, with some of the slower ones dropping the pace as low as 16.

I've been going for the past 2 months. Games are good enough for me to give up the $200 NL @ Commerce and play strictly PLO as of late. I usually go on Wednesday and Saturday. GL!

If you guys are ever up in the Ventura area, they've got a $1/3 PLO game on Thurs with a $500 max buyin. It's been struggling lately, and the game has been converting to a PL Big O game when the PLO game gets too short. Call ahead to see which flavor is going before you commit to the drive. The PL Big O (same money structure as PLO, but plays as 5-card Hi/Lo) also goes on Tuesdays and Saturdays, starting at 11:30 am each day. Wait lists are 5-10 players.

As far as the hands/hr I would say that's about right.

For the most part I think the dealers are pretty good at this point. It was alot rougher when the game first started being spread. What's more dissapointing is some of the regs that still slow up the game with pot counting stuff especially when it's pre-flop. 3 limpers are in and they wanna raise pot and they are trying to ask the dealer and count up the pot or they just say pot and shove a stack in there like they have no clue what the pot is. It's obviously way too much then they have to pull the stack back, count up the pot....ugggh! That gets to be a little tilting after awhile. I think at this point no reg should be asking how much they can bet pre especially when it's just 2 or 3 limpers that have come in. It's real easy. 7 + 2 for each limper is how much you can make it pre if you are the first raiser but some people still seem to struggle with this for some reason.

You aren't gonna get a ton of hands in with this game but I still think there is tons of value in this game and people making really big exploitable mistakes left and right that you can cash in on.

From what I've heard the host who has been getting this game running and occasionally propping it doesn't work on the weekends. Can you shed any light on how the game runs on the weekends? Are the players just showing up and getting it started? Do you know what time it usually gets running?


Any details would be nice.

From what I've seen on the weekends is once they get a decent board, they'll open up a game. The 1st weekend that I went, there were only 5 people on the board and we ended up playing 4 handed. The game filled up about an hour later. The last weekend that I tried, which was 2 weeks ago, the game had just broken, mind you this was @ 8am.

I live a good drive away so I usually call ahead of time and ask if the games are running. If there's a full table, I would expect it to run all day and night. The action is good, the players are soft, but they will gamble. Your perspective on the game is very accurate. I lost big the last time I went from being way too aggressive, but that's PLO. If you go enough, you'll notice that 30% of the players are decent regs playing and the other 70% are regs that want to play with 4 cards. Good Luck!

Alright I played 4 hours last night and here was the hands/hr break down

Hour 1 - 30 hands
Hour 2 - 32 hands
Hour 3 - 25 hands
Hour 4 - 25 hands

Avg - 28 hands an hour.

I'll report back a few more times but I think this is a pretty accurate sample. It's up around 30 and when there are a few more big multi way all-ins or a dealer that's a tad slower it drops down a bit.

Wow. It's nice to be way off sometimes. I really didn't think it was this high at all. Good news.

Yeah that's why i finally decided to count it and know for sure. Something like that is easy to kind of take a guess an be off at when you are just trying to "ballpark" it.

I was there last night. The game was running strong still and there was a wait list for most of the night. Only one table ran though.

It's still a very good game. Lots of bad play going on (mine included, though I was a total luckbox last night).

Ahh my old stomping grounds...how's the 3/5 game? Is it still fishy?
