I have a few suspicions about why the action has been drying up.

First is the economy. Broke and out of work people might take a shot or two at trying to score big in a casino, but for the most part they're short on disposable income and can't feed the games. It's sucked for so long around here that the flow of money into the poker economy has shrunk. (This is also happening in other places, Vegas casino revenues are down a LOT year over year recently.)

Second is the growth of the PLO games around town. PLO plays much bigger than people might think, $1/2 is more like a $2/5 NLHE, $2/5 is more comparable to $5/10 or higher NLHE. Yea it's also a lot swingier, but a truly good player can have a HUGE advantage over a gambler (freerolling a better wrap+FD, etc). So a big PLO game can suck a lot of money out of the higher limit degens *very* quickly. I'm sure they can't all just immediately reload.

Third is the strength and size of the local poker scene. We've had local casinos and games for a lot longer than many other places in the country (short of AC and LV obviously), so there's a pretty large base of reasonably good players around. Not many are really all that great, and a lot are action killing nits, but many are good enough to squeeze out either a small profit or a very slow loss. All of which makes it harder to find really actiony games.

Fourth is the prevalence of charity rooms. Having them all over the place is really convenient in that most of us are 5 mins from a room, but this fragments the games. People are lazy and they tend to play in the closest spot. A lot of casual gamblers are far more likely to stop at the local pub on the way home from work, play some poker, drink some beer and go home than they are to drive downtown (especially during the week). Having cheap tournaments also spreads out where the money gets spent. Instead of a guy going to GT on Friday and playing $300 for a few hours, he can just go Mon-Thurs to his local room and play $40-$50 in tournaments each night.

Fifth/Sixth, the 'destination factor' and Ohio competition. As nice as some of the downtown facilities are, Detroit is not a destination city for tourism. Around here people know that there are nice and safe places in the city, but outside of the state the entire city is viewed as a smoking crater filled with crime and abandoned buildings. So there isn't a large influx of tourist dollars to feed the games (other than what comes in for conventions and sports), if you're going to fly somewhere to go gambling it's not going to be Detroit. Added on top of that is the competition from the casino in Toledo (which is VERY nice BTW). I'm fairly sure that it's drawing a lot of the 'drive in' crowd from Ohio that used to make the 2-4 hour drive up to Detroit to go to the casino for a weekend since it was still easier than going to Vegas.

Unfortunately there's not an awful lot that we can do to fix these things.

Well got there right at 7, couple regs there and cpl newbies, got off to bad start, got good raising starting hands then completly wiff or get counterfeited, get nut flush draw with nut low draw, blank blank, was in game for 700 from that type of stuff all night, then got it back with a couple scoop hands, ended up plus 150, played with nutter, there was prob 5/6k on table, fortunately i think they are running plo/plo8 sat eve, the real bad beat was game broke at 1, not enough time for 8mile

Sounds like you need to maintain your alcohol level, order some tequila at the table.

Pretty hilarious though I actually talked to someone tonight and got a similar response. I am also getting the impression that they just don't care. IMO, this is pretty stupid as poker players bring a good amount of money into the casino that would never be there in the first place. Treating them as these casinos do is not smart from a business standpoint I don't care what anyone else says. They just are too stubborn to see it. Read "The Professor, Banker, and the Suicide King." This is pretty much the point Bobby Baldwin made to finally convince Steve Wynn that having a great poker at the Bellagio was a competitive advantage even though it was not directly a gold mine. Indirectly it leads to increased profits in other places as I am sure you can imagine. The problem is that so many people are unwilling to look between the lines. They just look the other way. As a poker player, this kind of makes me sick. JMO
What about trying to get a small tour that utilizes local poker rooms to set something up. Perhaps get 5 rooms with each setting up 5 or 6 one day events with a ranking system of sorts.
