I just finished a session at River Cree. I was planning an all nighter till I seen they close at 3 am. So I ended up booking a win early and started drinking just before 1 am so I could hit up an Alberta liquor store before 2 am and go back to the room and swill.

It was almost all regs but they all sucked. I took over $500 from a 1/2 nl without even trying. I pulled a couple of moves but nothing other than using my table image as a nit to steal some pots here and there.

First time I've ever been to a Casino where literally no one at the table even drank a beer. Game was soft enough, that I might go play during the week because if I can beat all the sober people on a Friday night, I can beat a random weekday game I hope.

Hey there Edmonton,

I'm from the East but I KNOW that Edmonton is NOT Calgary, but still...

You're close enough to Calgary to appreciate that Deerfoot is partnering with Playground Poker Club (where I work) to offer a bunch of satellites and even a Day 1/Day 2 to the 2018 MILLIONS North America Main Event. It's a $5,300 tournament with a crazy $10,000,000 guaranteed prize pool.

Deerfoot is running a pretty great looking satellite with a $340 buy-in and the first X number of players will win a seat + cash depending on their finishing spot. Based on 300 players there will be 9 seats. This will be running from March 29 to April 1.

The Day 1 and Day 2 at Deerfoot will be held on April 17th/18th.

As well there are tons of guaranteed sats on partypoker and a ton more will be held here at Playground right before the event.

All the info you need is here: https://www.playgroundpoker.ca/millions2018

The rake increase is definitely hurting the limit holdem regs at Century, but otherwise it seems the 1/2 NL games are pretty much the same volume.

And I talked to one longtime houseman (not Cree, obv), he said point blank that the games manager was faced with the decision to either go with the rake % and max increase... or shut the poker room completely. (hint: this room got moved/renovated about a year ago. So... yeah.)

Still nice to see most of the 1/2 NL games are essentially playing like a 2/5 game though (in terms of preflop raise sizes, not to mention when it gets straddled or even double-straddled)... Much of the time it's like practicing for the 20-50bb stage of MTTs

So naturally people would rather sit a 5/5 PLO game with these players then 6 pros and 1 fish and 1 nit retiree at a 5/10 NLH.

Whales seem to have taken to PLO mainly because it's a lot easier for them to play their high variance, pressure style game at PLO where in general they have a lot more equity, then similar situations in NLH.

The games vary, a 1/2 YH PLO could see anywhere from 3k on the table to over 20k. 5/5 Argyll more along the lines of 5k - 40k. But the game gets bumped up pretty quickly the deeper it gets.

Good, profitable games but very high variance, over the last year or so i've re-assessed my life EV. As of now, the edge I have at these games is not worth the toll of the variance for me personally. When I get stuck 4k in a night I am effected far too much. I rather stay away from the game, and the swings because they effect me outside poker.

So I don't blame people for not wanting to leave these games. Though I'd love bigger, regular NLH games to become common. I was beating 1/2 PLO @ ~45bb/hr and 5/5 at ~30bb/hr over ~500hrs, to give an idea at what a competent player can expect.

As of this month (May 2018) apparently Cree is running a 10/20 Limit Omaha HiLo game during the afternoon, starting at 1pm on Thursdays. A list develops, I heard about this from a dealer last week, and since today is a day off for me I am gonna give it a shot (it's been like 5 years since Baccarat had a similar game, but that was FULL kill not HALF kill like this one... all I remember are a LOT of quartered pots; nobody would fold ANY low draw -- so SCOOP CITY HERE I COME hopefully )

I saw that on the poker atlas app.

Would be fun to try. I enjoy playing the 1-2 PLO game there when it runs although variance has kicked me in the ass in that game. How many times can I get it in with a set and straight draw and lose.

This is excellent news. I would suspect it will be a good game.
I always enjoyed playing there even though the stacks were smaller.

The limit O8 game is 9-handed, 10-20 half kill at $100 scoop. One table, starts 1pm Thursdays.

And full of decent-postflop regs. You need to get on the interest list in advance or won't get a seat. Just an FYI.

aka would not recommend, not nearly the splashy new-to-O8 players that Baccarat attracted years ago.

Ahh crappy. We need more types of games here.
I played 7stud years ago at yellowhead.

The 1-2 PLO can be juicy at river cree.

Palace (oops I mean Starlight) in West Edmonton Mall = August 15, hiring poker room manager soon and it will be on MAIN floor of casino with after-hours door (aka upper parkade, slight west and north of the old poker ROOM after hours door)

So I was just told by a middle aged construction guy who seemed very confident.

In middle aged construction guys we trust.

Ask them yourselves 465-6333

I just walked by (9pm) and there were 4 tables running. I saw a friend who mentioned they just opened, maybe even today!

Nice room at a quick glance. I couldn't play or stay, was just in the mall and checked it out and was surprised to see already open.

Poker room is open though our grand opening isn't for another 5 weeks or so. We ran 1-2 NLH and 2-2 PLO yesterday, should be similar today. I expect we'll get some limit action soon as well.

Tahnks Mr. Insider Buddha.

I just left -- 0 tables running... but they told me grand opening September 27th so... hopefully word of mouth gets things hopping.

And 3am close for now because they are using casino floor chips, eventually that side entrance will open 24 hours

Room for maybe 12 tables imo so MTTs should be great if they offer good alternative esp. Sunday afternoon MAKE IT $60 WITH ANTES AT LEVEL 4..6 and you will destroy Century (ditto for weeknights ... one can dream)

I have a few questions:

1. Is there any consistent 2/5+ No Limit Hold'em running in the city right now? I don't like PLO.

2. Is 1/2 No Limit Hold'em even worth playing with the 10% up to $7 rake. That's just a huge increase from the old rake structure.

3. I played a decent amount in Edmonton from 2011-2017 but I have not played at all in 2018. I noticed the games got progressively worse after the recession hit in 2015. By mid 2017, the games during non-peak hours were no longer fun to play as they were just too tight. Have they gotten even worse in 2018?

The reason I kept asking about the opening of the Starlight poker room is because I was a regular in the 1/2 NL at the old Palace before I moved back to Europe for work. I just visited Edmonton for the first time in 5+ years and was excited to get a chance to play there again. Given your kind answers to my repeated requests for information, I thought I'd report back with a brief impression of the Starlight poker room.

The poker room is located in the same position as the old poker room in the Palace. I loved how it is still separated from the gaming area, which makes it nice and quiet. I went there from Friday to Sunday in two consecutive weekends. Typically, they seemed to have a 4/8 limit DC and 1 to 3 1/2 NL games going. At times they also had a 3/6 limit game. As far as 1/2 NL was concerned, the first table tended to open in the early afternoon and at least one game remained open until closing time at 3 am. I was told that the poker room will be 24 hours soon, however.

I played about 40 hours of 1/2 NL. The games during the first weekend felt like I had engaged in time travel and were not much different from the games at the old Palace around 2010. Sure, the rake changed, but generally speaking the players were still of an amazingly horrible caliber. The second weekend there was an influx of semi-capable players due the large freeroll at the River Cree and the consequent lack of cash games over there. This made the games considerably tougher than the games during the first weekend. Nonetheless, a decent winrate could be achieved in these games as well. Overall, I think a winrate of $20 to $25 per hour should be sustainable for a capable player. For the 40 hours of play I managed to get in myself, I ran well above EV: +$2150. A very generous "welcome back" from the poker gods at my live poker training ground indeed.

Hey folks

Anyone playing in Edmonton?
I will be traveling through in September on a Tuesday. Do any rooms here have a chance of running a regular PLO game on a Tuesday night?
If no PLO, then what about 2/5+ NLH on a Tuesday?
Next best would be uncapped 1/2, other than that best place to degen casino games lol?
Thanks in advance!

Yellowhead is likely your best bet for PLO, they almost always have at least a 2/5 DC (which is basically 100% Omaha) game going. Pure Casino on Argyll Road also has a consistent 2/5 DC game, but I'd say Yellowhead plays bigger for sure. Especially if you come in September when the DSPT event is likely taking place.

With table games reopening in Edmonton, hopefully poker won't be far behind.

Yellowhead's website makes it look like they are holding tournaments and cash games are on the horizon. Is this so?

Nowhere else has any poker yet, and Century's website makes no mention of poker at all. Are they cutting out poker? Say it isn't so.
