Harrahs Tunica Casino/poker room closing. Harrahs Tunica Casino/poker room closing.

Harrahs Cherokee is even more appealing than Tunica, Biloxi, and West Memphis since Cherokee started spreading live 2-5 nl to complement the Poker Pro machines.

I have gone to Tunica and Biloxi zero times since Cherokee opened. Also, you could not pay me to patronize ANY casino in Memphis or West Memphis. Too many gangs, too ******* dangerous.

Just having to drive through Memphis to get to Tunica was scary enough.
Tunica also lost players from the Atlanta area as they are going to Florida, Texas players are going to Winstar or Choctaw, Oklahoma players staying in Oklahoma, Little Rock players going to Oklahoma casinos. With so many new casinos people don't have to travel to Tunica as there are closer casinos to them. Tunica needs to get down to about 6 casinos for all to be profitable.

One more big plus for Cherokee: We got WSOP Circuit event starting in five days? It was crazy popular last year. Come and get some!

Only drawback to Cherokee is the room prices.

You both win! Congrats.

Also, a recent study in the journal of sociology "Duh" found that poor people who live in dangerous ****holes like to gamble. So West Memphis's casino has a captive audience built in.
Stupidly getting in the middle of an internet slap fight, but West Memphis is an ugly, dangerous ****hole, but Southland is right on one of the busiest freeways in the nation. I go there all the time and never felt in danger, like say Fremont Street in Vegas in the "good old days". You take an exit and park, there's security in the lot all the time. There are no Road Warrior gangs waiting for you at the exit, get back on the freeway and get out of there. Stay and eat in Memphis.

I don't know why bigtex21 is so obsessed with Southland not flying people in, but it's not that kind of place. It's the McDonald's of legal gambling, not Morton's.

The poker room uses machines, which some people hate, but has advantages:

1. No ****ing tipping (I like to tip for good service, but see #2)

2. No dealer error. Yeah, that is an incredible rack on the babe sitting behind Kid Vegas with the sunglasses, hoodie and iphone and ace of spades tattooed on his hand in a $1/$3 game, but try and pay attention to your job. Thanks

3. No tipping (see #2)

4. The structure of play on the machines prevents certain kinds of angle shooting (consistently folding out of turn face up, anyone?) that are all over Harrah's, which the brush won't punish if it's being done by a good reg. So you just have to grit your teeth through it.

5. Comps ain't bad, like $2/hour at $1/$2 game. Harrah's may be more generous, but if you factor in tips and additional travel, probably come out ahead.

6. Games go faster, more hands/hour. If you're good, more money per hour to be made.

All that said, I'm not happy Harrah's is closing, they efficiently ran good tournaments and they are throwing comps at me right now so I'll be making the trek. Just wanted to point out bigtex21's constant crapping on Southland is not the only viewpoint. And I don't work for them, before you ask, bt21.

So with the casino closing I assume that means the two, actually three, hotels will be closing as well? The Veranda, Terrace, and the Harrahs hotel. What a huge waste, and loss of jobs.

Also, can someone post a link to a thread about the Gold Strike poker room closing? Haven't heard that story yet.

I live near Hernando and I won't drive past Tunica casinos to go to Southland. And I have many friends in Texas, Georgia, Alabama and other areas that come to play in Tunica and some fly so getting picked up "free" at the airport/ comped rooms is important to them.

I have never been to Southland, how do pit games work in Arkansas casinos? Take blackjack for example, is it dealt by a human, or is it electronic only?

Electronic/ Shuffle master casino games@ Southland (Greyhound track) & Oaklawn (Horse track) in Hot Springs

^^ So no live dealers then? Somebody told me there were actual human dealers at blackjack! No chips or cards either?

Just spent five days in Tunica, and stopped at Southland on the way back up.

Man, Tunica is dying fast. Only Hollywood and the Horseshoe have poker rooms left, and the recent poker series at the Horseshoe had unbelievably low turnout. So strange to see the old Grand/Harrah's and everything associated with it becoming dilapidated. It was sad to see what the Gold Strike has become also, as along with their poker room closing the attitudes there have noticeably give downhill (they used to have great customer service). I was told by a slot manager that most of their bigger players now played at Southland due to them having much better odds and being closer, and that the employees at the Gold Strike definitely miss the old days and thus take it out on remaining customers.

Southland is definitely huge and doing great business. I stopped through on a weekday morning and couldn't believe how full their parking lot was, but didn't get a chance to play any poker due to needing to get back home.

I'm stunned that out of all the poker rooms in Tunica, Hollywood is one of the last survivors. What a crap hole that place was....

It looks like this room is closed now, so I'm closing this thread. Please feel free to continue discussion about Tunica in the thread in Regional Communities.
