My contacts are obviously a small sample of the entire country but between my poker dealer acquaintances, family, friends, and neighbors the number is into the double digits off the top of my head. Iím not even sure about the others in my neighborhood who are either working remotely or not working but the driveways that were empty at 11am two years ago nearly all have a car in the driveway now. It falls in line with the massive staffing issues that so many businesses are facing today. Went to Dunkin Donuts tonight for a coffee there was one worker in the building and 7 people in line. Itís a horrible culture in the workplace today with businesses so short staffed. It has nothing to do with collecting unemployment or payments from the government as those ended 6 months ago where I live.
I am not denying that fewer people are working only that you stated as a fact that fear of exposing their kids. Also while there are plenty of entry level jobs if you move up some in wages the scene quickly changes. There are also many indirect subsidies still in place. Making the child care credit refundable for example.

There are many subsidies and there are many reasons why people are not working. I doubt fear of exposing their kids is tops. I suspect for the under 35 crowd there are more nit working because they are not vaxed than those worried about exposing their young kids. Some of these are because they are concerned of catching it themselves and some because they canít get hired because they are not vaxed.

Btw what state cut off federal supplement to UI prior to middle of May? Were vax shots universally available for US adults by then?

To add a +1 to this conversation: I was a full time dealer in NH who opted not to return after reopening was approved because of the risk to my wife and child. I've been out of work since March of 2020 and haven't received any unemployment since about May. For us, the risk wasn't worth it and like many of my friends/acquaintances in the business in not going back even after my kid is vaccinated and instead will be starting a job in tax accounting in January.

My wife and I found out how to make it work on one income and prefer this lifestyle. She wont be going back until all of our kids are in school in a couple years. It wasn't the plan, but it beats the old way for us, and we know others in the same boat.
This is one of several reasons for staffing shortages.

Covid snapped many people out of the capitilism cycle. Wages across many industries aren't high enough for the risk reward. Also if you're an office worker many can work from home.

At my work it is hard to get young people, they quit after a couple weeks. Wages just aren't high enough,

Mon-Fri 10am-8pm? Can just drive a half hr to NH and play till 1am. Sounds like they want poker to fail so they can claim there is no demand and shut it down permanently.

I did state family and kids as fact due to the high percentage of my contacts who didn’t return to the workforce for those reasons and many of them were dealers. There were 25 states who cut off benefits in June and I believe most everyone was eligible for vaccinations by then since I received my shots in May.
