Really wish someone had hit it already.
Makes me wanna go play Saturday and I haven't been there in a month or so.
Someone is gonna likely switch tables or seats and hate themselves for awhile.

The collective sigh when it hits from the other tables is gonna be audible.

I'm not sure what it says that over 100 people show up to this place regularly and yet almost none of them post here.

Is the player pool that casual about the game?

Trip Report

I was in the Chicago area with my family. Since my teenage son was with me I knew my poker time would be limited, and specifically at the late hours when he was sleeping. I hit the Chicago thread here and was told I should just check the Bravo to find a came when the time came.

At around 11:30 PM on Thursday, I checked the Bravo and saw the closest room was the Grand Victoria Casino and they had a handful of $1/2 games so I headed out with my wife and a friend of hers who lived in the area. That worked perfectly since she doesn't play so they were able to talk and drink while I played.

We had to go to the cashier since the Rewards place was closed for the night (we just missed it). The cashier was very helpful. We didn't really get anything as new members that was tangible except I did get a $15 comp since my birthday is next week.

I was able to get into a game immediately though I was lightly scolded for not buying chips downstairs first. Kind of strange that they don't have a cage there, I guess the poker room isn't a priority there. I was able to buy in at the table, a little surprised that the max was only $200.

The game was a little soft which was fine with me. I played a couple of hours, only played a few hands and except for pocket Queens where I lost about $60, won them all.

Most eventful hand: A guy who just sat down from a broken 2/5 game straddled to $5 under the gun. I was in Middle position and saw A9 of diamonds.

Usually I would raise or fold here but I wasn't sure if the straddler was crazy yet so I limped in just to see what happened. Three players wound up being in the pot and I flopped trips.

The straddler led out for 10 bucks, a player to my right who played terribly when he had no chips but was playing much better now that he tripled up called. I didn't see any reason to raise here as I might have kicker problems if someone had an Ace and might blow them off the hand if they didn't so I called.

Turn brought a second Diamond giving me the nut flush draw. The action goes the exact same way, $10 lead and a call and I decide to call.

River gives me quads. Both players check and I throw $40 out and say my bet size pretty loudly. The player to my right actually spoke when he shouldn't have - it wasn't even his turn yet - about how I said it very loudly, screaming that I wanted folds. He shouldn't have said that, and I'll never know if it influenced the straddler, but after tanking for a minute he called me. The other guy folded and I won the pot. He claimed he had a pocket pair.

I racked up right after they made last call around 2:40 or so having played two hours and making exactly $200. I didn't love having to buy drinks and I couldn't even buy them using my debit card which given the small buy-in would have been preferable (I wound up using cash from my pocket to pay for drinks and tips) and I didn't like the $200 max but I was told that was standard in the area.

Thanks NYC. Dropping someone at O'hare Friday and deciding on if I should drive the extra 50 minutes South to Horseshoe or come back to GVC. I so want the Horseshoe just dont know if I want the 3 hour drive back home late at night. Good info.

The loss of the basement cashier is the beginning of the end to the GVC poker room. When the cashier is a long ways away from the poker room, your incentive and desire to cash out a winner diminishes. Often times, a poker player turns a win into a loss for the evening when they can’t access a cashier cage easily. Those that are playing the bigger games (2/5 5/10) are now at risk of being robbed when having to walk up those stairs to the far away cashier.

I'm a semi-regular here, and never have I felt the threat of being robbed. I guess I can't rule out the possibility though.

Now that the cage is gone and tournaments are cancelled, there is only one question left. Will Eldorado Resorts (new owner) allow that poker room to stay in existence? I would say it’s 60/40 - 60% It remains and 40% it vanishes. Regardless, I would assume many of the bigger games will start to disappear.

Why would they close the poker room? They aren't profiting enough from it?

I can't believe the amount of crying over a very minor issue. people act like they're being asked to run a marathon. you have to go upstairs to leave the casino anyway. the place isn't that big, and very safe as far as I can see. there is no far away cashier...maybe a 90 second walk, tops.

been a part timer at GVC maybe 6-10 times a month. I just quit a miserable job and plan to play full time for the short term. GVC is closest option to me (live in Rockford) Ive played a few times the last week or so and the 2/5 1K max seems somewhat soft, 1/2 players are LOL bad but the rake is a killer.. any regs here or dealers that want to grab lunch/talk some poker HMU as I'll be spending plenty of time in Elgin

I have been playing mostly at potawatomi now gvc is only 20 min from my house. Gvc is going down hill. I get a free room once at week and good comps and the 1/3 at potao is a great game.

1. By making the game big stack, they reduced the player pool from ~50 guys to maybe 25.

2. 2/5 with 1K max, is going to reduce the demand for the game.

3. Some guys went broke.

4. Some guys got banned.

5. Bad dealers, bad floors, and poor customer service have also driven players away.

6. I mean they don't even reduce the lol time rake of $10 per half hour, when the game is short handed.
