It's standard rake for Detroit and definitely outrageous. Apparently the casino tax in Detroit is something awful.
CA is pretty bad too, but I don't remember it being as bad as here. It's been 3 years since I've been to CA but from what I remember even if the SB and BB chop they take $1 from the SB.

Was at Snookers last night, looks like they introduced tipping at the table. They have a cup setup on the table for players to put tips into and I guess from what I can tell players cash them out to give to the dealer. Not sure if the dealers are allowed to touch the tip money at all.

So players put chips in the cup and one of them cashes it out later to give to the dealer? Anyone bring quarters to the table?

That seems to be the case, which i don't entirely understand. How do you trust dealers to take rake and drop it in the rack but not handle their own tips? I guess the explanation somebody gave was that there are no cameras like in a casino.

I tip.

However, one of the differentiating factors of the Charity Game (for me) was not "having" to tip.

Doubt this will greatly affect my decisions on where to play, but it is one less factor in the Plus Column for the "Charity" rooms.

Yah that was thing that boggled my mind a bit. Its ok to trust them to take rake, but its not ok for them to cash in chips. I suppose its the fear of dealers shorting the rake for tooaskewrob . I know dealers don't share their tips, the guy who was breaking our table was keeping track of tips he earned.

Small sample, but i found people at Snookers to be more aggressive about encouraging you to toss a buck in the cup than i've ever seen about tipping in a casino game. Could just be because it was the third day of the new law.

In other news, the 15/30 RxR is still a moderately good (HE) to very loose pre/somewhat passive post (LOH) game. The Tuesday full-kill version has broken around 22:00 - 23:00 the couple of times i've played in it.

Lol I have yet to see someone bring quarters to the table, but I wouldn't be shocked to see it happen. The guy who I will call "tip cup captain" was pretty agressive about tipping. Shaking the cup around after someone won a pot, some players were tossing out 5 dollar chips after winning 40 dollar pots. I have no problem pitching a buck, some of them can deal faster and better then some people downtown. But I hate the idea of someone banging the cup around pressuring players

I had a similar experience. I will be very annoyed if it becomes semi-standard for someone to bang the tip cup when I take a HU flop down with a c-bet.

Oh man, I'd have a SERIOUS problem with that. I'd probably smack the cup out of his effing hand and send it across the room.

I kind of agree with being annoyed about getting the screws put to me, feeling pressure to tip. That is completely unnecessary, but hey, we do live in an age of entitlement, right? However, why would someone find it necessary to tip a casino dealer but not a charity dealer? Especially considering some of these guys are better than the bitter, head in the clouds, clueless dealers some of the casinos have to offer?

I don't disagree. It was just a factor in favor of the "Charity" Rooms that there was no tipping. I'll certainly Tip when I play there, but it is no longer one of the differentiators.

Sorta random: I happened to mention charity poker rooms in casual conversation with my boss. He operates a non-profit (apparently they had tried organizing their own poker night) and would like to know more about how to get on board with a charity room. I did the obviously cursory Google search and didn't find anything directly useful. Any ideas?

Just have him call the room. They'll tell him how to file the appropriate paperwork.

Detroit Mix game is still on for Saturday at 2 pm at Greektown. We are down one player, so there's a slot open for anyone interested.

Anyone think there would be a casino like motorcity interested in running a 1/2 NL/PLO round by round some time to mix things up?
not thinking all the time but set up a day to go play it

I'd be all over that. I'd be all over 10/20 LHE. I'm a jack of all trades, so i'd love anything that isn't just straight NLHE from now until the end of eternity.

I do wonder if there's some way we could unite forces though. ITT i've heard the following desires:
  • Mixed game (going this Saturday)
  • PLO8 (seems to be going OK at Snookers, though)
  • Non-NLHE tourneys, possibly as part of a series
  • NLHE/PLOH RxR
  • Mid-stakes straight LHE (some of the 15/30 RxR regs were talking about getting this going)

If we can build a reputation for getting non-NLHE games going, that would have to help us not re-invent the wheel of negotiating with room management for each slot. Right?

(I'm thinking something like a weekly block that possibly rotates among the various options above, except the tourneys. Then as games from that go more than once/month, they can spin off to other times. Let 100 flowers bloom!)

I've been telling them for years to start a 1/2PLO game to help get people's feet wet. The 5/10 PLO/NL game was wonderful while it lasted, but not many casual players will give it a shot and it died out. I told them they need to start small to get people interested.

Talk to Brian. He's the new manager there and he is a real good guy. He's smart and he will listen to you. Just like anything, the more they hear about it the more likely they are to do something ESPECIALLY now that it's so crazy slow there.

If you want something else this is the perfect time to strike at Motor City. They easily have 3 tables open every night these days and aren't always full on the weekends either. If there was ever a time they would consider something else it's now. I know for a fact that they have wanted to bring back limit poker so approach them. Call the poker room in the evening and ask to speak to Brian, but an in person visit is the best

MC used to have a 15/30 hold 'em only game on Fridays...or maybe it was 10/20. It went well for several months before dying down.
